The Gist: The King of Hypochondria? by Michel Wright, BET.com Gossip Contributor Posted Nov. 8, 2001 OK, I'm gonna try and make this the NEXT to the last time I talk about Jermajesty's uncle (Y'all remember when Jermaine Jackson gave his new son that "unusual" name, right?). Had to say NEXT cuz ya never know if this dude will just break out and transform into the Invisible Man or something. Anyway, it seems a certain somebody seems to be getting stranger by the minute. The latest on the dude is that he's scared he has anthrax. Uh huh, supposedly this would-be King of Pop had a very deep and personal conversation with his, you ready? ... his PSYCHIC FRIEND, (not Miss Cleo either) Uri Geller. Who? Don't ask me cuz I ain't heard of Uri Geller either. Anyway, supposedly MJ, the majestic one, confided that he and the children (make that Paris and Prince) were about to take a trip to the doctor to be tested for anthrax. He said that he was "very sick right now." He complained that it was "hard to breathe and when I swallow it stings." Adding to his disclosure story, he also spoke about the tension and unrest he still feels about his father, Joseph. He said that whenever he's in his presence even now, "...I feel dizzy, like I'm going to faint."

March 1 - Something called the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse put out a study last week noting with alarm that a quarter of all the alcohol sold in America is consumed by teenagers. The New York Times reported on Wednesday that the study was "wrong" because it "had not applied the standard statistical techniques in deriving that number."
This makes it sound like the error was arcane and maybe a matter of interpretation, but the Times writer, Tamar Lewin, goes on to explain it quite clearly: Forty percent of the survey sample was teenagers, but teenagers are less than 20 percent of the general population. Correcting for this flat-out mistake produces a figure more like 11 percent of alcohol consumption that is by teenagers.
But this raises other questions, or it ought to, but didn’t among news organizations that publicized the original number. Shouldn’t you want to know what percentage of the population is teenagers before you decide how alarming it is that they consume 25 percent of the alcohol? Yet the Associated Press, CNN, and others passed along the 25 percent figure, and the alarm about it, without even raising this crucial issue.
99 BOTTLES OF BEER
It is not obviously alarming that teenagers consume 11 percent of the booze if they are 20 percent of the population. But then it would not be obviously alarming that they consumed 25 percent of the booze if they were 40 percent of the population. In other words, the alarm would be dubious even if the original statistic were correct. Now, maybe you believe that teenage drinking is a problem anyway, and maybe you’re right. But a news release announcing, "Study Concludes Teenagers Drink Less Than Half as Much as General Population" is not going to rally many new troops to the cause.

Hypochondria A term used to denote an obsession with illness and medication. A feeling that one is sick or suffering from a disease. The term hypochondria was first introduced in Ancient Greece. Literally translated, it means "under"= (hypo); "cartilage of ribs" =(chondria). Most of us can recall a time when we have been scared that we have a particular illness. If one has not personally experienced this, one probably know someone who has. When something about our body seems abnormal, it usually crosses our mind to be afraid. That lump could be cancer, or that pain could be a heart attack. If necessary, we get medical attention and our fear is usually removed. Individuals with hypochondria continuously feel that something in their body is not right and they attribute the abnormality to disease. This fear is constant and produces tremendous anxiety, interfering with their lives in profound and disturbing ways.

July 13, 2002 hypochondria So I am not sure if Mom's hypochondria (you know, the one that killed her) has past down into me or what.
I have been to the doctor like four times for the ear infection (he has asked me to make these appointments as follow up visits) and Thursday he said that my ear looked clear and I should be fine now. He had some blood drawn for general tests. My ear still has a lot of pressure that he said I should take Robutusson for, but my lymph gland or node or whatever still hurts, like even when I turn my head it hurts in that spot in my neck. So they called me with the test results and I asked about wether it showed an infection and they said that it looked fine. My cholesterol and triglicerides were high so I have to cut down on my fat, sugar and salt. He wants to see me in 3 mos to recheck it all. Whatever. Patti got a clean bill of health a month before her heart attack. Really unless they do the stress test on your heart or hear a murmer they cannot tell what is going on.
I guess that I just won't worry about it.

Democracy Hypochondria
A Presidential Commission endorses a nutty complaint.
By Michael Kinsley
Posted Friday, August 3, 2001, at 12:00 AM PT
"For decades," says the National Commission on Federal Election Reform in its report issued this week, "public opinion surveys have disclosed abiding irritation with early projection of election results by the news media." It's true: Nearly everyone thinks that it is very naughty of the TV networks to project election results before voting is over. Many people who hear the networks call an election before they have exercised their franchise believe, in all sincerity, that their votes are being stolen. But, like primitives who believe their souls are being stolen when someone takes their photograph, these people are mistaken. It is a form of democratic hypochondria. The Commission, appointed by President Bush and chaired by Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter, seems dead to the irony of citing poll results to justify a call for the suppression of poll results. The Commission apparently does not worry that by revealing that public opinion is settled on this issue, it has somehow denied you the right to make up your own mind. The Commission not only is not alarmed that readers of its report might be influenced by these poll results—it thinks that people ought to be influenced by these poll results.
