Herpes Infections
Opuntia streptacantha, an herbal product in use for many years, has been shown to have potent antiviral properties against herpes simplex virus. One of the world's great researchers in this field has been using Opuntia for many years, for over a decade in England, to help control herpes infections in patients. Dr. H. has located an inexpensive source of Opuntia that can be taken as a dietary supplement in capsule form. Contact "Opuntia.US"

28. Genital Herpes, NIAID Fact Sheet
Genital herpes. What is genital herpes? Genital herpes is an infection causedby the herpes simplex virus or HSV. How does someone get genital herpes?
http://www.niaid.nih.gov/factsheets/stdherp.htm
March 2002
Genital Herpes
What is genital herpes?
Genital herpes is an infection caused by the herpes simplex virus or HSV. There are two types of HSV, and both can cause genital herpes. HSV type 1 most commonly infects the lips causing sores known as fever blisters or cold sores, but it also can infect the genital area and produce sores there. HSV type 2 is the usual cause of genital herpes, but it also can infect the mouth during oral sex. A person who has genital herpes infection can easily pass or transmit the virus to an uninfected person during sex. Both HSV 1 and 2 can produce sores (also called lesions) in and around the vaginal area, on the penis, around the anal opening, and on the buttocks or thighs. Occasionally, sores also appear on other parts of the body where the virus has entered through broken skin. HSV remains in certain nerve cells of the body for life, and can produce symptoms off and on in some infected people.
How does someone get genital herpes?
Most people get genital herpes by having sex with someone who is having a herpes “outbreak.” This outbreak means that HSV is active. When active, the virus usually causes visible sores in the genital area. The sores cast off (shed) viruses that can infect another person. Sometimes, however, a person can have an outbreak and have no visible sores at all. People often get genital herpes by having sexual contact with others who don’t know they are infected or who are having outbreaks of herpes without any sores. A person with genital herpes also can infect a sexual partner during oral sex. The virus is spread only rarely, if at all, by touching objects such as a toilet seat or hot tub.

An Experimental Study on 472 Herbs Relating Antiviral Actions on Herpes Simplex Virus By Zheng Min Shi
Department of Microbiology
Jiangxi Medical University, (330006), China From "Journal of Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine", Vol.10, No.1, pp 39-41, 1990. Using tissue culture method, the above study was primarily concerned with evaluating the antiviral effects of 472 traditional medicinal herbs comprising raw material 10mg/ml, through both initial (qualitative) and repeated (quantitative) screens, on type 1 herpes simplex virus. When dealing with water and alcoholic extracts, herbs found effective during initial screens were reduced after repeated screens by a range of 28.8 - 80.0 percent. Employing the basic value attained by the simultaneous route of drug administration, a stepwise declining of effective herbs would be: The more the routes of drug administration the less the multiple-route simultaneous efficacy of a herb. Through repeated screens, 10 highly effective herbs were identified:
  • Aristolochia debilis Artemisia anomala Lindera strychnifolia Patrina villosa Pinus massiana Prunella vulgaria Pyrrosia lingua Rhus chinensis Sargussum fusiforme and Taraxacum mongolicum
Clinically, among the 78 cases of herpetic keratitis due to HSV1 treated by Pyrrosia lingua and Prunella vulgaris eye drops, a cure was effected in 38 and an improvement in 37 with 3 being of no benefit.

For the clinician, the recurrent nature, variability in clinical presentation, and asymptomatic transmission make genital herpes a difficult disease to control. In fact, the spread of genital herpes in the United States has increased over the past 2 decades despite the availability of effective antiviral therapy. Although infections are common, they often go untreated because patients and physicians do not recognize them. We believe that armed with the most current information on diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of genital herpes, physicians will better serve their patients and curb the epidemic.

What's New Index Search Contact Us June 2001 GENITAL HERPES What is genital herpes? Herpes is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by the herpes simplex viruses type 1 (HSV -1) and type 2 (HSV-2). Most individuals have no or only minimal signs or symptoms from HSV-1 or HSV-2 infection. When signs do occur, they typically appear as one or more blisters on or around the genitals or rectum. The blisters break, leaving tender ulcers (sores) that may take two to four weeks to heal the first time they occur. Typically, another outbreak can appear weeks or months after the first, but it almost always is less severe and shorter than the first episode. Although the infection can stay in the body indefinitely, the number of outbreaks tends to go down over a period of years. How is genital herpes spread? HSV-1 and HSV-2 can be found and released from the sores that the viruses cause, but they also are released between episodes from skin that does not appear to be broken or to have a sore. A person almost always gets HSV-2 infection during sexual contact with someone who has a genital HSV-2 infection. HSV-1 causes infections of the mouth and lips, so-called "fever blisters." A person can get HSV-1 by coming into contact with the saliva of an infected person. HSV-1 infection of the genitals almost always is caused by oral-genital sexual contact with a person who has the oral HSV-1 infection.

A compound in red wine prevents herpes from entering the body
An ingredient of red wine could prevent the spread of herpes, according to scientists. Research carried out in the US has found that the compound in red wine, when daubed on infectious sores, can stop a sufferer passing it on and could even lessen the chance of sores developing fully. The scientists suggest this compound could also be used to treat facial cold sores if rubbed onto the affected area before the sores appear. They also suggest it could be put in condoms or contraceptive foams to prevent the spread of genital herpes. Herpes is caused by two different viruses. The first called herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) causes cold sores. The second is called herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) or genital herpes. Neither are curable or fatal if contracted by an adult. Genital herpes can cause painful blisters, ulcers or crusts in the genital area and the buttocks. It can be dangerous if passed from mother to baby during pregnancy causing blindness and life-threatening illness in the infant.

http://www.herpesalliance.org/resources04.asp
Herpes Simplex and Pregnancy As an expectant parent eagerly awaiting the birth of your new baby, you are probably taking a number of steps to ensure your baby's health. One step many experts recommend is that you become informed about herpes simplex virus (HSV). Infection with this common virus is usually mild in adults; however, in infants, HSV can cause a rare, but serious, illness. What is herpes simplex virus?
HSV can cause sores on the face and lips (facial herpes, for example "cold sores"), or sores on the genitals (genital herpes). HSV-1 is the usual cause of facial herpes, and HSV-2 is the usual cause of genital herpes. But either type of HSV can infect either part of the body. Either type can also infect a newborn baby. How common is herpes simplex virus?
Figures for those infected with HSV-2 vary widely across different countries and between different populations. The prevalence of HSV-2 infection varies worldwide. Around 25% of American adults compared with around 4 14% of Europeans and Australians are infected with the virus. The proportion of genital herpes due to HSV-1 infection is high or increasing in many countries (e.g. England, Scotland, USA, Denmark, the Netherlands and Japan).
