Importance
Head lice (Pediculus humanus capitis) feed on blood, primarily on the heads of children. Infestation by head lice is called pediculosis. Fortunately, they do not transmit disease, although their presence can be very bothersome. These lice inject a saliva into their hosts as they feed to prevent the blood from clotting. This results in itching which at best is annoying and at worst can result in infection if scratched too vigorously. Anyone can become infested; the presence of head lice is not the result of unclean conditions.
Identification
Photo by Department of Entomology Adult head lice are about 1/8 inch long, grayish, flattened, and wingless. Their legs are claw-like, designed to hold onto hair. These lice excrete partially digested blood which can appear as 'black dandruff'. Lice eggs, commonly referred to as nits, are whitish, oval and the size of a pinhead (1/30 inch long). They are attached to hair near the scalp. Nits that are found further than 1/2 inch from the scalp nearly always have hatched or died.
Biology
Head lice live in very close association with humans, especially on young children. They are found on heads where they take daily blood meals. Head lice cling to hair shafts near the scalp. Adult females glue eggs on hair shafts close to the scalp, usually behind the ears and on the nape of the neck. Eggs hatch after 5 to 10 days. Young head lice (called nymphs) are mobile and molt three times, developing into mature adults in about three weeks. Adults can live for about four weeks but do not lay eggs until after seven days. Head lice do not survive off a host for more than one or two days.

Facts Head lice are small, six-legged wingless insects, pin-head size when they hatch, less than match-head size when fully grown and grey/brown in colour. They are difficult to detect in dry hair even when the head is closely inspected. They very often cause itching, but this is not always the case, particularly when recently arrived on the head.
Head lice cannot fly, jump or swim, but spread by clambering from head to head. Anyone with hair can catch them, but children who have head to head contact, either at school or during play, are most commonly affected.
Head lice feed by biting and sucking blood through the scalp of their host. The female louse lays eggs in sacs (nits) which are very small, dull in colour, and well camouflaged. These are securely glued to hairs where the warmth of the scalp will hatch them out in 7-10 days. Empty egg sacs are white and shiny and may be found further along the hair shaft as the hair grows out. Lice take 6-14 days to become fully grown, after which they are capable of reproduction.

What are head lice and nits?
Head lice are very small insects which live on the scalp of human beings. They are few millimetres in length and are a light brown colour. They don't live on animals.
The lice feed by sucking blood from your scalp. They lay eggs, called nits , which they stick to the shafts of your hair with a very strong glue. The eggs are dull grey, and are fastened to the hair very close to the scalp, so they are kept nice and warm. After about 7 days, the eggs hatch, and new lice are released. Two weeks later, the new lice are fully grown, and start laying eggs. Very soon hundreds of lice can be living on your scalp. Hatched eggs remain attached to your hair for some time. The hatched egg is white, and can be seen as a small white blob stuck to a hair, about an inch away from the scalp.

THE LIFE CYCLE
The female head louse lives for about 14 to 20 days, laying about 200 eggs in a lifetime. The female louse lays eggs (known as nits) on the hair shaft itself, as close to the scalp as possible. The eggs are attached to the hair with a cement like bond that allows the nits to adhere to the hair shaft despite regular combing and washing. The eggs normally hatch in 7 to 10 days. Following its birth, the louse must obtain a blood meal from the host within 24 hours or it will not survive. The louse matures sexually in 7 to 10 days, meets a louse of the opposite sex and the cycle begins all over again. This is why mechanical removal of the nits is critical in treating head lice.
  • Head lice are small, wingless insects that feed on human blood and need human blood to survive. They are crawling insects. They cannot hop, jump or fly. Head lice are clear in color when hatched and develop a reddish-brown color after feeding. Nits (the eggs of the head louse) are oval shaped and grayish-white in color. They can be found attached to the hair shaft at an angle.

http://quickcare.org/skin/lice.html
Few skin conditions are as horrifying to people as lice or scabies infestations. Though billions of microscopic bacteria, viruses, and fungi swarm over us constantly, the thought of actual visible bugs crawling on our skin and hair makes us shudder. Scabies and lice are different, but each infests us in similar ways. See the body map for classic locations. Lice There are three types of lice - head lice, pubic (crab) lice, and body lice. They are all transmitted in the exact same way: close body contact with an infested person, or contact with shared items like clothing, bedding, combs and brushes, and yes, even toilet seats can pass these creatures onto you. They do not jump from person to person though. Lice bite the skin to feed on your blood, and this is what causes the characteristic itching. Head lice Pubic (crab) lice : They do have a crab-like appearance, and are slightly larger than head lice. Many people think they are specs of dirt - until they move! Crab lice are found in other hairy areas, too: underarms, eyebrows and lashes, and facial hair. Body lice Scabies For treatment of lice, take care to read label warnings and instructions carefully. The regimen of applying the medicine, washing it off, and removing nits must be followed

Health information discussing pubic lice, crabshaped insects, which attach themselvesto human hairs. Infection is common and found worldwide. Pubic lice.
http://www.mckinley.uiuc.edu/health-info/dis-cond/commdis/pubiclic.html
Pubic Lice WHAT IS IT?
Pubic lice, commonly referred to as "crabs" are small, crab-shaped insects (Pthirus pubis), which attach themselves to human hairs. Crabs usually live in the pubic hair but can sometimes be found in axillary or armpit hair, facial hair, or even eyelashes. Infection is common and found worldwide. WHAT CAUSES IT?
Pubic lice occur when adult lice lay eggs, called nits, on the hair shaft close to the skin. The egg, which is white to yellow and oval shaped, requires 7-10 days to hatch into a nymph. Nymphs and adult lice feed on human blood. WHAT ARE ITS COMMON SYMPTOMS?
It is possible to be infested with pubic lice and have no symptoms. More commonly, itching occurs, which worsens at night. Pubic lice are difficult to see because of their location and appearance. Grayish-white lice blend in with white skin and brown lice can be mistaken for moles or can be hard to see on black skin. A rash or faint bluish spots might be noted at the site of bites. If lice infest the eyebrows or eyelashes, the eyes may become inflamed. HOW IS IT TRANSMITTED?
