Home webGERD.com is a site dedicated to providing practical, useful, and up to date information for patients suffering from gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and its related conditions. GERD may be defined as chronic symptoms or mucosal damage produced by the abnormal reflux of gastric contents into the esophagus. Cohort studies demonstrate that symptoms of GERD occur monthly in almost 50% of US adults and weekly in almost 20%.
Signs and symptoms of GERD are among the most common complaints encountered by the generalist physician. They include: Acid Reflux, Heartburn, Hiatus Hernia, Indigestion, Barrett's Esophagus, Sleep apnea, Chronic Cough, Asthma, Laryngitis, Chronic Sore Throat, Hoarseness, Aspiration, Regurgitation, Chest Pain of non-cardiac origin, Difficulty Swallowing, Blood loss anemia, and Esophageal Cancer.
Patients looking for medical information about GERD can find out about signs and symptoms, self help (dietary advice, life style modifications, over-the-counter medications), treatment options, endoscopic and surgical treatments, GERD during pregnancy, GERD in elderly, GERD in infants and children, etc. by clicking on the "Patients" button. With this condition, a small portion of the stomach gets caught in the sphincter that separates the esophagus from the stomach. A hiatal hernia usually does not require any specific therapy, but any accompanying gastroesophageal reflux (regurgitation of acid into the esophagus) should be treated. This same condition can occur if there is a defective sphincter between the esophagus and the stomach. Low stomach acidity: According to Jonathan Wright, M.D., and some other doctors of nutritional medicine, another cause of heartburn can be too little stomach acid. This may seem to be a paradox, but based on the clinical experience of doctors such as Dr. Wright, supplementing with betaine HCl (a compound that contains hydrochloric acid) often relieves the symptoms of heartburn and improves digestion in individuals who have hypochlorhydria (low stomach acid). The amount of betaine HCl used varies with the size of the meal and with the amount of protein ingested. Typical amounts recommended by doctors range from 600 to 2,400 mg per meal. Use of betaine HCl should be monitored by a healthcare practitioner.

What is heartburn?
Heartburn occurs when the acid contents of the stomach pass 'backwards' up into the gullet (food pipe, oesophagus). This is also known as stomach acid reflux. Most people have stomach acid reflux at some point in their lives, either as heartburn or acid regurgitation.
What causes heartburn?
Heartburn typically occurs after eating a large meal or having drunk a lot of alcohol. Some people get heartburn when they bend over or lie down. The frequency of stomach acid reflux varies from one person to another. For most people it happens very rarely. But weekly or daily incidents of heartburn or acid regurgitation may occur.

- Heartburn (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease-GERD) is a sensation of warmth or burning located in the chest or high in the epigastrium with radiation into the neck and occasionally to the arms.
- Occasional heartburn is common in normal persons, but frequent and severe heartburn is generally a manifestation of esophageal dysfunction. Causes of HEARTBURN
- Heartburn (GERD) is caused by the reflux of the gastric acid and intestinal contents back up the esophagus causing burning sensations, esophageal mucosal damage and in some cases, mucosal erosion (erosive esophagitis).
- Many factors may promote heartburn by reducing lower esophageal sphincter (LES) tone, delaying gastric emptying, increasing acid secretion, or impairing the gastroesophageal pressure gradient. Factors that may reduce lower esophageal tone possibly causing heartburn:
- Certain beverages and foods such as alcohol, chocolate, caffeine, fatty or greasy foods, spearmint, peppermint.

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) / Heartburn What is GERD?

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a digestive disorder that is caused by gastric acid flowing from the stomach into the esophagus. Gastroesophageal refers to the stomach and esophagus, and reflux means to flow back or return. Gastroesophageal reflux (GER) is the return of acidic stomach juices, or food and fluids, back up into the esophagus. Heartburn may mimic other, more serious conditions:
Heartburn pain can be mistaken for the pain associated with heart disease or a heart attack. Seek immediate medical care if:
  • You suffer sudden, severe chest pain, or
  • Pain is accompanied by sweating, light-headedness, and nausea.
Severe heartburn may be due to a serious medical condition, such as a ruptured abdominal organ or heart attack. See a physician when ...
  • Heartburn persists, and
  • An over-the-counter antacid or acid-reducer does not relieve the burning feeling within a short amount of time (from a few seconds to five minutes).
What are the symptoms of GERD?

Often the symptoms may be mistaken for a heart attack but usually this condition is not nearly as dangerous. It is an irritation of the oesophagus that is caused by stomach acid. Usually sphincter at the end of the oesophagus relaxes to let food into the stomach, then contracts to close off the oesophagus from the stomach contents. If the muscle becomes weak, acid and bile from the stomach can go back into the oesophagus causing this condition. Occasional heartburn isn't dangerous, but chronic heartburn can indicate serious problems. Causes A sphincter that doesn't tighten as it should is the basic cause of heartburn. The causes can be: too much food in the stomach (overeating) or too much pressure on the stomach (frequently from obesity or pregnancy).

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
Heartburn, known medically as reflux esophagitis (e-sof-uh-JIE-tis), occurs when stomach acid flows back into the esophagus (e-SOF-uh-gus), the tube connecting the mouth to the stomach. With time, the stomach acid can irritate your esophagus and cause problems, such as ulcers.
Causes
In most patients, no specific cause is discovered. A hiatal hernia is one possible cause. Others are taking certain medicines, coughing too hard, or a stomach that empties too slowly. Esophagitis may also occur when you are pregnant.
Signs/Symptoms
You may feel burning in your chest, especially at night. Other signs of esophagitis may be burping, trouble swallowing, a sour or acid taste in your mouth, or a sore throat.
