Symptoms and pathology of mad cow disease
The first diagnosis was in 1986
BSE was first diagnosed in Britain in 1986. It is very similar to scrapie, a well-known disease in sheep that has been recorded for more than 100 years. Scrapie is also a spongiform encephalopathy and is nearly always fatal.
Why did mad cow disease suddenly appear?
Mad cow disease started in Britain after cattle were fed a protein
In 1957, D. Carleton Gajdusek (United States National Institutes of Health) and Vincent Zigas (Australian Public Health Service) described a strange disease among the Fore highlanders of Papua New Guinea. Victims of the condition showed a gradual loss of coordination, and then a sort of premature dementia and an early death. Smart scientific detective work showed that the disease, called kuru, was caused by something that was passed on during ritual cannibalism, when the brains of recently deceased people were eaten. This work involved inoculating chimpanzees with material from the brains of people who had died of kuru. (In 1976, Dr Gajdusek and Dr Baruch Blumberg shared the Nobel prize. Gajdusek for his work on kuru, Blumberg for his work on the hepatitis B virus.)

Archives January Hour Two: 'Mad Cow Disease' / BSE Concern over 'mad cow disease' continued to spread in Europe this week. Two cases of the disease, more properly known as bovine spongiform encephalopathy, have been found in cattle in Italy. In November 2000, Germany and Spain reported discovering their own native cases of BSE. BSE has not yet been found in the USA, although scrapie (found in sheep) and chronic wasting disease (found in deer and elk), two related diseases, have been found on U.S. soil.

    Dr. M. Kubo, NIAH, Japan.
BSE is thought to be passed from animal to animal through consumption of nervous system tissues from infected animals. These tissues have been included in 'meat and bone meal' in the past, which many farmers have used as protein supplements for their livestock, thus spreading the disease. Many scientists believe that BSE is linked to a human brain disease, variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (vCJD). According to the World Health Organization, vCJD is "strongly linked to exposure, probably through food, to BSE." Worldwide, over 80 people are known to have died from vCJD. In addition to food products, there is concern over some vaccines made with animal products. Although an FDA advisory committee found the risk of transmission of BSE through vaccines to be 'theoretical and remote,' the committee recommended that vaccines produced with bovine-related materials from countries known to have BSE be replaced with ones from BSE-free countries.

SCIENCE FRIDAY... Science Friday Archives May Hour Two: Mad Cow Disease and CJD A study released last week in the U.K. failed to find evidence that tainted beef from the "mad cow disease" epidemic of 1996 has caused widespread illness in people. After studying samples taken from over 3000 people, the researchers found no signs of new variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (nvCJD), which is strongly believed to be related to bovine spongiform encephalopathy (commonly called mad cow disease or BSE.) They reported early results of their work in the medical journal The Lancet.
Changes to a small portion of this protein may change it from a normal protein to an infectious prion. (image: Inst. for Mol. Biology and Biophysics, Swiss Federal Inst. of Technology) Another paper recently released in the Annals of Neurolog y, however, paints a gruesome picture of the progression of nvCJD. There is no treatment for nvCJD doctors can simply try to make the patient comfortable. Tracking 35 patients over a period that averaged 14 months, the research team watched as the patients progressed from psychiatric symptoms such as depression to neurologic symptoms, such as coordination problems and involuntary movements. Some felt numbness or painful sensations in their skin and limbs. As the patients neared death, they gradually slipped into helplessness, losing the ability to move or speak.

