hyperthyroid and tachycardia...
From: Cindy McCoy anonymous@obgyn.net
Sat, 12 Jun 1999 19:29:47 -0400
I am 20 weeks pregnant. I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and tachycardia at 8 weeks. I have been on propylthiauracil (sp?) and inderal since then. I have noticed within the last week that the tachycardia is getting worse. I am told that I won't be able to know my thyroid levels for 30 days. I am worried about the baby at this point. I know the baby may get tachycardia because it is compensating for me. Can this cause the baby's heart to stop beating? Are there any other dangers to having a hyperthyroid and tachycardia? Thanks.

There is a lot of information available about hypothyroid, but I very rarely find info about hyperthyroid. My thyroid levels are TSH .47, Free T3 274, Free T4 1.1 I have had 2 early m/cs. My dr. seems to think my levels are ok and the m/c is unrelated, but I am unsure. Before we made the move to Arizona a year ago, we had to get our two cats checked out at the vets office. We had to fly them out with us, so the airlines had to have a certificate of health before loading them on the plane (we wanted to keep them in the cabin, so we had to go and do it. I don't think we would have had to if we kept them with the other animals, but Mom and I wouldn't go for that).
We had a hunch that something might be wrong with our oldest cat Tiger. He was 15 and getting skinny, even though he eats like a horse. So when the vet checked on him, she detected a heart murmur, and attributed it to hyperthyroidism. She told us, that as soon as we got to Arizona, see a vet and get medicine prescribed for him.
So when we got there, a week later we took him to the vet. We had to. Tiger was getting rather weak, not even being able to make it to the chair at the breakfast bar in our house. He would jump and not make it. We had no choice but to do something about it now, or it may be too late.
So we took him to the vets office here. The vet there took a blood test and sent us home. He called a couple days later to tell us it was indeed hyperthyroidsm and that he prescribed medicine for us to give him.

Less than 2% of hyperthyroid cases involve a malignancy. Because hyperthyroidcats are usually over 8 years of age, there is a degree of risk involved.
http://www.theanimalmedicalclinic.com/hyperthyroid.htm
Hyperthyroidism in Cats The thyroid gland is located in the neck and plays a very important role in regulating the body's rate of metabolism. Hyperthyroidism is a disorder characterized by the overproduction of thyroid hormone and a subsequent increase in the metabolic rate. This is a fairly common disease of older cats. Although the thyroid gland enlarges, it is usually a nonmalignant change (benign). Less than 2% of hyperthyroid cases involve a malignancy. Many organs are affected by this disease, including the heart. The heart is stimulated to pump faster and more forcefully; eventually, the heart enlarges to meet these increase demands for blood flow. The increased pumping pressure leads to a greater output of blood and high blood pressure. About 80% of cats with hyperthyroidism have high blood pressure. Contributing Factors Advancing age is the main factor that increases a cat’s risk for hyperthyroidism. Environmental and dietary risk factors have been investigated and may play a role in predisposing cats to hyperthyroidism, though the specific mechanisms are not known. No individual breed is known to be at increased risk, although the Siamese appears to have a 10-fold lower risk of developing hyperthyroidism than other breeds.

Dept. of Physiology, Faculty of Medicine, Charles University, Lidicka 1, Plzen, CZ SEM. Controls n PTU n n n RA LA Peptide concentrations in atria of hypothyroid rats were significantly (p 0,001) increased compared to controls. In contrast, hyperthyroidism resulted in transient decrease in VIP concentrations in the both atria (p 0,01), since peptide levels in atria of rats treated with thyroxine and killed 5 days after the cessation of treatment did not differ from control values. In conclusion, thyroid hormones seem to interact with VIP-ergic innervation in rat heart atria. The mechanism of this effect needs to be further investigated. [1] L. J. Many cats are both hyperthyroid and diabetic. Special considerations are takenfor treating a diabetic hyperthyroid cat. hyperthyroidism and Diabetes.

Hyperthyroidism and Diabetes What is it? Signs Effects Diagnosis ... References What is Hyperthyroidism?
Hyperthyroidism is the most common endocrine disorder in cats, and is one of the most common diseases of older cats. Most cats diagnosed with hyperthyroidism are over 10 years old. It is not unusual to have both a diabetic and hyperthyroid cat. Our cat Barney is treated for both diabetes and hyperthyroidism. Hyperthyroidism is rare in dogs. The information presented here is for cats.
Hyperthyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland, a small double-lobed gland in the neck, produces an excess amount of thyroid hormones. The thyroid gland produces two hormones, thyroxine (T4) and triiodithyronine (T3). In most cats, hyperthyroidism is the result of too many active cells in the thryoid gland. Very rarely is it caused by thyroid cancer (1-2%). Treatment of hyperthyroidism is usually very successful.
Signs
Typical signs of hyperthyroidism include
  • weight loss increased appetite vomiting excessive drinking excessive urination hyperactivity diarrhea the coat may look dirty and dull some cats have very rapid toenail growth or thick nails some cats display aggression a few cats (less than 10 percent) have decreased appetite, depression, and weakness

What is Hyperthyroidism? Treatment options Radioactive Iodine-131
Feline hyperthyroidism is a disorder resulting from excessive thyroid hormone. The disease occurs in middle to older aged cats without sex or breed predilection. Though functional benign enlargement (adenoma) is most common (98%), thyroid carcinoma (cancer) is another cause (2%). The cat's thyroid gland has two lobes - about 70% of cats have both lobes affected. Symptoms: May include - Weight loss, poor haircoat, rapid heart rate, voracious appetite or thirst, anxiety or nervousness, diarrhea or vomiting. Diagnosis: lump or mass in the neck detected on a physical exam; elevated levels of thyroid hormone in the blood; isotope imaging test that shows the size, shape and location of the thyroid glands. Treatment: There are three options - anti-thyroid medication, surgery, or radioiodine therapy Prognosis: Generally good. Cats with severe disease involving many organ systems may not survive. However, most cats, even teenagers, respond very well to treatment.
Our veterinarians are fully qualified to treat cats diagnosed with feline hyperthyroidism. We can suggest the best treatment for your cat and help you manage the problem. We have extensive experience with medical, surgical and radioiodine treatments, complications and follow up management.

http://www.fulvic.com/healthalert/thyroid.htm
Stimulate, nourish, and repair thyroid function with nature’s remedies while relieving deadly symptoms; fulvic acid offers hope Natural therapies can prevent and treat thyroid disease, including hypothyroidsim (underactive thyroid), hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid), Graves Disease and Wilson’s Syndrome, which are the underlying causes of many serious illnesses. A prime objective for anyone with a thyroid problem is to eliminate intake of all toxins, while removing toxic buildup within the body. Thyroid malfunction, both overactive and underactive, is generally due to autoimmune response by the body. This is where the body’s immune system produces antibodies which attack the gland because the tissues seem foreign to the body. Normal hormone production is upset. Generally, the cause is due to buildup of dangerous toxins, chlorinated substances, viruses, pathogens, infections, pesticides, altered enzymes or hormones, etc., in the tissues of the thyroid gland. Such conditions can also cause lumps, tumors, and cancer. Outpatient medical hospital studies on overactive thyroid had 90.9% cure rate within a six month period when patients were treated with a fulvic acid medication.
