Laryngitis
Q:
I’ve heard that some possible causes of laryngitis include cheering at sporting events or allergies. What can I do to heal laryngitis?
A: Laryngitis is a process involving inflammation in the larynx or voice box. The larynx is located in the upper portion of the trachea, the tube through which air passes before reaching the lungs. It is the passage of air during exhalation across the vocal cords located in the larynx that is responsible for one’s ability to vocalize. Hoarseness is the main symptom occurring during laryngitis and is usually due to swelling in the vocal cords due to a variety of causes. Cheering or yelling loudly for a prolonged period of time can cause this problem and is best cured by voice rest, i.e. not talking. Seasonal allergies and the attendant post-nasal drip some experience can also contribute to this problem. Antihistamines and humidified air is helpful to many. The inhalation of toxic gasses can also inflame the larynx. For this reason if you work with solvents or other aerosolized agents, a respirator or other similar mask is a must. Sadly the most common toxic gas inhaled on a large scale is tobacco. Short term exposure is generally not harmful and yet the fact that smoking is the number one cause of cancers of the head of the head and neck is too often forgotten. For this reason, any episode of hoarseness lasting for longer than two or three weeks deserves attention as cancers can present as a nodule easily seen on one’s vocal cords. Direct laryngoscopy is a simple and well-tolerated procedure that allows direct visualization of the vocal cords to determine whether an abnormality exists.

What is Laryngitis? Laryngitis is an inflammation in the vocal cords in the larynx, has many causes. The larnyx is the organ of voice in mammals. It is commonly known as the voice box. Laryngitis is rarely serious. It usually last less than 7 days. The larynx is a tubular chamber about 2 inches (5 cm) high. It consists of walls of cartilage bound by ligaments and membranes, and moved by muscles. Symptoms The most common symptoms of Laryngitis are: weak, hoarse, gravely voice; sore throat, often fever , dry cough, a tickling in the back of the throat, and difficulty swallowing. What Causes Laryngitis?

  • An unnatural change in your voice Hoarseness Loss of your voice Tickling, scratchiness, and rawness in your throat A constant urge to clear your throat Fever, general feeling of lethargy and tiredness, and difficulty breathing mark more severe cases
What Causes It? Viruses or bacteria infect the larynx, or voice box, and cause it to swell. That produces irritation and soreness, and changes the voice, making you sound hoarse and unable to speak above a whisper, or even causing you to lose your voice entirely for a few days. Often, the virus comes from another ailment, such as a cold, the flu, or bronchitis. Overuse of your voice, by screaming or shouting for long periods, can worsen the irritation and swelling produced by the infection. Smokers and people who work around fumes to which they are allergic often have chronic laryngitis. What to Expect at Your Provider's Office Your health care provider will examine your throat and take a culture if it looks red. Your provider will also use a device that looks like a dentist's mirror to examine your throat and larynx. This procedure, called indirect laryngoscopy, enables him or her to check for swelling.

Home Up Tornado Baby Sleeping Driver ... Keys in Trunk [ Laryngitis ] Marriage Choice Student Missionaries Secret Desires Instant Job ... Story Index Laryngitis at Concert Time After claiming God's promises to supply all our needs, we went ahead in faith and stood up to sing when it was our time in the program. It took courage to open my mouth in the solo parts and believe that a smooth sweet sound would come out. I prayed that God would be glorified and no attention would be drawn to myself. (Which it definitely would have if a hoarse sound had come out.) Perhaps my guardian angel sang in my stead but the right music and notes were heard and the messages touched many hearts. Many knew that I could only whisper and they stood in shock, wanting to talk to me afterwards to hear just how bad I sounded. God was given all the glory for after singing, there was no sound from my vocal cords. God had honored my prayer requesting that He help me witness. I was totally unable to share without HIS POWER. When facing the impossible tasks now, thirty years later, I remember how I took God at His word and in faith stepped forward to do what looked impossible, and God showed HIS POWER. We limit God today if we are afraid of making a fool of ourselves and doubt His power. If our motive is to bless others

The voice box (larynx) is located at the top of the airway to the lungs (windpipe, trachea) and contains the vocal cords. When they become inflamed or infected, they swell. This can cause hoarseness , and may occasionally cause obstruction of the airway.
The most common form of laryngitis is an infectious illness usually caused by a virus which results in hoarseness. Laryngitis
Laryngitis is an inflammation or infection of your voice box and surrounding area. There are two forms of laryngitis, acute and chronic. Acute laryngitis - commonly caused by a virus or occasionally by a bacterial infection - occurs suddenly and does not last long. Chronic laryngitis, which can be caused by smoking, voice overuse, violent coughing, or exposure to chemical irritants, can last for a longer period of time. Symptoms for both acute and chronic laryngitis include:
  • a hoarse voice
  • dry cough
  • weakening voice as the day progresses
  • scratchy throat
Treatment is aimed at soothing the infection with voice rest. Antibiotics or steroids may also be prescribed. Drinking plenty of fluids, such as water, or herbal tea, is also important. A humidifier may help relieve your scratchy, sore throat. For chronic laryngitis, smoking will only aggravate your situation.
