What is the Heartburn? Potentially dangerous confusion can arise when someone neglects their heart pain believing it to be heartburn. What Causes Heartburn? Acid is present in the stomach to digest food. Heartburn occurs when small amounts of this acid rise up into the gullet (oesophagus) - the tube which carries food from the mouth to the stomach. This is called reflux. The gullet, unlike the stomach, does not have a protective lining. So when it is exposed to the acid, it can become inflamed and painful. Why Doesn't Everyone get Heartburn? Some known factors that can lead to heartburn include:
pregnancy
smoking
eating large meals, especially near bedtime
being overweight
bending a lot
wearing tight clothing around the waist. In most of these cases, it is the increased pressure which overcomes the normal muscle contraction and causes heartburn. Smoking, on the other hand, relaxes the muscle around the gullet, with the same result. What is Hiatus Hernia?

Hints on Dealing With the Discomfort AAFP catalog What is heartburn? Despite its name, heartburn doesn't affect the heart. Heartburn is a burning feeling in the lower chest, along with a sour or bitter taste in the throat and mouth. It usually occurs after eating a big meal or while lying down. The feeling can last for a few minutes or a couple of hours. What causes heartburn? When you eat, food passes from your mouth down a 10-inch tube, called the esophagus. To enter the stomach, the food must pass through an opening between the esophagus and stomach. This opening acts like a gate to allow food to pass into the stomach. The opening to the stomach closes as soon as food passes through. If the opening doesn't close, acid in the stomach goes through the opening and up the esophagus. This is called reflux. The stomach acid can irritate the esophagus. It's the cause of heartburn. What is hiatal hernia? Hiatal hernia is a condition in which part of the stomach is pushed up through the diaphragm (the muscle wall between the stomach and chest) and into the chest. Sometimes this causes heartburn. What factors add to heartburn?

New warning for heartburn drug Propulsid
June 30, 1998
Web posted at: 11:15 a.m. EDT (1515 GMT) WASHINGTON (CNN) The Food and Drug Administration is urging doctors to try everything else before prescribing Propulsid, a heartburn drug taken by President Clinton, out of concern the drug may cause serious heart problems. The FDA ordered strengthened warnings for Propulsid Monday after reports of heart rhythm abnormalities, including 38 deaths, since the pill hit the market in 1993. The FDA said it cannot prove the drug caused any deaths but noted that Propulsid already was known to cause irregular heartbeat rhythm, known as heart arrhythmia, when taken together with certain other medicines. Monday's action strengthens those warnings, adding newly discovered drug interactions and a list of other illnesses that increase the risk. The drug's manufacturer, Titusville, New Jersey-based Janssen Pharmaceutica

Aptly named, heartburn is the name given to the burning sensation of indigestion in the stomach and/or chest. It often occurs when hydochloric acid, which is used to digest food in the stomach, backs up. This causes the esophagus to become irritated. Under normal circumstances, the esophageal sphincter closes to prevent the acid from entering the sensitive tissues of the esophagus, but when the sphincter is not functioning properly, acid gets through, into the area. This is called gastroespophageal reflux. People with hiatal hernia often suffer from heartburn, as do those excessively consuming fatty or fried foods, coffee, alcohol, citrus fruits, chocolate and/or tomato based foods. 18. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (Hiatal Hernia And Heartburn)
Studies show that cigarette smoking relaxes the LES. Obesity and pregnancy canalso cause GERD. What Does heartburn Feel Like? How Common Is heartburn?
http://www.niddk.nih.gov/health/digest/pubs/heartbrn/heartbrn.htm

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a digestive disorder that affects the lower esophageal sphincter (LES)the muscle connecting the esophagus with the stomach. Many people, including pregnant women, suffer from heartburn or acid indigestion caused by GERD. Doctors believe that some people suffer from GERD due to a condition called hiatal hernia. In most cases, heartburn can be relieved through diet and lifestyle changes; however, some people may require medication or surgery. This fact sheet provides information on GERD-its causes, symptoms, treatment, and long-term complications.
What Is Gastro-
esophageal Reflux?
Gastroesophageal refers to the stomach and esophagus. Reflux means to flow back or return. Therefore, gastroesophageal reflux is the return of the stomach's contents back up into the esophagus.
Figure 1 In normal digestion, the LES opens to allow food to pass into the stomach and closes to prevent food and acidic stomach juices from flowing back into the esophagus. Gastroesophageal reflux occurs when the LES is weak or relaxes inappropriately allowing the stomach's contents to flow up into the esophagus. Figure 1 shows the location of the LES between the esophagus and the stomach.

19. Heartburn, Hiatal Hernia, And Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)
When refluxed stomach acid touches the lining of the esophagus, it causesa burning sensation in the chest or throat called heartburn.
http://www.niddk.nih.gov/health/digest/pubs/gerd/gerd.htm

Gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, occurs when the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) does not close properly, and stomach contents splash back, or reflux, into the esophagus. The LES is a ring of muscle at the bottom of the esophagus that acts like a camera shutter between the esophagus and stomach. The esophagus carries food from the mouth to the stomach. When refluxed stomach acid touches the lining of the esophagus, it causes a burning sensation in the chest or throat called heartburn. The fluid may even be tasted in the back of the mouth, and this is called acid indigestion. Occasional heartburn is common but does not necessarily mean one has GERD. Heartburn that occurs more than twice a week may be considered GERD, which can eventually lead to more serious health problems. Anyone, including infants, children, and pregnant women, can have GERD.
What Are the Symptoms of GERD?
The main symptoms are persistent heartburn and acid regurgitation. Some people have GERD without heartburn. Instead, they experience pain in the chest, hoarseness in the morning, or trouble swallowing. You may feel like you have food stuck in your throat or like you are choking or your throat is tight. GERD can also cause a dry cough and bad breath.
