Personal Note : I feel uncomfortable not acknowledging the upsetting events in the world. I find it necessary, however, to go on with this part of my life even as I work for peace and hope that my friends in the military return home safely and soon. Richard Wanderman We're always thinking and rethinking the organization of information at this web site. The wonderful thing about a web site is that change is relatively easy compared to something in print or even burned on a CD. Essays and articles on various aspects of learning disabilities written by a variety of people remain the heart of this web site. We've also continued to add to and refine our resource lists of schools, tools, and more. Our long-term plan is to move all resource list entries into databases to make it easier to find a school in New Jersey or an educational consultant in Alaska.
Discussion
We've consolidated the forums in our Discussion area and added, as an experiment, a new category called Weblogs or "blogs" to allow individuals to post new information in their own forums and on their own web pages.

Learning Disabilities (LD) and Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)
What is a learning disability?
LD is a disorder that affects people's ability to either interpret what they see and hear or to link information from different parts of the brain. These limitations can show up in many ways: as specific difficulties with spoken and written language, coordination, self control, or attention. Such difficulties extend to schoolwork and can impede learning to read, write, or do math. For more general information on learning disabilities, please visit LD In-General in our LD In-Depth section.
[Source: National Institutes of Health, 1993] What are the types of learning disabilities? LD is a broad term that covers a pool of possible causes, symptoms, treatments, and outcomes. Because of this it is difficult to diagnose or to pinpoint the causes. Learning Disabilities can be divided up into three broad categories. These types of learning disabilities include:

Abstract Many people have difficulty comprehending that a child can be gifted and also have learning disabilities. As a result, children with special needs that result from both their high abilities and their learning problems are rarely identified and are often poorly served. This article explores the current policies and practices with regard to defining, identifying, and educating this population. Recommendations are included that would help ensure that students who are gifted and have learning disabilities receive the intervention needed to help them achieve their full potential. When educators first began describing children who showed evidence of having a learning disability (LD) yet also appeared to be gifted, many viewed this as contradictory. The stereotype that had prevailed since Terman's (1925) time was that gifted children score uniformly high on intelligence tests and perform well in school. How could a child be considered gifted who has serious enough learning problems to be characterized as having a learning disability? In recent years, the concept of giftedness and learning disabilities occurring concomitantly in the same individual has become commonly accepted. Several books have been written on the subject, numerous articles have appeared in journals, and most educational conferences focusing on either learning disabilities or giftedness include at least one presentation on the dual exceptionality. We appear to have reached an understanding that high ability and learning problems can both be present in the same individual. Nonetheless, empirical research on the characteristics and needs of this population has been limited, and relatively few students with LD who are gifted are identified as such or given special services. In this review, we examine some of the theoretical arguments, regulations, and educational practices that affect students with LD who are gifted.

Welcome to Roads To Learning
Our goal is to encourage linkages among libraries, community organizations, and service providers to improve service to people with learning disabilities, their families, professionals, and other interested people. The initiative's goal is to bring information about learning disabilities to the general public through libraries while increasing libraries' capacity to serve their communities in this area.
The idea is to reach an ever-growing number of people and help improve library and information access for all. Otherwise the human and financial costs affect each one of us, even if we can't see them.
