Hidradenitis is a chronic disease of the scent or apocrine glands which causes chronic scarring and pus formation of the axillae and groin areas. It is similar to acne which is a disease of the sebaceous glands. This condition is slightly more common in African-Americans and women. Hidradenitis usually starts as one or more red, tender, swellings in the groin or axilla. Over a period of hours to days the lesions enlarge and often open to the skin surface draining clear to yellow fluid. The involved area then heals with scarring. The condition usually continues for years with periods of flare and remission.
Causes and Associations:
  • For unknown reasons, people with hidradenitis develop plugging or clogging of their apocrine glands. This leads to bacterial infection which can produce pain and odor.
  • Hidradenitis is made worse by being overweight, however this condition is not caused by obesity.

http://www.btinternet.com/~little_willow/barricade/hspages/hs-partners.html
Postscript: Since this page was first written, myself and Adrian have decided to separate. This is nothing to do with HS, but more to do with my other medical conditions and the death of his sister. However, he is still here for me as a friend. Since this time, I have been lucky enough to find a partner who is wonderfully caring and loving, and brought the light back into my life that has been missing for a long time.
The aim of this page is to convey what it's like to be someone who loves or cares for a sufferer of H.S., and how the disease can affect relationships between sufferers and those close to them.
My name is Adrian and I'm Andy's husband. I've known Andy since April 1996, and through that time I've learnt a lot about Hidradenitis and what it does to people.
Hidradenitis Suppurativa is a very difficult and demanding disease to live with if you're a sufferer, but it can also be demanding for those people who love and care for 'the afflicted'. There is a lot of stigma attatched to any disease which causes visible signs of infection, but due to it's intensity and long-lastedness H.S. seems to cause more anguish for sufferers than other similar conditions. As well as the pain endured when a boil (or 'lump' as Andy prefers to call them) is at it's most severe point, many people with H.S. have to endure months or years of anguish from being unable to discuss their condition with anyone close to them. Part of this fear can spring from being deemed 'un-hygienic' by those who are too ignorant to listen to the explanation that H.S. has nothing to do with cleanliness, and also fear from exposing the scarred or active areas, as those of a squeamish disposition may find them unsightly. Once these fears have been overcome and someone with H.S. can discuss their problems freely they will usually find that the disease becomes a lot less stressful, which in itself can ease some of the symptoms. The problem is with finding someone who will listen sympathetically and be supportive.

HIDRADENITIS SUPPURATIVA HS SUFFERS NEED YOUR HELP!
  • Hi, my name is Gary. I am 37 years old and one of many who suffer from HS. 24 years now I have battled with HS and It has gotten to the point where I am unable to work in my business everyday or lead a normal life! This is a terrible disease that has no known cure. Most people don't know I have HS because it's something that I don't like talking about but as time goes on the HS keeps progressing, making it hard for me to do the things I used to do. There is a lot of HS suffers besides myself that have the same troubles and worries as the rest of us, like paying for doctor bills and medicines this can get expensive in a hurry. We need all the help we can get from everyone to fight this disease because it is growing rapidly through out the world. What is HIDRADENITIS? This is an uncommon disorder of unknown cause in which boil-like lumps develop in the groin and sometimes under the arms and under the breasts. The lumps can also be found in other areas, such as behind the ears, in the crease of the buttocks and around the genitals. Although a few hundred papers have been written on HIDRADENITIS, there seems to be relatively little solid knowledge about it.
  • Although there is no medical proof, HIDRADENITIS seems to have been found alongside many disorders that are apparently unrelated, such as Crohn's disease, obesity, Dowling-Degos disease, lymphoedema (swelling of the body tissues caused by a build-up of fluid), a form of arthritis, sarcoidosis, Down's Syndrome and the sexually transmitted infection chlamydia. From the people that have contacted the H.I.D.E. mailing list, there also seems a preponderance of thyroid disorders and autoimmune diseases.

To: "PedTalk (E-mail)" Subject: hidradenitis suppurativa From: "Ricardo Godoy" Date: Fri, 15 Dec 2000 10:32:39 -0500 Importance: Normal Reply-To: "Ricardo Godoy" I have a teenager who intermittently develops painful nodules in her axilla which resolve over a few weeks, with or without antibiotics, leaving a hyperpigmented macule which then fades. The only one I've seen I treated with 14 days of Keflex, although I'm not sure that it really helped. I have seen severe cases of hidradenitis suppurativa with abscess formation and drainage. This is much milder, but I still think that it is the correct diagnosis. Mom is anxious, and doesn't seem to believe the diagnosis. Is there anything I could do to prevent the nodules from recurring? Should I refer her to a dermatologist? Thanks. Karen E-mail: - This message is from PEDTALK - a Pediatric Focused email discussion group. Hidradenitis suppurativa is a potentially serious, chronic, suppurative (pus-producing) disorder of the follicles and sweat glands. Hidradenitis suppurativa develops primarily in the sweat glands located in the armpits, in the groin, around the breasts, and in the anal region. The follicles and ducts become blocked, and bacteria and pus are forced into the surrounding tissue, causing irritation. Abscesses form and can become quite large and eventually break through the skin. Abscesses may open and drain spontaneously. Scar tissue forms in the healing process. Hidradenitis suppurativa can be a socially and physically painful and disabling disease. The bacterium Staphylococcus aureus is usually involved in the condition, and

PARIS, FRANCE - July 4, 2002 - Early results presented at the 20 th World Congress of Dermatology (WCD) suggest that infliximab is associated with objective and subjective improvement in hidradenitis suppurativa.
Dr. T. P. Sullivan, with the University of Miami School of Medicine in Miami, Florida, described his group's experience in five patients with hidradenitis suppurativa treated with infliximab (Remicade), a chimeric monoclonal antibody that inhibits tumour necrosis factor-alpha and is FDA-approved for the treatment of Crohn's disease and rheumatoid arthritis.
The study enrolled five patients (mean age 43 years) who received infliximab 5 mg/kg; past therapies included oral and topical antimicrobials, intralesional and oral glucocorticoids, dapsone, clofazimine, isotretinoin, colchicine, and cyclosporine.
Two patients received a single infusion of infliximab 5 mg/kg, and three received two separate infusions approximately four weeks apart.
