Just like the thousands of individuals who suffer from a blood-related cancer, who wake up and hope for a cure or remission, I wake up and hope that I can do one more thing to help them. Every mile I run, I run for them. I hope you will come back often and see how I am doing in my training and fundraising. If you have someone special I can run for, please let me know. I will list them on this site with you as their sponsor. I have joined a very special program, TEAM IN TRAINING, along with 26,000 other participants nationwide. We will run or walk a 26.2-mile marathon, cycle in a 100 mile century ride or complete an Olympic length triathlon. As members of TNT, we will train and compete on behalf of patients and we will raise funds to battle leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma. The Today, the Society supports the following major programs: research, patient services, public and professional education, advocacy and community services. With headquarters in White Plains, NY, the Society has chapter offices across the United States and is a single corporation doing business under New York State not-for-profit corporate laws. Nearly one million volunteers from all walks of life give generously of their time and talents to implement the Society's programs. They provide professional guidance and help raise vitally needed funds. The Society's activities are directed and supervised by its national and chapter boards of trustees.

Study: Arsenic found successful in treating leukemia
Terex Fimonari, 44, recieves an arsenic trioxide drip to treat acute promyelocytic leukemia.
November 7, 1998
Web posted at: 11:05 a.m. EST (1605 GMT) NEW YORK (CNN) A pilot study has found that a form of arsenic was able to stop leukemia in two-thirds of patients, causing only minimal side effects. The study, completed at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, administered the compound arsenic trioxide on 12 patients terminally-ill with a rare form of the disease called acute promyelocytic leukemia or APL. For eight of the patients, the disease went into full remission for up to 10 months. In APL, which strikes about 1, 500 people in the United States each year, cancerous cells grow out of control, crowding out white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets. "The arsenic induces this programed cell death as we call it, and these cells are then naturally eliminated by the body," said researcher

Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia (CML)
Leukemia is an uncontrolled proliferation of one kind of white blood cell (or leukocyte Like all cancers (probably), all the leukemic cells are descended from a single cell that lost the ability to maintain normal control over the cell cycle There are a number of types of leukemia, as you would expect from the number of types of white blood cells (5) and the number of stages they pass through as they mature. One of the most common is c hronic m yelogenous l eukemia (also known as chronic myeloid leukemia) or CML CML arises in a bone marrow stem cell that is the precursor to the granulocytes and megakaryocytes. Therefore, CML patients often have high numbers of platelets as well as of granulocytes (especially neutrophils and basophils). Link to discussion of the formation of blood cells. As the name suggests, the disease often exists for years with only moderately elevated numbers of leukemic cells and few symptoms. At some point, however, the patient goes through a "crisis" when the leukemic cells are produced in vast numbers.
The Philadelphia Chromosome (Ph
In most cases of CML , the leukemic cells share a chromosome abnormality not found in any nonleukemic white blood cells, nor in any other cells of the patient's body. This abnormality is a reciprocal
