9. RxMed: Pharmaceutical Information - TAPAZOLE
Physicians' prescribing information for this antithyroid medication, sometimes prescribed to treat a hyperthyroid disorder. From RXmed.
http://www.rxmed.com/b.main/b2.pharmaceutical/b2.1.monographs/CPS- Monographs/CP
TAPAZOLE® Lilly Methimazole Antithyroid Action And Clinical Pharmacology: Methimazole inhibits the synthesis of thyroid hormones and thus is effective in the treatment of hyperthyroidism. The drug does not inactivate existing thyroxine and triiodothyronine that are stored in colloid or are circulating in the blood, nor does it interfere with the effectiveness of thyroid hormones given by mouth or by injection.
The actions and use of methimazole are similar to those of propylthiouracil. On a weight basis, the drug is at least 10 times as potent as propylthiouracil, but methimazole may be less consistent in action.
Methimazole is readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. It is metabolized rapidly and requires frequent administration. Methimazole is excreted in the urine.
Indications And Clinical Uses: The medical treatment of hyperthyroidism. Long-term therapy may lead to remission of the disease. May be used to ameliorate hyperthyroidism in preparation for subtotal thyroidectomy or radioactive iodine therapy. When thyroidectomy is contraindicated or not advisable.
Contra-Indications: Hypersensitivity to methimazole.

Member of the American Association of Feline Practitioners, American Veterinary Medical Association, and South Carolina Veterinary Medical Association. The Feline Hyperthyroid Treatment Center of Charleston is housed within the Animal Medical Center of Mount Pleasant, in the Charleston, South Carolina area. The medical center is a full service small animal hospital offering a wide array of expanded services. Adjacent to the hospital is a pet boutique (Pet Provisions) and a large comfortable boarding facility (Best Friends Boarding) specializing in the pampering of your pets. Charleston is located at the intersection of two major highways. We are within a three-hour drive from Savannah, Jacksonville, Columbia, Charlotte and Myrtle Beach. Many people have combined their trip with a mini-vacation to the "Holy City", Kiawah/ Seabrook or the Isle of Palms. If you are from further away consider sending your cat (with your vet's approval) by air. Charleston International Airport serves Delta and USAir. We can arrange for pick up and return by a veterinary technician for an additional $30 each way. The Treatment center is designed with your cat's comfort in mind. The room is decorated in soft colors along with plants and soft classical music to soothe those anxious kitties. Windows within the room allow our patients to see out of the room as well as for us to see in without disturbing their well-deserved rest. More importantly our staff is what makes our center special by offering a great deal of attention and care.

HYPERTHYROIDISM In Thyroid Theory (click on Hyperthyroidism Theory to the left.) you can read an outline of my theory of the causes of thyroid disease. This section is an elaboration of those ideas and a description of the deficiencies that lead to hyperthyroidism. Here is a list of what I believe are the possible causes of hyperthyroidism (Graves' disease), in my "best-guess" rank order:
  • Inadequate copper in the diet. Excessive cadmium intake such as from smoking or excessive consumption of green leafy vegetables. Excessive zinc intake for the amount of copper intake. (Too high a zinc/copper ratio) Excessive aluminum intake. Low vitamins which metabolize copper. Low minerals which work with copper such as iron and sulfur. Celiac disease or other digestive deficiencies. Progesterone use, including progesterone-based birth control pills. High estrogen levels or estrogen replacement therapy combined with smoking, consumption of excessive green leafy vegetables, or inadequate copper intake. Estrogen mimics from environmental sources including consumption of canned food.

Causes Clinical Signs Diagnosis Treatment [NOTE: To appreciate the content of this page, The reader is encouraged to read the thyroid hormone primer before proceeding down this page.... Introduction (Causes) Feline hyperthyroidism is a disease of middle and older age cats resulting from excessive amounts of circulating thyroid hormones (T4 and T3 ). The cause is most often associated with benign but functional adenomatous hyperplasia of one or both lobes of the thyroid gland or of extra-thyroid-gland thyroid tissues. These tissues secrete thyroid hormone autonomously, in the absence of TSH secretion from the pituitary gland ( see primer for explanation ). Rarely (only 1-2%), hyperthyroidism occurs as the result of a malignant, functional thyroid carcinoma.
Clinical Signs Excessive thyroid hormone results in the stimulation of metabolic process processes in nearly all tissues of the body . There are many potential clinical signs, ( see pictorial montage below too ) but the most common are:
    • Weight loss, decreased muscle mass, emaciation, weakness
    • Increased appetite
    • Tachycardia (rapid heart) and hypertension (high blood pressure)
    • Heart murmur and/or arrythmias, secondary hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (heart muscle thickening with compromised cardiac performance, possible congestive heart failure)

W elcome to the Thyroid Federation International Home Page. Through this site we plan to keep you informed of the activities of our growing organization and the development of existing and future thyroid member organizations in the world. The Thyroid Federation International first convened in Toronto at the 11th International Thyroid Congress in September 1995. The vision of a world thyroid organization to deal with the problems of thyroid disease in a global perspective was first advocated by Diana Meltzer Abramsky, C.M., B.A. who in 1980 founded the Thyroid Foundation of Canada in Kingston, Ontario Canada - the first lay thyroid organization in the world. Since then, the idea has received enthusiastic support and leadership from Dr. Lawrence C. Wood of the Thyroid Foundation of America, the Federation's first president. Starting from a base of six member organizations, the Federation has grown to include thyroid organizations in many parts of the world, including Europe, North America, Australia and Japan. Our main objective is to assist all those interested to start a thyroid patient organization in their country or locale. For more information see:

Hyperthyroid Abdominal Pain Irritable Bowel Syndrome ... Hypertension Hyperthyroid "I am a 52 year old man with a history of Graves disease and diagnosed one year ago and confirmed with TSH from blood test. A thyroid scan was done and showed no nodules. I was placed Tapazole for four months and went into remission and followed by a relapse eight months later. With the relapse, I decided to find an acupuncturist with a real herbal medicine background and fortunately, I found Dr. Tao from Internet. My symptom included palpitations, weight loss of 5 lbs, scratchy eyes and fatigue. I feel much better after second treatment. On the third treatment, I have no eye symptom and palpitation. In addition the acupuncture treatment, I also taking three Chinese herbs, one for the thyroid, one for the palpitations and one for the eyes. After I finished one cycle-12 visits, I do feel calm and much less stress than before. Now I come once every two weeks for maintenance and very satisfied the progress so far."
