Treating Head Lice and Scabies
Head Lice
  • Infestation with head lice is widespread and most commonly occurs in children.
  • Physical evidence of living lice is necessary prior to the commencement of treatment.
  • Close contacts should be traced and if found to be infested treated at the same time.
  • There is no evidence that any one insecticide currently in use in the UK has a greater effect than another. Best choice will depend on local resistance patterns.
  • It is unclear whether physical methods such as wet combing are effective as a means of curing head lice infestations.
Scabies
  • While infestation with the scabies mite is not a life-threatening condition, the severe, persistent itch debilitates and depresses people.
  • There is a lack of good quality research on the effectiveness and comparative effectiveness of available treatments.
  • Health professionals treating scabies face considerable uncertainty as to the most effective and safe topical treatment for scabies.
  • Whilst permethrin appears to be the preferred treatment for scabies at the present time, this choice is based on small trials together with traditional reviews and professional opinion.

Introduction
Lice irritate cattle, causing the cattle to bite, scratch and rub. Lousy cattle may cause damage to fences, yards or trees which the cattle use as rubbing posts. The coats of lousy cattle take on a rough scruffy appearance, and, at times, areas of skin are rubbed raw. This will reduce hide value at slaughter and be inconsistent with on-farm quality assurance programs.

Welcome to the Lice Aren't Nice Community Coalition web site!
A collaborative venture between the Lice Aren't Nice Community Coalition and the Snohomish Health District, Everett, Washington.
When a person in your family gets head lice, your life can get a little crazy. Crazier than it is right now! But the more you know about lice prevention and treatment, the better off you and everyone else will be!
This site contains the most current information about head lice. It has been gathered by the Lice Aren't Nice Community Coalition (LANCC) and was reviewed by the Snohomish Health District. Because information about head lice treatments changes over time, the following recommendations have been based on treatments the LANCC found to be the most effective for the majority of our community at this time. There are no guarantees that these treatments will be 100% effective; data from clinical trials are not available for all treatment options on this web site. Introduction
"Lice are nature's scavengers. They live off the impurities in the blood."
THIS is a non-profit website.
Lice infestation is associated with nutritional deficiencies and associated toxins in the bloodstream.
Before you decide that this theory is too absurd to be contemplated, let me explain.
Head lice, body lice, crabs or "nits" are tiny insect parasites which live off the blood. They can be very resistant to treatment, prone to making comebacks and can drive people absolutely crazy trying to figure out a way to eliminate them.
Also these days, not only do we have super bugs resistant to antibiotics, but super lice which are becoming resistant to chemical treatments.
What can be done?
Conventional Treatment for Lice The conventional treatment is insecticides. The bulk of websites follow the same general theme the lifecycle of the louse (which is all very interesting but may or may not be accurate), correct laundering techniques, use of nit combs, strategic use of insecticides and follow up treatments etc. While this is all very well and good and undoubtedly has some effect on the little critters, a person can have their whole life totally taken over by these rituals without actually getting a lasting result.

Regardless of how well-groomed and clean your child is, he or she can get lice. Lice infestations spread at school, from toilet seats or from contact with someone who has them. Lice are spread from person to person. There are three types of lice: head lice, pubic lice (also called crabs) and body lice. The most common type of lice is head lice. All are attracted to body heat. They are flat, wingless "bugs" that feed on human blood. Bites from lice cause intense itching and red spots on the skin that look like mosquito bites. Adult lice are rarely seen. Female lice lay as many as six eggs a day. The eggs hatch in eight to 10 days, after which time the biting begins. TYPES OF LICE AND WHERE TO LOOK FOR THEM BODY LICE -These lice burrow under the skin. Hives and other abrasions are frequently caused from scratching them. They can usually be found in the seams of underwear.

Head Lice from a scientific viewpoint
Gerri Harvey, a school nurse in NH, has her own web page, Sch Nurse Perspectives, accessible from our link page . She sends teachers the following handout: The following points come from a publication by an entomologist, John F. Burger, from the University of New Hampshire on "Head Lice". Some significant points in his document are:
    • One of the worst "problems" of head lice is adult attitudes.
    • Head lice is not a serious medical condition.
    • Over treatment with lice treatment shampoos is more serious than the head lice.
    • "Irrational" reactions to head lice can lead to fumigating classrooms, schools, buses, etc ..... this is expensive and unnecessary.
    • Much "information" about head lice is based on old, unproven information generated more than 80 years ago, some of it propagated by the companies who profit from the sale of lice shampoos and sprays.
    • Direct physical head to head contact is the usual method of transmission.
    • Transmission via clothing, hats, furniture, carpets, school bus seats and other objects is not likely because of the biology of head lice.
    • Lice are fragile, and the chances of being passed on hats and combs is unlikely.

Here's some information I read on webpages that I thought interesting: Lice can hold their breath for up to 30 minutes, that's why they don't drown when you wash your hair. Getting your hair permed will not kill the lice nor their eggs. Nits with living embryo's will glow under florescent light. An easy way to find the live nits compared to the empty ones. Lice will die within a few hours to a day (depending on which website you visit if they do not have a blood meal). Lice do not fly, swim, or jump. Lice prefer clean hair (so, now you know, you can't automatically say someone was dirty or filthy if they have head lice!) This page has a link on the SGM Causes page and it would be nice if you would check it out once your done searching about lice!
OK, below you will find some useful links on lice I found on the internet. There are so many! And, so many have conflicting information. The information I have included on my site are what worked for me. I didn't do any experiments or anything like that so I can't tell you what is right or wrong on someone elses page. http://www.astdhpphe.org/infect/lice.html
    Head Lice
    • Head lice are parasitic insects that live in the hair and scalp of humans. They need human blood to survive. Head lice are spread easily from person to person by direct contact. Head lice can infest anyone, regardless of personal hygiene. Head lice are usually treatable with lice-killing shampoos and creme rinses. To prevent infection: 1) avoid direct contact with the head, hair, clothing, or personal belongings of a person with head lice, and 2) treat affected persons, their contacts, and their households.
What are head lice? Head lice are parasitic insects that live in the hair and scalp of humans. The scientific name for head louse is Pediculus humanus capitis . Another name for infestation with head lice is pediculosis. Head lice develop in three forms: nits, nymphs, and adults. Nits: Nits are head lice eggs. They are hard to see and are often mistaken for dandruff or droplets of hairspray. Nits are found firmly attached to the hair shaft. They are oval and usually yellow to white. Nits take about 1 week to hatch. Nymphs: Nits hatch into nymphs. Nymphs are immature adult head lice. Nymphs mature into adults about 7 days after hatching. To live, nymphs must feed on blood.

Head lice are small, six-legged wingless insects, pinhead size when they hatch, less than match-head size when fully grown and grey or brown in colour. Female lice lay eggs in sacs which hatch in 7 to 10 days.
Lice are the insects that can be seen moving on, or close to, the scalp. Nits are the pearly white empty egg shells of head lice that are left stuck to hair shafts after the insects have hatched. Nits may still be found even after all the lice have been cleared, but you should not be start treatment unless you find living, moving lice.
Symptoms Lice are nearly early always completely harmless. They do not always cause itching, particularly when they have just arrived on the head. Causes Social status means nothing to lice. They are common among children and infection has nothing to do with dirty hair. Head lice cannot fly, jump or swim but are spread by clambering from head to head. Anyone with hair can catch them.
