Aptly named, heartburn is the name given to the burning sensation of indigestion in the stomach and/or chest. It often occurs when hydochloric acid, which is used to digest food in the stomach, backs up. This causes the esophagus to become irritated. Under normal circumstances, the esophageal sphincter closes to prevent the acid from entering the sensitive tissues of the esophagus, but when the sphincter is not functioning properly, acid gets through, into the area. This is called gastroespophageal reflux. People with hiatal hernia often suffer from heartburn, as do those excessively consuming fatty or fried foods, coffee, alcohol, citrus fruits, chocolate and/or tomato based foods. Indigestion, Heartburn, and Low Stomach Acidity Also indexed as: Bloating (Indigestion), Dyspepsia, Flatulence, Gas (Stomach), Hypochlorhydria, Poor Digestion, Stomach Upset, Wind gastritis (inflammation of the lining of the stomach), or by an ulcer of the stomach or duodenum (also called peptic ulcer ). In some cases, such as lactose intolerance , symptoms of indigestion are due to a specific cause that requires specific treatment. Sometimes symptoms associated with indigestion are caused by diseases unrelated to the gastrointestinal tract. For example, ovarian cancer may cause a sensation of bloating. Anyone with symptoms of indigestion should be properly diagnosed by a healthcare professional before assuming that the information below is applicable to their situation. The most common cause of heartburn is gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), in which the sphincter between the esophagus and the stomach is not functioning properly. Another, related cause of heartburn is hiatal hernia, in which a small portion of the stomach protrudes through the aforementioned sphincter. According to Jonathan Wright, MD, another cause of heartburn can be too

You may know exactly what causes your indigestion, or perhaps you need to have it checked out. Here is a good medical overview of indigestion from the National Institute of Health Publication No. 02-4549: Indigestion, also known as upset stomach or dyspepsia, is discomfort or a burning feeling in the upper abdomen, often accompanied by nausea, abdominal bloating, belching, and sometimes vomiting. Indigestion might be caused by a disease in the digestive tract, but for many people, it results from eating too much, eating too quickly, eating high-fat foods, or eating during stressful situations. Smoking, drinking too much alcohol, using medications that irritate the stomach lining, being tired, and having ongoing stress can also cause indigestion or make it worse. Some people have persistent indigestion that is not related to any of these factors. This type of indigestioncalled functional or nonulcer dyspepsiamay be caused by a problem in the muscular squeezing action of the stomach (motility).

indigestion refers to any number of gastrointestinal complaints, whichcan include wind (belching or flatulence) and upset stomach.
http://www.hollandandbarrett.com/Concern/Indigestion.htm
Indigestion, Heartburn, and Low Stomach Acidity Also indexed as: Bloating (Indigestion), Dyspepsia, Flatulence, Gas (Stomach), Poor Digestion, Stomach Upset, Wind gastritis (inflammation of the lining of the stomach), or by an ulcer of the stomach or duodenum (also called peptic ulcer Heartburn: One cause of heartburn is a condition called hiatal hernia. With this condition, a small portion of the stomach gets caught in the sphincter that separates the esophagus from the stomach. A hiatal hernia usually does not require any specific therapy, but any accompanying gastroesophageal reflux (regurgitation of acid into the esophagus) should be treated. This same condition can occur if there is a defective sphincter between the esophagus and the stomach. Low stomach acidity: According to Jonathan Wright, M.D., and some other doctors of nutritional medicine, another cause of heartburn can be too little stomach acid. This may seem to be a paradox, but based on the clinical experience of doctors such as Dr. Wright, supplementing with betaine HCl (a compound that contains hydrochloric acid) often relieves the symptoms of heartburn and improves digestion in individuals who have hypochlorhydria (low stomach acid). The amount of betaine HCl used varies with the size of the meal and with the amount of protein ingested. Typical amounts recommended by doctors range from 600 to 2,400 mg per meal. Use of betaine HCl should be monitored by a healthcare practitioner.

Most Americans approximately one in three suffer from occasional indigestion, an umbrella term used to describe symptoms such as heartburn, upset stomach, bloating, gas and slow digestion. This figure explains why peddling over-the-counter digestive remedies is big business. While antacids can provide temporary symptom relief, constant use can be detrimental, since they interfere with the absorption of vitamins, minerals and other medications. Practicing prevention and gently supporting the digestive system with nutrients is a more effective long-term solution.

Indigestion Indigestion, stomach pains, bloating, nausea and discomfort arise from problems within the stomach and gullet (oesophagus). Digestion takes place in the stomach where the stomach lining produces hydrochloric acid. The acid in the stomach has a pH of around 4 - 5 (compared to the slightly alkaline pH of 7.2 - 7.4 of the tissue in the rest of the body). Normally the stomach wall is well protected against the effects of the acid. However alcohol, excessive coffee, smoking, chemicals from processed food, poor eating habits, such as swallowing unchewed food and eating too much, spices from curries, all break down the stomach's protection. The acid then attacks the stomach wall, which causes gastritis and pain from indigestion. Infection in the stomach, with a bacteria known as helico pylori, also breaks down the stomach wall protection. Helico bacteria infection can be diagnosed with a home test kit, **** (( LINK TO PRODUCTS) by a blood test from your local GP, or a 'breath test' at the local hospital.

Indigestion - Dyspepsia Indigestion may result from a problem in the stomach or intestines, or it may be a disorder in itself. Symptoms can include belching, gas, abdominal pain, grumbling noises, a bloated feeling, nausea, vomiting, and a burning sensation after eating. Swallowing air by chewing with your mouth open, talking while chewing, or gulping down food can cause indigestion. Drinking liquids with meals contributes to indigestion be cause it dilutes the enzymes needed for digestion. Certain foods and drinks can cause indigestion because they irritate the digestive tract. These include: alcohol, caffeine, vinegar, and greasy/spicy/ or refined foods. Other factors that can cause or contribute to indigestion include intestinal obstruction, mal-absorption, peptic ulcers , and disorders of the pancreas, liver, or gallbladder . Food allergies and intolerances (such as lactose intolerance) also can cause indigestion. If food is not digested properly, it can ferment in the intestines, producing hydrogen and carbon dioxide. Foods high in complex carbohydrates, such as grains and legumes, are the primary foods responsible for gas because they are difficult to digest, and therefore more likely to yield undigested particles on which the intestinal bacteria act. Psychological factors such as stress anxiety , worry, or disappointment can disturb the nervous mechanism that controls the contractions of stomach and intestinal muscles. A lack of digestive enzymes can also cause intestinal problems.
