He was a pupil and an assistant of John La Farge, and also studied in Paris, becoming a well-known portrait and flower painter. He became a member of the Society of American Artists (I 898), and of the Copley Society, Boston, and an associate of the National Academy of Design, New York. LOCKYER, SIR JOSEPH NORMAN (1836- ), English astronomer, was born at Rugby on the I7th of May 1836. After completing his education on the Continent of Europe, he obtained a clerkship in the War Office in 1857. His leisure was devoted to the study of astronomy, and he was appointed in 1870 secretary to the duke of Devonshire’s royal commission on science. In 1875 he was transferred to the Science and Art Department at South Kensington, and on the foundation of the Royal College of Science he became director of the solar physics observatory and professor of astronomical physics. Eight British government expeditions for observing total solar eclipses were conducted by him between 1870 and 1905. ATAXIA What is ataxia? Ataxia is a symptom, not a specific disease or diagnosis. Ataxia
means clumsiness, or loss of coordination. Ataxia may affect the
fingers and hands, the arms or legs, the body, speech or eye
movements. This loss of coordination may be caused by a number
of different medical or neurologic conditions; for this reason,
it is important that a person with ataxia seek medical attention
to determine the underlying cause of the symptom and to get the
appropriate treatment.
What causes ataxia? Most often, ataxia is caused by loss of function in the part of
the brain which serves as the "coordination center", which is the cerebellum. The cerebellum is located toward the back and lower part of the head. The right side of the cerebellum controls coordination on the right side of the body, and the left side controls coordination on the left. The central part of the cerebellum is involved in coordinating the very complex movements of gait, or walking. Other parts of the cerebellum help to

Locomotor Ataxia.
Synonyms Definition Syphilis bears a very important relation to tabes and is undoubtedly the most important of all predisposing causes. There is a history of syphilis in from seventy-five to ninety per cent of all tabetic cases. Thus Erb reports that eighty-nine per cent of three hundred cases in private practice, had a history of syphilis, while Mobius believes that tabes never exists without syphilis.
Taylor Among the more common exciting causes may be mentioned sexual excesses, great physical exertion, and exposure to wet and cold. It is more common in cities than in the country. Pathology In some cases, trophic changes are seen in the bones, especially their articular surfaces. Symptoms Pains They last only for a second or two and may be associated with a burning sensation. Occasionally herpes develops at the seat of pain. These attacks occur irregularly, and are apt to follow excesses, cold, and damp weather. In a few cases pain is absent. Paresthesia The girdle pain, or sense of constriction about some part of the trunk, is not uncommon.

Ataxic Paraplegia.
Synonym Definition Etiology Pathology Symptoms The reflexes are increased, the knee-jerk being exaggerated, and ankle clonus is present. Sensory symptoms, especially the lightning pains and crises, are absent, though a dull pain may be experienced in the sacral region. The Argyll-Robertson pupil is generally absent, and optic atrophy rarely ever occurs. The sphincters are not usually involved, though menstruation is sometimes difficult. The ataxia may extend to the upper extremities, and in some cases mental disturbance is pronounced. Diagnosis
