Learning Disability Basics: Common Signs LD I.Q. Test
Early Warning Signs
The vast majority of children today (88%) are enrolled in school by age five. Approximately 15% of these children will experience more than the normal, periodic difficulties in school that all children face. They will, in fact, experience learning disabilities.
Early Intervention
Information is now available regarding early learning problems and the recognition of resk factors for learning disabilities and other delays in development as well as effective remedial strategies.
Early intervention can help prevent the extent to which children encounter difficulties later in school and can offset some of the long-term consequences associated with learning disabilities, such as school drop-out, juvenile delinquency, unemployment, illiteracy, substance abuse, and welfare dependency.
Early intervention can help individuals with learning disabilities to live to their full, undiminished potential, enjoying more productive and fulfilling participation in our society.
Learning Disabilities
Neurological in origin, learning disabilities impede a person's ability to store, process, or produce information. Learning disabilities can affect one's ability to read, write, speak, or compute math, and can impair social skills. Learning disabilities affect specific skills and abilities. A child who has difficulty with language, for example, may not have difficulties with any other area of development. Children with learning disabilities are of average or above average intelligence.

    What is LDA
On behalf of children with learning disabilities, in 1964, a group of concerned parents formed the Learning Disabilities Association. It is the only national organization devoted to defining and finding solutions for the broad spectrum of learning problems. LDA has 50 state affiliates with more than 775 local chapters. Membership totals are 60,000, including parents, professionals from many sectors, and concerned citizens.
    What are LDA's goals?
Learning disabilities occur in many forms - visual, auditory, motor control, communication, logic, etc. Effective correction must include a total approach to the educational, physiological, psychological and medical needs of the individual child. Therefore, LDA believes in an interdisciplinary approach with these major goals:
    • Encourage research in neuro-pnysiological and psychological aspects of learning disabilities
    • Stimulate development of early detection programs
    • Create a climate of public awareness and acceptance
    • Disseminate information widely
    • Provide advocacy information
    • Develop and promote legislative assistance
    • Improve regular and special education
    • Establish career opportunities

Vol. 1.No. 1 A-4 April 1994 Return to Table of Contents Return to Main Page A Guide to Learning Disabilities for the ESL Classroom Practitioner Christine Root
    Harvard University
    Abstract
It is estimated that in the United States 15% of the general population has a learning disability (Monarez 1992, p. F3). It is possible that many of the ESL students whom we view as poor language learners are struggling because they too have a learning disability. In many countries, learning disabilities are not recognized or, in some cases, they are recognized but not dealt with. This paper is meant to be a basic primer on learning disabilities. It will describe classroom behaviors associated with several common learning problems, the results of research into them and it will offer practical suggestions to classroom teachers for working more profitably with these students. According to Dr. Melvin Levine, Director of the Clinical Center for the Study of Development and Learning at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill: Learning Disability is the term currently used to describe a handicap that interferes with someones ability to store, process or produce information. Such disabilities affect both children and adults. The impairment can be quite subtle and go [-1-] undetected throughout life. But learning disabilities create a gap between a persons true capacity and his day to day production and performance. Its not always immediately obvious that a person has a learning disability. The most straightforward indication is academic failure or underachievement by someone who seems capable of more (Levine 1984, p.1).
