    Trawling the Web
Having found I was suffering from Lyme disease in 1997 I spent several hours trawling the web for as much information as I could find on the disease. I thought it might be useful to put a site together that linked all the most useful information that I have found. I have also been lucky enough to find some information specifically aimed at the UK, kindly provided by John Adams, Senior Technical Officer at Arun District Council and Dr.David Hagen who is a consultant in public health for the area. I suspect that for the moment this site will remain the only Internet resource with information on Lyme disease relating to the UK. I'll keep tabs on this and update the site with any other links as I come across them. Please email me with any additions. I hope this will prove useful for anyone interested in the disease, especially in the UK or Europe. There would appear to be little information online that does not relate purely to the USA, where Lyme is much more widespread and it must be stated, much more in the public mind. There is a brilliant newsgroup for Lyme patients (and anyone interested in the subject) you will need to subscribe to:

Introduction: Lyme disease was named in 1977 when arthritis was observed in a cluster of children in and around Lyme, Connecticut. Other clinical symptoms and environmental conditions suggested that this was an infectious disease probably transmitted by an arthropod. Further investigation revealed that Lyme disease is caused by the bacterium, Borrelia burgdorferi . These bacteria are transmitted to humans by the bite of infected deer ticks and cause more than 16,000 infections in the United States each year. What is Lyme Disease?
L yme disease (LD) is an infection caused by Borrelia burgdorferi , a type of bacterium called a spirochete (pronounced spy-ro-keet ) that is carried by deer ticks. An infected tick can transmit the spirochete to the humans and animals it bites. Untreated, the bacterium travels through the bloodstream, establishes itself in various body tissues, and can cause a number of symptoms, some of which are severe. LD manifests itself as a multisystem inflammatory disease that affects the skin in its early, localized stage, and spreads to the joints, nervous system and, to a lesser extent, other organ systems in its later, disseminated stages. If diagnosed and treated early with antibiotics, LD is almost always readily cured
