You may be surprised at the WIDE variation in the techniques in use and the different levels of skill and experience around the world and the equally wide variations in the outcomes of surgery. The more you know about hernia, the more likely it is that you will enjoy a safer, better and more reliable repair. There is a great deal of information on this site covering all kinds of hernias, not all of which will interest YOU. However, if you only by-pass the pages on other kinds of hernia, and read the "MAIN" pages carefully, this will inform you about your hernia and how it can be repaired today, if you seek it. This site, the first of its kind on the World Wide Web, gives the most comprehensive information on the subject, provided by the leading specialist unit in the world dealing with tension-free hernia repair surgery. This web site will provide all the answers for your research and, if you have further questions, there is a facility for you to e-mail for further particulars.

Provides information about the occurrence and treatment of hernias.
Welcome to the Hernia Resource Center According to the National Center for Health Statistics, approximately 5 million Americans have hernias. Each year approximately 750,000 seek treatment, yet physician experts believe hundreds of thousands choose to suffer in silence, primarily because they fear painful surgery. If you suspect you, or someone you know has a hernia, but are avoiding treatment because you are worried about the discomfort and recuperation time of surgery, talk with your doctor. There are more Surgical Treatment Options available for hernia repair today than ever before. Hernia repair procedures, such as the Bard PerFix Plug repair and Bard Kugel patch repair, can typically be performed
  • in an outpatient setting using local or epidural anesthesia instead of general anesthesia through one small incision within 30 minutes
Patients typically leave the hospital or surgical center within 1-2 hours after surgery, and in almost all cases, return to normal activities within a few days on average. A hernia can be painful and potentially life threatening. Therefore, it is important to see your doctor if you have signs of a hernia. A list of doctors in your area, who treat hernias using the

5. Inguinal Hernia
Read about the differences in the hernia surgeries called herniorrhaphy, hernioplasty, and bowel resection. Includes symptoms and causes. A hernia is a condition in which part of the intestine bulges through a weak area in muscles in the abdomen.
A hernia is a condition in which part of the intestine bulges through a weak area in muscles in the abdomen. An inguinal hernia occurs in the groin (the area between the abdomen and thigh). It is called "inguinal" because the intestines push through a weak spot in the inguinal canal, which is a triangle-shaped opening between layers of abdominal muscle near the groin. Obesity, pregnancy, heavy lifting, and straining to pass stool can cause the intestine to push against the inguinal canal. Symptoms of inguinal hernia may include a lump in the groin near the thigh; pain in the groin; and, in severe cases, partial or complete blockage of the intestine. The doctor diagnoses hernia by doing a physical exam and by taking x rays and blood tests to check for blockage in the intestine. The main treatment for inguinal hernia is surgery to repair the opening in the muscle wall. This surgery is called herniorrhaphy. Sometimes the weak area is reinforced with steel mesh or wire. This operation is called hernioplasty.

6. Midwest Hernia Institute
Offers information about the doctors, hernias, FAQs and contact details. Located in Naperville, Illinois.
The board certified surgeons at the Midwest Hernia Institute specialize in the use of the Kugel patch and the Composix Kugel patch for hernia repairs. In addition to serving the local population in Northeastern Illinois, the Midwest Hernia Institute attracts patients from around the country with complex hernia problems or patients who desire a hernia repair with a Kugel patch performed by a more experienced surgeon.
Our Mission
The physicians and staff of the Midwest Hernia Institute are committed to providing the best hernia treatment available by combining the best technologies with extensive experience and to advance the field of hernia surgery through research and training of qualified surgeons from around the world.
Company Profile
The Midwest Hernia Institute was founded by board certified general surgeons Dr. Jeff Braxton and Dr. Greg Spitz in 1999. Dr. Braxton trained with Dr. Kugel in Olympia, WA and was the first surgeon to bring the technique to the Midwest in 1996. After rapidly gaining experience, the doctors were asked to become instructors by Surgical Sense, Inc., the company manufacturing the Kugel patch. After Surgical Sense was purchased by Davol, a division of Bard (NYSE: BCR), Dr. Braxton and Dr. Spitz were asked to become a major training site for the Kugel patch and a test site for new hernia technologies. The doctors provide on-site training for surgeons from around the world on a bi-weekly basis and travel internationally to provide hernia training.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a digestive disorder that affects the lower esophageal sphincter (LES)the muscle connecting the esophagus with the stomach. Many people, including pregnant women, suffer from heartburn or acid indigestion caused by GERD. Doctors believe that some people suffer from GERD due to a condition called hiatal hernia. In most cases, heartburn can be relieved through diet and lifestyle changes; however, some people may require medication or surgery. This fact sheet provides information on GERD-its causes, symptoms, treatment, and long-term complications.
    What Is Gastro-
    esophageal Reflux?
Gastroesophageal refers to the stomach and esophagus. Reflux means to flow back or return. Therefore, gastroesophageal reflux is the return of the stomach's contents back up into the esophagus.
Figure 1 In normal digestion, the LES opens to allow food to pass into the stomach and closes to prevent food and acidic stomach juices from flowing back into the esophagus. Gastroesophageal reflux occurs when the LES is weak or relaxes inappropriately allowing the stomach's contents to flow up into the esophagus. Figure 1 shows the location of the LES between the esophagus and the stomach.

Karakteristieke pijnuitstraling in het been. De meeste hernia's komen voor op de onderste drie niveaus In deze figuur zijn de wervelbogen niet afgebeeld. De hernia drukt aan de linkerkant op de uittredende zenuwwortel L5.
