They usually form on the skin but sometimes hives form in the soft tissue of the mouth, eyes and throat. What is going on in the body? Hives are the result of an allergic reaction in the skin. They are caused by the release of histamine. Histamine is released when a person's immune system tries to fight a foreign substance. The release of histamine causes inflammation in the skin. What are the signs and symptoms of the condition? Hives are characterized by itchy red welts and swelling of facial features. Hives can cause a reaction that involves the whole body, not just the skin. This is called anaphylaxis What are the causes and risks of the condition? There are several known factors that cause histamines to be released, and hives to form. The HIVES ... where do I begin... In 1993, 5 adolescents in the small industrial town of FAGERSTA, SWEDEN each receive a letter with a time and place. A year later they, led by the genius of a Mr. RANDY FITZSIMMONS , begin to appear in various public places in and around Fagersta. The response is one of confusion, excitement and contempt. Urticaria is the medical word for hives. Each hive lasts a few hours before fading without a trace. New areas may develop as old areas fade. They can vary in size from as small as a pencil eraser to as large as a dinner plate and may join together to form larger swellings. Hives usually are itchy, but may also burn or sting. Hives are formed by blood plasma leaking out of small blood vessels in the skin. This is caused by the release of a chemical called histamine. Histamine is released from cells called "mast cells" that lie along the blood vessels in the skin. Allergic reactions, chemicals in foods, or medications can cause histamine release. Sometimes it's impossible to find out why hives are forming. Hives are very common - 10-20 percent of the population will have at least one episode in their lifetime. Most episodes of hives disappear quickly in a few days to a few weeks. Occasionally, a person will continue to have hives for many years.

I have three at my home in Nine Mile Falls, Washington, and five others spread out in the community for people who have orchards. I put together this web site dedicated to my favorite hobby, beekeeping. I have some digital pictures of my own hives, and for now I hope that what I have here is a good beginning. I have moved since I started this web site and now the bees occupy beach front property. Currently, it is a winter with very little snow. The bees are in three hives in the boat house, facing the lake. In the summer, lily pad flowers provide plenty of pollen and nectar for them. We also have lots of raspberry bushes everywhere. I started keeping bees about three years ago, and have learned much since then. I got started because of an uncle who did it, and he took the time to show me the ropes.
