Wilhelm M; Tony HP; Medizinische Poliklinik, Universitat Wurzburg. Abstract: Infection continues to remain a major problem in immunodeficient patients. The spectrum of pathogens differs, depending on whether one is dealing with an unspecific immune defect or a specific hormonal or cellular defect. This means that a knowledge of the type of deficiency presenting is of importance for the empirical treatment that is often required. Infection can be prevented by the replacement of immunoglobulins, in particular in the case of hormonal immune defects. The use of cytokines holds out some promise of achieving a similar effect in the treatment of cellular immune defects. Immune Defiency Foundation Opens Center for Primary Immunodeficiencies at Johns Hopkins University Hospital
"The Immune Deficiency Foundation Center for Primary Immune Deficiency will be a valuable asset to patients with primary immune deficiencies. The center will provide patients with the consultative services of renowned immunologists Dr. Jerry Winkelstein and Dr. Howard Lederman, regardless of ability to pay," said Marcia Boyle, co-founder of IDF. "We are grateful to be associated with a team that includes Bayer, whose generous gift made this center a reality, Johns Hopkins University, and Drs. Winkelstein and Lederman. I personally credit Dr. Winkelstein with saving my son's life, and providing essential medical guidance to IDF, which has helped us positively impact the lives of patients around the world." Primary immune deficiency diseases are disorders in which part of the body's immune system is missing or does not function properly. There are a wide variety of primary immune deficiencies. The World Health Organization recognizes approximately 85 primary immune deficiency diseases. Some disorders, such as selective IgA Deficiency, can be quite common, occurring as often as 1/500 to 1/1000 individuals. Others may be as rare as one individual affected per million. In addition to consultative services, the Immune Deficiency Foundation Center at Johns Hopkins will provide appropriate laboratory tests, access to therapy, and specialists, as well as providing public and professional education services.

BAXTER TO ACQUIRE ALPHA-1 ANTITRYPSIN AND OTHER ASSETS FROM ALPHA THERAPEUTIC CORPORATION DEERFIELD, Ill., December 20, 2002 Baxter Healthcare Corporation today announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire certain assets from Alpha Therapeutic Corporation. Alpha Therapeutic Corporation is owned by Mitsubishi Pharma Corporation. Under the agreement, Baxter will obtain Alpha Therapeutic Corporation's Alpha-1 Antitrypsin (A1P1) product, which is undergoing FDA review for the treatment of hereditary emphysema, and all of Alpha Therapeutic Corporation's plasma collection operations, which include 42 FDA-licensed plasma collection centers in the United States, and a central testing laboratory.
"Alpha-1 Antitrypsin will expand Baxter's BioScience product portfolio of biopharmaceuticals, as well as broaden our therapeutic focus in the pulmonology arena," said Thomas Glanzmann, senior vice president and president, Baxter BioScience. "In addition, this transaction further enhances the economics of our plasma business by increasing the number of fractions Baxter obtains from a liter of plasma."
Alpha Therapeutic Corporation will also lease to Baxter those facilities necessary for the production of A1P1, pending FDA licensure and the transfer of these manufacturing activities to Baxter facilities.

IMPORTANT DRUG WARNING
Dear Doctor: This letter is intended to alert physicians to safety precautions that should be taken to reduce the potential risk of ACUTE RENAL FAILURE (ARF) associated with the administration of Immune Globulin Intravenous (Human) (IGIV) products. Since IGIVs were first introduced in 1981, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has received over 114 worldwide (approximately 83 U.S.) adverse event reports a of renal dysfunction and/or acute renal failure associated with the administration of these products . Although acute renal failure was successfully managed in the majority of cases, deaths were reported in 17 patients worldwide. Many of the patients who died had serious underlying conditions. Preliminary evidence suggests that IGIV products containing sucrose may present a greater risk for this complication. Hyperosmolality of certain reconstituted products, as well as differences in stabilizer sugar choice and content between IGIVs, may be among the factors that have contributed to different reporting rates for renal dysfunction among the various IGIV products. A disproportionate share of the cases (approximately 88% of U.S. reports) have been associated with the sucrose-containing products. The sucrose containing products are (A) the product manufactured by the Central Laboratory Blood Transfusion Service, Swiss Red Cross (SRC), (Sandoglobulin
