Kluver-Bucy Syndrome
Definition: Kluver-Bucy syndrome is a rare medical condition that results from damage to the temporal lobes of the brain. This could lead to alterations in vision, hearing, language, memory.
Causes: Kluver-Bucy syndrome is the result of damage to the brain. It can also be caused by brain diseases including a form of herpes that infects the brain.
Characteristics: Major symptoms may include an urge to put all kinds of objects into the mouth, memory loss, extreme sexual behavior including excessive masturbation with homosexual tendencies, indifference, an almost uncontrollable appetite for food - sometimes leading to bulimia, and visual distractibility. Dementia may be present as well including loss of fear. The individual may be unable to learn new skills. The person may often appear irritable and have a general mistrust of others at times while others times he is very cheerful.
Approaches to Intervention: Due to the variations in the characteristics and their severity among individuals, each case needs to be separately examined. Development of a strict behavior plan will allow family and caregivers to keep consistent records of behaviors with reinforcers and guidelines for what is acceptable. In general, the individual should be constantly monitored to prevent choking or eating others' food or inedible objects. The environment should be cleared of all small objects that the individual could place in her mouth. A dietitian can help plan mealtime diet, sensible snacks, and monitor weight. Public sexual activity needs to be stopped. Medications may help to bring emotional behaviors under control.

Promiscuous Sexual Behavior as Extended Phenotype of HIV
by Jim Bowery

As with rabies, it appears some sexually transmitted diseases have evolved the ability to alter the amygdala of their victims so as to facilitate their transmission. In the case of rabies, the amygdala alterations generate aggressive behavior, matching the mode of transmission of the virus which tends to be via bites. Sexually transmitted diseases should produce different changes in the amygdala enhancing, not aggressive, but rather sexual behavior. Here is evidence that increased indiscriminate sexual behavior is an extended phenotype of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus affected by amygdalar damage in the infected population: Kluver-Bucy syndrome is described below as involving: "a profound reduction in the animals aggression and fear, a hypoemotionality, a tendency to over react to any visual stimulus, hypersexuality and an excessive oral tendency (i.e. mouthing any objects). The monkeys also tended to eat meat and feces." Note further that " destruction of the amygdala alone was sufficient enough to produce the symptoms of the Kluver-Bucy syndrome."

    The Kluver-Bucy Syndrome
    I. Góscinski, S. Kwiatkowski, J. Polak, and M. Orlowiejska Summary : Evolution of psychological disorders following head injury including memory and other cognitive disorders are common. The best known are psychiatric disturbances of various kinds after lesions of the frontal lobes.Cognitive, behavioural and emotional disorders are not usually seen in patients with bilateral temporal lesions. In our Department of Neurotraumatology we have observed 4 patients with posttraumatic lesions localized bitemporally. They developed Kluver-Bucy syndrome - rarity in human pathology - combined with three or more of the following symptoms and signs: increased oral activity, hypersexuality, hypermetamorphosis, memory disorders, placidity, loss of people recognition, bulimia.Several symptoms responded dramatically to carbamazepine. We conclude that it may be a useful agent in the treatment of this unusual syndrome. Keywords: Kluver-Bucy syndrome; organic mental disorders; temporal lobe injuries; carbamazepine.

    What causes the Kluver-Bucy syndrome?
    What are its symptoms?
i think I might have it.
    Responses:
    Emergency Medical Hologram

That would be quite a trick, since that syndrome has only really been seen in experimental monkeys. If part of the temporal lobes are removed the monkey cannot recognize objects (visual agnosia). These monkeys exhibit bizarre oral behaviors such as sticking things in their mouths that normal monkeys would have nothing to do with. They also become hyperactive and hypersexual making physical contact with almost anything in their environment.
Emergency Medical Hologram So unless you've recently had someone fooling around inside your skull, you'll need another excuse for when you're groping young coeds. Back to Archive Index

    Syndrome of the Week
    Kluver-Bucy Syndrome
: A disorder caused by damage to the amygdala, the region of the brain most identified as controlling instinctual behavior such as eating, fight or flight, and the sex-drive. Individuals with Kluver-Bucy are unable to discriminate between targets for their instincts. They will thus attempt to inappropriately have intercourse with anything: objects, animals, people, and will attempt to place multiple objects in their mouths. Individuals also appear to be unable to recognize the functional use of objects or to recognize familiar objects. The above link also references several other interesting disorders for your amusement.
