61. Insomnia
All are symptoms of insomnia, the inadequate or poorquality sleep experiencedby over one-half of American adults — more often in women and the elderly
http://www.sleepfoundation.org/answers/insomnia.html
Have difficulty sleeping 3 nights a week or more
sleep diary can help you report these symptoms to your doctor.
Types of Insomnia:
  • Short term or acute insomnia, due to a temporary situation such as stress, jet lag, change or loss in a job or relationship, can last up to one month and is treatable. It is important to address the underlying cause. Effective and safe prescription medications, such as hypnotics, are available.
Long-term, chronic or primary insomnia, which is experienced for a month or longer, can be due to many causes such as underlying medical, physical or psychological condition, another sleep disorder or adopting poor sleep habits over time. It is essential to get a medical diagnosis. In addition to an appropriate use of medications, education on behavioral and other techniques as well as good sleep practices can improve sleep.
Consequences of Insomnia:
Insomnia is a risk factor for depression and can significantly affect your quality of life. Consequences of not getting enough good sleep can include daytime fatigue, impaired mood, depression and psychological distress, decreased ability to concentrate, problem-solve, make decisions, risk for injury, driving drowsy, and illness.

PRIMARY INSOMNIA IS A CONDITION ON ITS OWN Insomnia can refer to either difficulty getting to sleep or difficulty staying asleep, or both. Problems with sleep are often associated with many conditions, including medical and psychiatric illnesses, as well as use of drugs, alcohol and medications. However, insomnia often simply occurs on its own, and is then referred to as "primary insomnia." Insomnia can be short- or long-lasting. Transient insomnia (for example the sleeplessness that occurs just before a big test) is very common and is considered a normal stress reaction that typically disappears as the stress passes. Chronic insomnia, on the other hand, refers to sleep problems that have lasted over 6 months. When stress becomes long-term, or in individuals who are predisposed to insomnia (sleep complaints run in families), the insomnia may become more long-lasting and require treatment. INSOMNIA SOMETIMES CAUSES MORE INSOMNIA Sometimes, paradoxically, the habits that people develop to cope with their nighttime sleeplessness delays the return of normal sleep patterns. These problematic habits include napping during the daytime, giving up on regular exercise because of fatigue, or drinking excessive amounts of coffee to promote alertness.

Phytotherapy aids in benzodiazepine withdrawal
The author, a phytotherapist and pharmacist, mentions 28 plants that are effectively used by the clinic for anxiolytic, sedative, muscle relaxant, antidepressant, and/or adaptogenic effects. Seven are singled out for detailed discussion: valerian ( Valeriana officinalis L. Valerianaceae), kava ( Piper methysticum G. Forster, Piperaceae), passionflower ( Passiflora incarnata L. Passifloraceae), manuka ( Leptospermum scoparium Hypericum perforatum L. Clusiaceae), ashwaganda ( Withania somnifera (L.) Dunal, Solanaceae), and schisandra ( Schisandra chinensis (Turcz.) Baillon, Schisandraceae).
Part of the author's rationale for using these plants is that some of them contain constituents shown to act as agonists at the central benzodiazepine receptors in a manner similar to the drugs themselves. Kava, Passiflora incarnata and P. coerulea

Insomnia comes in many different flavors.
Difficulty falling asleep
No problem falling asleep but difficulty staying asleep (many awakenings)
Waking up too early
How much sleep does a person need?
Enough to feel alert during the day. Typically 7 to 9 hours (varies from person to person) of good quality sleep.
Three basic types of Insomnia
Transient insomnia - lasting for a few nights
Short-term insomnia - two or four weeks of poor sleep
Chronic insomnia - poor sleep that happens most nights and last a month or longer
Transient and short-term insomnia generally occur in people who are temporarily experiencing one or more of the following:
stress
environmental noise
extreme temperatures change in the surrounding environment
sleep/wake schedule problems such as those due to jet lag
medication side effects Chronic insomnia is more complex and often results from a combination of factors, including underlying physical or mental disorders. One of the most common causes of chronic insomnia is depression. Other underlying causes include arthritis, kidney disease, heart failure, asthma, sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome, Parkinson's disease, and hyperthyroidism. However, chronic insomnia may also be due to behavioral factors, including the misuse of caffeine, alcohol, or other substances; disrupted sleep/wake cycles as may occur with shift work or other nighttime activity schedules; and chronic stress.

After making one of the most unconventional thrillers in motion picture history (MEMENTO), Nolan decided to remake the quite unusual 1997 Norwegian film INSOMNIA, which starred Stellan Skarsgård. The irony is that Nolan's version is a completely conventional, big budget Hollywood thriller filled with star power, including Oscar winners Al Pacino (SCENT OF A WOMAN), Hilary Swank (BOYS DON'T CRY) and Robin Williams (GOOD WILL HUNTING). I expected Nolan to magnify the original's unconventional aspects, not to diminish them. Don't get me wrong, the result is solid entertainment from start to finish, but it is certainly nothing worth putting on best of the year lists as MEMENTO definitely was. (MEMENTO was my top pick last year.)

Counting sheep no aid to insomnia
Counting sheep is too mundane to banish worries, researchers concluded LONDON, England Insomniacs are more likely to fall asleep by imagining a relaxing scene than by counting sheep, scientists have found. Researchers at Oxford University discovered that the traditional cure for sleeplessness, believed to date from the 19th century, does not work because it is just too boring to keep the mind off problems and concerns. In an experiment, 50 insomniacs were asked to try different techniques to see which helped them to fall asleep more quickly. One group imagined a relaxing, tranquil scene like a waterfall or a beach. The second tried counting sheep while a third were left to their own devices. VOX POP Views from the streets of London  QUICKVOTE How do you get to sleep?

INSOMNIA
Eric Skjoldbjaerg (1997)
Personified so fittingly by lead actor Stellan Skarsgard , Swedish police investigator, Jonas Engstrom is the pivoting character from whom the psychological effects of killing emanate unto a world of Insomnia . Solicited by the Norwegian police, who expect him to unveil the mystery behind the murder of a young schoolgirl, Jonas' renowned genius in crime-solving seems to degenerate after commiting a fatal error which costs him the life of his partner, Erik Vik ( Sverre Anker Ousdal ). This sudden confrontation with death, added to the anguish of a paranoia let loose, leaves the character with just enough sagacity that may earn him his ticket back home. Norwegian director Eric Skjoldbjaerg plays with the notion of a new "film blanc " (as opposed to film noir), as he defines a new style in terms of the use of excess light (as opposed to the low-key lighting characteristic of the urban American, post WWII genre). Insomnia is rich in visual metaphoric expression that seems to exteriorize the main character's interior sense of loneliness. Written by

"Insomnia," the new Al Pacino movie, is based on a 1997 Norwegian film of the same title. The most impressive thing about the American remake, other than Pacino's remarkable, Oscar-worthy performance, is that it retains the moody, edgy and very European feel that made the original so memorable. ...

Pacino and Williams are very good together. Their scenes work because Pacino's character, in regarding Williams, is forced to look at a mirror of his own self-deception. The two faces are a study in contrasts. ...
Lawrence Toppman The Charlotte Observer How often can you say a remake is better than the original, especially a Hollywood remodeling of a quirky foreign film? And how often can you watch a favorite director Christopher Nolan of "Memento" and "Following" shift from small independent movies to the big-budget mainstream without selling out? "Insomnia" qualifies on both counts. ...
