As practitioners of Oriental Medicine, we are aware that the emotions play an important role in the etiology and manifestation of disease. Like all symptoms, emotional ones can be a signal. We know that emotional symptoms can point to a disharmony in a particular organ system, and that particular physical and energetic disharmonies can also lead to emotional symptom patterns. In our clinical practices we see that more and more of our patients are exploring the correlations among their emotional states, personal histories and physical symptoms. Chinese herbs can be a powerful tool in assisting clients to deal with difficult emotional symptoms. They can provide clarity and balance, take the edge off of emotions that feel "out of control," and aid in the psycho-therapeutic process.
While we believe that all herbs have psycho-spiritual energetics, we find the following formulas especially helpful in dealing with emotional symptoms:
Salvia Ten Formula

This formula is indicated for depression. Symptoms of depression are: anhedonia (inability to feel pleasure or happiness from experiences that are ordinarily pleasurable), lack of energy or fatigue almost every day, significant weight loss or weight gain, insomnia or hypersomnia, inability to concentrate or make decisions, feelings of worthlessness, guilt, or despair, recurrent thoughts of death or suicide. The herbs in Salvia Ten circulate Qi and Blood and free the emotions. The tonic herbs support the general vitality. Insomnia and Other Related Sleep Problems COMMON CHARACTERISTICS
Insomnia - the inability to sleep, or to sleep satisfactorily - is the most common sleep disorder. It varies from restless or disturbed sleep to difficulty in falling asleep, to a reduction in the usual time spent sleeping. In the extreme, it may involve complete wakefulness. Requirements for sleep vary widely. Most adults need the traditional seven or eight hours of sleep a night, but some adults are "short sleepers" and function well on only three or four hours. Many people overestimate the amount of sleep they need and underestimate the amount they actually get during a restless night. Generally there is no need for concern, even if an unbroken night's sleep is rare. However if loss of sleep impairs a person's ability to function well during the day, it might indicate a problem. SLEEPING PATTERNS

Insomnia can take various forms: difficulty falling asleep (sleep onset insomnia), difficulty staying asleep, and early wakening. Sleeplessness is common during pregnancy, especially in the later weeks. The elderly typically sleep lightly and fitfully. Physical situations can complicate sleep patterns: the need to urinate frequently, leg cramps, painful conditions such as arthritis, symptomatic asthma or other medical problems and restless legs syndrome can all interfere with both sleep onset and sleep maintenance. Social situations can disturb sleep, too. Arguing, watching exciting programs on television late at night, consuming excessive caffeine or alcohol or eating a large meal close to bedtime, vigorous exercise less than six hours before retiring may disturb sleep patterns.

Rated R Runtime: 1hr 58min Starring: Al Pacino, Hilary Swank, Robin Williams, Martin Donovan, Nicky Katt MFG Rating: 3/5 Insomnia is the second major movie from director Chris Nolan. His first effort was the critically acclaimed and totally unique film Memento. We are fans of that flick as well and looked forward to seeing what he could do here especially with Al Pacino in the starring role. The result is a solid, albeit unspectacular, effort. Pacino plays Will Dormer, a detective from Los Angeles with a lot on his mind. Dormer, along with his partner, is under investigation by internal affairs in L.A. They are shipped off to Nightmute, Alaska to help with a murder investigation and get them out of the spotlight for a bit. Nightmute is a tiny town where nothing much happens including sunsets. They are far enough north that in the summer it is daylight 24 hours a day. Dormer is tired and stressed before he even gets there. It gets much much worse for him. And to top it all off, he can't sleep because the sun is shining into his room even at 3AM. We can't tell you much more without spoiling the movie, a taboo here at Movies for Guys. Suffice to say this is a murder mystery with some very interesting twists.
