Head Lice Head lice infection, also known as pediculosis, is very common and can occur at any age, to either sex and is not limited to the poor or certain racial or ethnic groups. Learn how to recognize head lice infestation, how to treat it, and how to prevent it from coming back. WHAT ARE HEAD LICE?
These tiny parasitic insects (Pediculosis capitis) live in human hair (not on pets) and require human blood for survival. They hatch from small eggs called nits, which are attached to the base of individual hairs. The nits hatch into nymphs in about 7-10 days. Nymphs reach maturity in another 7-10 days. The adult louse is about the size of a sesame seed with six legs and a color range from off-white to reddish-tan. The female louse can live up to 30 days, laying as many as six eggs a day. Lice can only crawl, they cannot jump or fly. HOW DOES SOMEONE GET HEAD LICE?
The most common form of transmission is direct contact with someone infested with head lice. Transmission may also occur by borrowing and using an infected person's a comb or brush, hats, ribbons, scarves or other head coverings. You can also get head lice by sharing towels or pillowcases, or lying on a bed, couch or carpet that has recently been in contact with a person's head infested with lice. Human Lice
Only three of the 200 known species of sucking lice
infest humans. They are the head louse, the body louse
and the crab or pubic louse. Sucking lice are
ectoparasites which feed on the blood of their host. They
are flattened dorso-ventrally and their legs are adapted
for clinging to the body hairs of their hosts.
The life cycles of the three human lice are very
similar. The "nits" (eggs) are cemented to hairs (Crab
and head lice) or to fibers and seams of clothing (body
louse). The eggs hatch in 8 to 10 days (at 80-85 degrees F). Eggs fail to hatch if they are exposed to temperatures lower than 70 degrees F for 7 to 9 days. The louse nymphs (immature) feed on the blood of their host and molt three times before developing into sexually mature adults. After mating, the females begin to deposit small numbers of eggs each day for 20 to 30 days. A female crab louse deposits a total of about 30 nits. Head lice deposit 50-100 nits and body lice deposit 275-300 nits. The entire life cycle requires 21 to 27 days, and

It is a relatively uneventful school day which is abruptly interrupted by the arrival of the "nit nurse". As a result of the information sent home, painful parental probing of heads follows, together with contagious and synchronised scratching. As the fine toothed combs are dragged through the hair of complaining and recalcitrant children, vile smelling shampoo is put into action, very often on a "just in case" basis.

Diagnosing Head Lice
I think my child has head lice. I keep my house clean, but I'm embarrassed and afraid other people will think it's my fault. How can I check without going to the doctor?

Lice have been a nuisance to humans since ancient times. They have thrived almost wherever humans have been in prolonged close contact with each other. One notable exception to this has been in areas where the pesticide DDT is in widespread use. In the United States, for a period of about 30 years, lice outbreaks were uncommon. Since DDT was banned in 1973, the number of cases of lice has risen steadily. Today, there are about 12 million cases per year in the United States alone. Each year, many day care centers , schools, neighborhoods, extended families, and small family units face problems with lice. You are not alone.

Head lice are a widespread and sometimes unpleasant infection, especially among school-age children. A common misconception is that they are a symptom of poor hair hygiene - rest assured this is not true. Lice are equally likely to be found on clean or dirty hair!
Contrary to popular belief, head lice cannot jump, hop or fly, but are spread by sustained, direct, head to head contact. Children often get head lice from close contact when playing together, whispering, hugging or when they are in close contact with an infected adult. The truth is that anyone can get head lice - not just children. Read on if you're looking for more information on effective ways to detect and

Educational Resource Guide #018 Head Lice Management
The incidence of head lice has increased in the last 20 years. This means that more kids are carrying around head lice and have the chance to expose even more kids to head lice. What can parents do that is safe and effective? This educational resource guide discusses how to detect head lice and the steps required to eliminate lice and prevent re-infestation. We will discuss insecticidal treatments, but will emphasize combing as the most important action that parents can do to eliminate head lice from their child’s head. Because of the limitations of insecticidal products, even after using head lice treatments, combing must be done to break the head lice life cycle. Background: H ead lice are found in children of all socioeconomic classes. They are very contagious and can spread easily. While there is no reason to panic (head lice do not carry serious diseases), taking action quickly is the best way to prevent the infestation of other family members. It is also important for parents to remain calm because they will need the cooperation of their child to successfully treat this problem.

BITING LICE
(Above) Menacanthus stramineus
(right)Egg of same species attached to feather Mallophaga - biting lice - are probably better thought of as chewing lice as they are not blood feeders. They feed on dead skin and fragments of hair or feathers. They are found on mammals and birds although the majority are found on birds. Eyes in Mallophaga are either absent or very reduced and the mandibles are developed for chewing. The order is divided into the suborders Amblycera and Ischnocera. The Amblycera are generally considered to be more primitive with hosts including birds, marsupials and mammals. Bird lice are characterized by having two tarsal claws on each leg whilst only one tarsal claw is present on lice of mammals. Amblycera feed on skin debris primarily although blood feeding may occur due to the rasping action of the mandibles. Ischnocera are usually referred to as feather or hair lice as they are adapted to cling onto these structures rather than the skin. Their diet consists of mostly keratin and in order for digestion to occur gut symbionts or specific enzymes are present. Eggs of both suborders are laid singularly and glued to the hosts hair or feathers. They are laid close to the skin as a higher temperature is maintained here. Eggs usually develop in approximately one to two weeks. Total development time from egg to adult therefore takes from three to five weeks. Adult lifespan has been reported to vary from one month to several months.

BOSTON, April 10, 1996 The National Pediculosis Association (NPA) today applauded the FDA's new recommended labeling changes for childhood lice treatments containing the pesticide lindane, a chemical identified as a hazardous substance by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry of the U.S. Department of Health and Health and Human Services. At the same time, the NPA continues to warn parents and pediatricians of the "grave" implications of using any lindane-based products citing a growing body of evidence that the product can cause serious and sometimes fatal conditions. "In its statement, the FDA advised that lindane be a treatment of last resort its own acknowledgment that this pesticide can carry serious risks," said NPA President Deborah Altschuler. "The reports we have been receiving indicate that these risks are more widespread than previously acknowledged, and that in certain cases, the adverse effects in lindane outweigh the risks of having lice. In particular, pregnant or nursing women should never be exposed to any of the lice pesticides, even as a last resort." The FDA has recommended labeling changes that encourage lindane's use only for patients who have either failed to respond to adequate doses, or are intolerant of, other approved therapies."Altschuler noted two of the problems that remain despite this recommendation:
