How is iritis diagnosed and treated?
Iritis is an inflammation of the iris, the colored part of the eye that controls the size of the pupil opening ( See Anatomy of the Eye ). The condition is relatively common and responds well to treatment, but it can be sight-threatening if left untreated. It is not uncommon for patients to have multiple episodes of iritis even with prompt, proper treatment. Usually, only one eye is affected at any one time, but the condition can occasionally occur in both eyes. The iris, which contains two muscles, controls the size of the pupil opening. In dim light or at night, the iris makes the pupil larger to increase the amount of light entering the eye. When too much light is present, the iris causes the pupil to become smaller to reduce excessive light and glare.
When does iritis occur?
Most often, the cause of iritis is unknown, although it can be associated with other inflammatory conditions of the body such as arthritis. Infection of some parts of the body especially the tonsils, sinuses, kidney, gallbladder, and teeth can also cause inflammation of the iris. On occasion, iritis can occur following an eye injury or can accompany an ulcer or foreign body on the cornea.

Iritis is inflammation of the iris, and may be associated with inflammation of the rest of the choroid, a condition called uveitis. Since the iris is inside the eye, unlike the conjunctiva, inflammation affects vision, because there are white blood cells in the anterior chamber, and the pupil cannot react properly. It is very rare in childhood, but may affect adolescents. It may be associated with other conditions, and needs specialist assessment. return to eye disorders

Uveitis
Definition: An inflammation of the uveal tract which includes the iris ciliary body , and the choroid of the eye.
Alternative Names: Iritis; Pars planitis; Chroiditis; Chorioretinitis; Anterior uveitis; Posterior uveitis
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: Uveitis affects the uvea , the layer between the sclera and the retina , which also includes the iris , the ciliary body , and the choroid . The uvea is very vascular and provides most of the blood supply to the retina. Causes of uveitis can include autoimmunity, infection, or toxin exposure. The cause often remains unknown.
The most common form of uveitis is anterior uveitis, which involves inflammation of the iris. This condition is often called "iritis." The inflammation may be associated with autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis or ankylosing spondylitis , but most cases have no other diseases associated. The disorder may affect only one eye and is most common in young and middle-aged people. A history of an autoimmune disease is a risk factor. Pars planitis is inflammation of the pars plana, a narrow area of the choroid in between the iris and the choroid. This usually occurs in young men and is not associated with any other disease. It is usually mild in severity.

Dianne, Iritis, Seeing Beyond Our Color Spectrum
For the past several months, my friend, Dianne Laramee has been has been dealing with the eye disease Iritis - an inflammation of the iris and the ciliary muscle (the ring of colored tissue surrounding the pupil of the eye). Iritis comes from an infection in another part of the body. What she has found amazing during this time is that she an increased ability to see color frequencies around people - their auric fields. Dianne sees an array of color spectrums which includes colors beyond our normal visual spectrum. They are shades of blue - gold. The gold physically looks like a golden grid. When the person is thinking about something - or processing higher information - Dianne sees an interdimensional thread coming straight down into their crown chakra. Around the golden thread she sees 'golden orbs' that spin around the thread which is made of electro-magnetic energies. The orbs spin clockwise. Sometimes that appear to 'bounce'. (This is similar to what Mimi sees when she looks through the inter-dimensional gates on her property). After the person states that they have the information the light at the end of the thread becomes visible. The end of the thread seems to seal or merge together with the light. Once it is sealed you often see the color midnight blue.

Iritis
Signs, symptoms and indicators
Contributing risk factors Iritis is a condition where the iris becomes inflamed. Generally, only one side is affected and the pupil on that side is sometimes smaller. Typically, the eye is not sticky, crusty or producing a discharge. Iritis is a potentially serious condition requiring medical attention by an ophthalmologist. Fortunately, it rarely causes blindness but it can affect vision while the inflammation is present.
Symptoms - Head - Eyes/Ocular Unilateral/bilateral eye pain Although it is more common for just one eye to be affected during an attack of iritis, both eyes may be affected at the same time. There are several symptoms of iritis which are fairly specific to it, one being 'contralateral photosensitivity'. This means that the eye with iritis will feel pain even if light is shined into the OTHER eye only.
Vision disturbances
(High) sensitivity to bright light
Moist eyes
Bloodshot eyes

Risk factors for Iritis: Autoimmune Ankylosing Spondylitis The eye is the most common organ affected by ankylosing spondylitis . Iritis occurs from time to time in one-fourth of those with the condition.
