What is Iritis? Iritis, also known as Uveitis, is the inflammation of the iris, the colored portion of the eye. It has been known to cause extreme pain, light sensitivity and sight loss, which is often the result of a disease in another part of the body. There are several articles that link the HLA-B27 gene to iritis as well as many other autoimmune diseases such as Ankylosing Spondylitis While iritis sometimes occurs only once, most cases are recurring. Once treated the attack will usually respond to various medications. However, the condition may become sight threatening when left untreated. Medication for iritis varies, treatment that works for one person will not always work with another.

What is iritis? The eye contains a structure called the iris, the color of which determines the color of oneÕs eyes. The iris consists of a relatively flat surface with a round opening in the middle called the pupil. The iris muscles, by contracting or relaxing, can change the size of the pupil to let more or less light into the eyes. When inflammation of the iris develops, this is termed iritis. What are the causes of iritis? Most often, the cause is not known. However, iritis may be associated with various forms of autoimmune arthritides, infections, and malignancies. How do I know if I have iritis? People who have iritis experience eye pain, sensitivity to light, and/or blurry vision. The eye may be red but without any discharge. The pupil may be small. Symptoms occur most frequently in one eye but can occasionally occur in both eyes. An eye physician (ophthalmologist) can tell if you have iritis by examining your eye. How is iritis treated?

In the majority of cases there is no specific cause. Occasionally, iritis is just one symptom of a disease that affects other organ systems: arthritis and spinal degenerative disease, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, lupus, and other collagen vascular diseases, bowel disturbances such as ulcerative colitis and regional enteritis, sarcoid. Some infections may cause iritis. Most often, however, iritis appears by itself.
The symptoms of iritis include light sensitivity, red eye, blurred vision, tearing, pain, and sometimes floaters . The pupil may appear small in the affected eye when compared to the normal pupil. Frequently iritis is a recurrent problem; after a few episodes patients become very astute at early diagnosis. Iritis is sometimes confused with conjunctivitis , a much less serious disorder of the clear outer lining of the eye.

By ANNE EISENBERG

For many people, working in front of a computer monitor means aching eyes, blurred
vision and even migraines. Eye and vision problems are fast overtaking sore wrists
and hands as one of the most frequently reported health-related complaints among the
ever-growing numbers of people who spend time peering at a computer screen.
"There is no disagreement among experts that we're seeing more and more
computer-related vision problems," said Dr. Kent M. Daum, an optometrist and professor at the University of Alabama School of Optometry in Birmingham who has written a number of papers on computer-related eye strain . "The eye isn't meant to close-focus all day. Doing so can lead to considerable problems." So quickly have computer-related vision issues grown in the past year that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration of the federal Department of Labor is considering incorporating these issues into the ergonomic guidelines that it is developing.

I ritis is the inflammation of the iris, the colored portion of the eye. Iritis, which is often the result of a disease in another part of the body, can be a recurring condition. A fairly common eye problem, iritis usually responds well to treatment. However, the condition may become sight threatening when left untreated. When left untreated iritis can cause a loss of sight.
Iritis, inflammation of the colored portion of the eye,
may cause a red eye or a small pupil. What is the iris?
The iris is a circular muscle near the front of the eye. Besides giving color to the eye, the iris controls the amount of light which enters the eye through the pupil. The iris is located behind the cornea (the clear protective layer of the eye) and just in front of the focusing lens. To see clearly, the proper amount of light must enter the eye. Just as the shutter controls the amount of light which enters a camera, the iris regulates the amount of light which enters the eye. The iris contains two muscles which control the size of the pupil opening. When too much light is present, the muscles cause the pupil to become smaller to reduce excessive light and glare. In dim light or at night, the muscles make the pupil larger to increase the amount of light entering the eye.

The symptoms of iritis can arise within a few hours or a few days .

Overview Iritis is an inflammatory problem of the iris , the colored part of the eye. It often occurs for unknown reasons, but it may be linked to certain diseases affecting the body, infections, previous eye surgery, or injury. Iritis may affect one or both eyes. It is sometimes a chronic, recurring condition.
Signs and Symptoms
  • Red eye Light sensitivity Pain that may range from aching or soreness to intense discomfort Small pupil Tearing

Detection and Diagnosis
The doctor can detect iritis during an examination of the eye with a slit lamp microscope . Among other things, the doctor will look for microscopic white cells floating inside the eye which are a sign of inflammation. The doctor will also carefully examine inside the eye to determine if other parts of the eye are involved.
Treatment
Steroids and anti-inflammatory drops are prescribed to reduce inflammation in the eye. Dilating drops also make the eye more comfortable by relaxing the muscle that constricts the