BSE (MAD COW DISEASE) Written by Roy Moore, Maverick Ranch Association
Reviewed by Gary Smith PhD, Colorado State University
Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) or Mad Cow Disease has captured the attention of the news media. Consumers are expressing concern as the media reports only a small portion of the story. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS), along with other safety organizations have taken precautionary measures to ensure the safety of our beef in the United States. Additionally, there have been ongoing studies to define the exact cause and nature of the disease. At this time, there have not been any known cases of BSE in the United States and continued steps are being taken to prevent BSE from affecting the U.S.
Maverick Ranch Natural Beef has been inundated with calls regarding BSE over the past few months. As a measure to inform those concerned, we have put together the following question and answer summary on BSE and other similar diseases. There are many theories of Mad Cow Disease and the probable links to a similar disease in humans, New Variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (nvCJD). As a result, Roy Moore met with Dr. Gary Smith, who reviewed our questions and answers and suggested "firewalls" that Maverick Ranch could enact to protect our consumers in the best way possible. These "firewalls" and Maverick's coarse of action appear following the questions and answers.

As the disease bores holes into the brain, victims become depressed, hallucinatory, mute, and finally, they die. Ninety people, mostly in England, have died of "new variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease" (nvCJD)—the human version of "mad cow disease," which is officially known as bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE). The victims apparently became ill after eating BSE-contaminated beef. Since the disease came to light in 1989, governments and industry insiders have been working to prevent an epidemic. An outbreak of mad cow disease in the United States seems unlikely, according to an upcoming report by the Harvard Center for Risk Analysis. The team of scientists bases its findings on the prevention measures adopted in this country 10 years ago. Those measures ban imported European cattle and the feeding of ground-up cattle parts to other cattle, a practice blamed for the recent spread of mad cow disease to some European countries. Some chinks in the U.S.'s armor have appeared. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently announced that Purina Mills provided feed containing the banned meat-and-bone meal (MBM) to 1,200 Texas cattle. The company has agreed to buy and destroy the cows. Also, about 1,000 European cows have entered the country since the ban was enacted a decade ago, although none were found to be diseased.

Mad Cow Disease Question: "Is U.S. Beef Safe?" Answer: In a degenerative disease in cows called, Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy, the causative organism eats holes in the cows brain tissue, which causes abnormal behavior and results in death. But questions remain as to whether recent European cases of Creutzfeldt Jakob disease, a human spongiform, are linked to exposure to cattle with Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy. In the 1970's a change in animal waste disposal, in which sheep wastes were fed to cows could have provided a pathway of transmission, infecting the cattle. One explanation for this disease, in humans, includes the mutation of prion proteins causing them to eat away at neurons. There are a number of alternative theories. Mad Cow Disease (BSE) Because of NSP's long-standing commitment to superior quality, our consumers may rest assured that all of our products are free of Mad Cow Disease. NSP has taken steps to protect our customers from this anathema for nearly a decade. As an additional proactive measure to ensure safe products, NSP has obtained a written guarantee from each of our bovine material suppliers that the materials are free from disease. All bovine raw materials used in our products are sourced exclusively from countries deemed by U.S. regulatory authorities to be "BSE-free." Our gelatin products, including the capsules that encase many of our products, are especially safe from contamination. In addition to the above precautions, we ensure that gelatin of bovine origin we procure has been specially processed at temperatures and pH levels that denature the proteinaceous prions that transmit the disease, should they somehow be present. Ed Corlett, of the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service Public Affairs Office, said of Nature's Sunshine Products, "Companies like yours, that take proactive measures to keep the public safe, will prevent the spread of BSE."

    Mad cow disease: A timeline
Compiled from Times wires Mad cow, first diagnosed in 1986 in the United Kingdom, is thought to have resulted from the feeding of meat and bone meal containing infected sheep parts to cattle. The outbreak probably was then made worse by "amplification" feeding meat-and-bone meal made from those cattle to young calves. Here are some dates to track the disease and the attempts to control it.
November: BSE, bovine spongiform encephalopathy, or mad cow disease, is first confirmed in the U.K.
July: Meat and bone meal made from ruminants (grazing animals) is banned from inclusion into cattle feed in the U.K.
July: The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) bans the importation of ruminant animals from countries with confirmed cases of BSE.
December: The USDA bans at-risk by-products of ruminant origin from countries known to have BSE.
