Elsewhere on the Web Information from your Family Doctor Jock Itch on DermNet Jock Itch from NIH Jock itch, also known as tinea cruris, is a fungal infection of the skin in the groin. The warm, moist environment is the perfect place for the fungus to grow. Anything that enhances that environment puts the person at risk of getting jock itch. Therefore, wearing sweaty, wet clothing in the summer time or wearing several layers of clothing in the wintertime causes an increased incidence of jock itch. Men are affected more often than women. The Jock Itch Fungus The fungus that most commonly causes jock itch is called Trichophyton rubrum . It also causes fungal infections of the toes and body. Under the microscope, this fungus looks like translucent, branching, rod-shaped filaments or hyphae. The width of the hyphae is uniform throughout which helps distinguish it from hair, which tapers at the end. Some hyphae appear to have bubbles within their walls, also distinguishing them from hair. Under most conditions these fungi inhabit only dead skin cells or the very top layer of skin.

Tinea cruris (also called ringworm of the groin) is a skin disorder that occurs almost exclusively in adult men. It can sometimes accompany athlete's foot tinea pedis ) and other tinea infections. The fungi that cause tinea infections, such as jock itch, thrive in warm, moist areas. Susceptibility to tinea infection is increased by friction, poor hygiene, prolonged moist skin, and minor skin or nail injuries.
The body normally hosts a variety of microorganisms, including bacteria, mold-like fungi (dermatophytes) and yeast-like fungi (such as Candida). Some of these are useful to the body. Others can multiply rapidly and form infections.

Tinea cruris, or "jock itch", is a superficial fungus infection of the groin and upper inner thighs which most commonly starts in hot humid weather. It is caused by common fungus organisms that grow easily in warm, moist areas of the skin. A rash appears which is red to tan or brown in color, slightly scaly, and usually has a fairly sharp and distinct margin. There may be central clearing. It usually does not affect the scrotum and penis. Not every groin rash is due to fungal infection. Intertrigo (mechanical rubbing, and moisture), psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, candidal (yeast) infections, and several other skin diseases can mimic fungal infections of the groin.

Jock Itch
(tinea cruris) BASICS
Jock itch is a fungal infection that typically causes raised, red, extremely itchy, sharply defined lesions on the groin and may extend into the buttocks, inner thigh and external genitalia. Because they need heat and moisture to grow, fungal infections are commonly found in areas where skin folds, but may be found on any part of the body. Warm weather and tight clothing (which hold moisture and sweat) encourage fungal growth. A fungal infection may be found on another part of the body and be referred to by another name such as ringworm. (Don't worry, there are not worms involved; the name came about before scientists were able to identify the true source of infection.) Diagnosis of a fungal infection is made by a health care provider and may involve taking a skin scraping for microscopic examination or culture. Other conditions may look similar to a fungal infection. If you decide to self diagnose and treat, seek medical attention if there is no improvement within one or two weeks, or if the condition worsens. Transmission may occur by direct contact, (transfer by touch of one infected area to another, either on yourself, another person, or even a dog or cat) or by direct contact with a contaminated article, such as towels or bed linen.

Question Posted By: markh on Saturday, March 31, 2001
Hello. I have had a condition that has been diagnosed repeatedly as jock itch, yet I am still unable to cure it and I wondering if you could help.
I originally got the disease in around June of last year. I used various over the counter creams which would help temporarily, but they would not completley get rid of the infection.
I then went to various doctors and used many prescription cream. I used econozole nitrate, clorimitazole, miconozale, fuicidin(an antiobiotic), and terbinafine. The terbinafine worked best, but it still did not clear up the problem so I began using the terbinafine pills. I have taken them for almost 4 weeks now and although the disease is better it still there. I am wondering what your advice is in this situation. Is it possible that since I have had the infection for so long that maybe I need to take the terbinafine pills for longer. Is there another oral antifungal that might work better? Is it possible that it is not a fungal infection at all. Maybe it will help if I briefly describe the infection. It is mostly on my testicles. There are no raised bumps on the testicles, it is just red and itchy. I also get little red dots on my inner thighs and in other parts of my legs which are also itchy. Any help you could give would be very much appreciated.

Jock Itch
Tinea cruris, known as "jock itch" or "jock rot," is a fungal infection caused by wearing clothes that are too tight or do not let air circulate. It usually occurs in damp, dark areas such as folds of the skin, especially in people who are overweight or if you sweat a lot from hot, humid weather or while exercising. It causes burning, redness, soreness, and itching on the genitals and the inside of the thighs.
Rubbing cornstarch on the affected area helps but sometimes a prescribed medication might be needed. Other things you can do include keeping the area clean and dry, washing your clothes frequently, and avoiding tight-fitting clothes. Don't try to wash it away - you might make it worse. You can buy over-the-counter medications for jock itch. These medications should contain the ingredient miconazole.

Message Board Top100 Sites ... Prostate Health Jock Itch You can get itchy, uncomfortable jock itch whether you're an athlete or not. This fungal infection, known as Tinea Cruris, is similar to athlete's foot. Learning about this fungal infection can help you prevent it, and get quick, effective treatment for it.
Causes And Symptoms
Jock itch is caused by a tiny fungus which grows best in dark, damp conditions. It's a common fungus which often infects men who perspire heavily or are obese. It can be transmitted to your groin from your feet. You probably know the symptoms: chafed, itchy, or irritated skin in the groin, inner thighs, pubic or anal areas. You may have it at the same time you have athlete's foot. It usually happens when you've been perspiring heavily, during sports or hot, humid weather.
Prevention
To prevent jock itch, avoid synthetic fabrics. Wear loose cotton to let perspiration evaporate and skin breathe. Never use anyone else's towels or clothes. The fungus which causes jock itch can be spread easily between men. Avoid rough textured clothing. An alkaline environment encourages the fungus to grow. Since most soap is alkaline (the opposite of acid), too much scrubbing with soap will make jock itch worse. Wash, but make sure to rinse all soap off your skin. Then dry well and keep the area as dry as possible. Talcum powder reduces wetness and chafing.
Treatment
If you get jock itch, there are many over-the-counter medications which can treat it quickly. Most effective are preparations containing miconozale. Jock itch can get worse if you bathe too often or use more treatment than recommended. Do not use medications recommended only for athlete's foot, since they may be too strong for the sensitive groin skin.
