http://www.drlockie.com/disease/rubella.htm
Rubella (German measles) A mild but very infectious viral illness, seldom serious in children - encephalitis is an extremely rare complication - but very serious during first 3 months of pregnancy. One attack usually confers immunity for life. Incubation is 14-21 days, and infection usually runs its course in 4-5 days. First stage is mild fever; second stage is swollen glands behind ears (when rubbed, glands feel like hard peas); third stage is orange-pink rash which spreads from face to rest of body. Arthritic inflammation affecting several joints is an occasional complication when the rash is fading. Specific remedies to be given every 4 hours for up to 10 doses once rubella is diagnosed
  • Swollen glands, ear pains on swallowing, symptoms alleviated by cold drinks Phytolacca 30c Onset of rash, child tearful and red-eyed, yellow catarrh Pulsatilla 30c
Immunization Since 1988 a combined vaccine against measles, mumps and rubella has been introduced for infants. If your daughter has not had this, your GP may be prepared to do a blood test to confine immunity when she is aged 12. Homeopathic immunization, using Rubella 30c nosode (see nosode for definition ), can be given as pan of preconceptual care if your daughter is unable to have the ordinary immunization but is nevertheless at risk. Rubella (German Measles)
Rubella is an infection caused by the rubella virus. It occurs most commonly in young children, but can affect anyone. The illness is usually mild. But, rubella in a pregnant woman can cause serious damage to the unborn child. Immunisation has made rubella uncommon in the UK.
What are the symptoms of rubella? No symptoms may occur when you are infected with rubella. This is called a 'sub-clinical infection'. If symptoms do develop, they include the following.
  • Swollen glands, usually behind the ears and at the back of the neck. Sometimes glands in other parts of the body swell. The glands gradually go back to normal over a week or so.
  • A spotty, pink-red rash develops anytime up to 7 days after the glands swell. The rash usually starts on the face, and then spreads to the rest of the body. The rash lasts 1-5 days before fading.
  • A mild fever, cold, cough, and sore throat are common
  • Sore red eyes (conjunctivitis) may develop for a few days.
  • Joint pains, like a mild arthritis, may develop for a week or so. This is uncommon in children, but is quite common in adults with rubella.
Bleeding disorders and brain inflammation (encephalitis) are rare complications.

RUBELLA (German Measles)
This infant has the rash of Congenital Rubella (German Measles). He caught it from his un-immunized mother before birth. These infants are at great risk for severe mental retardation, deafness, blindness (atrophic eyes, cataracts, and chorioretinitis) as well as congenital heart disease and other abnormalities. This disease has been nearly eradicated in the United States as the result of routine Rubella Vaccine use. In earlier years, as many as 20,000 infants were severely affected each year.

Rubella is a viral illness that results in a viral exanthem. Exanthem is another name for a rash or skin eruption. It is spread from one child to another through direct contact with discharge from the nose and throat. Warning: Pregnant women who have been exposed to rubella need to seek medical attention immediately. Infants and children who develop the disease usually only have a mild case of the rash and side effects. However, children who develop the disease in utero, or from their mother while she is pregnant, can have severe birth defects and consequences. It is also very dangerous for pregnant women to come in contact with someone who has rubella, because it may cause a miscarriage.

RUBELLA—german measles, ubella is usually a mild illness and is oftennot recognised, the child simply being 'under the weather'.
http://www.babydirectory.com/doctor/rubella.htm
ubella is usually a mild illness and is often not recognised, the child simply being 'under the weather'. Its importance is the potential effects on an unborn foetus if infection is acquired during early pregnancy. The introduction of the MMR vaccine has reduced the incidence of primary rubella infection, and the number of severely affected unborn babies. The incubation period is 14-21 days, fever is often mild, and children do not feel particularly unwell, unlike measles infection. A pink rash appears 3-4 days after the onset of the illness, mostly on the body, and lasts for only about 3 days. Children may have a cough, and their glands may swell slightly for a few days. Complications are very rare. There is no specific treatment. Woman who may be pregnant should not come into contact with infected children . In the future, the risk of infection in pregnancy should be reduced as the currently immunised children grow into protected adults.

FACTBOX: * Rubella is a mild disease caused by a virus. If someone has rubella they usually feel unwell with swollen glands, sore throat and a slight temperature. They may also develop a rash and have mild pain or discomfort in the joints. Some people have no symptoms at all. * The only way to diagnose rubella is through a blood test. * Rubella virus is found in the nose and throat of infected people. Direct contact with secretions or exposure to a cough or sneeze can spread the disease. * The virus is only serious if caught by a pregnant woman. It can be passed on to her unborn child, who is said to have congenital rubella syndrome (CRS). Typical impairments caused to a child with CRS include loss of hearing in one or both ear, cataracts in one or both eyes (or rarer conditions that impair sight as they get older), heart problems and damage to the brain and central nervous system.

'Your Health' Home 'Your Health' Topics About This Site Dictionary ... Links YOUR HEALTH: Measles There are three types of illnesses referred to as measles:
  • rubeola, commonly called ' red measles rubella , commonly called ' German measles roseola , commonly called ' baby measles
All three types of measles are caused by viruses. Vaccinations are available against the red and German measle viruses (but not against the baby measle virus). Because of the possibility of serious complications from red and German measles, vaccination is strongly recommended.
Rubeola / red measles:
Red measles is the most severe type of measles. The initial symptoms of red measles include:
  • feeling very ill a high fever a harsh, dry cough a runny nose red puffy eyes that are sensitive to light.
Red measles generally appears 7 - 14 days after exposure to someone with red measles. A rash will usually appear about 3 - 4 days after the initial symptoms, beginning on the face and spreading downward to the trunk, arms and legs. Fever and cough often appear 3 - 4 days before the rash. The rash will usually fade in 4 - 7 days. Occasionally, complications like pneumonia and encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) will develop. These complication can lead to deafness, blindness or retardation. As a result, Health Canada, The Canadian Medical Association and Calgary Health Region strongly recommend that every infant be vaccinated to provide protection against red measles.

German Measles or Rubella Best prevention Symptoms Children are not usually affected too badly, and often the first manifestation is the rash. This is a fine, pink rash spreading from the forehead and face downwards. The rash may last for 1 to 5 days. There are often some of the glands (lymph nodes) enlarged, especially behind the ears and on the back of the head. Adults often feel more unwell before the rash appears, and may have pains in the joints rather like arthritis. The incubation period, from exposure to the appearance of the rash, is usually 14 to 21 days. Rubella is infectious from one week before until four days after the rash first appears. It is spread either by direct contact with sneezing or coughing. Diagnoses and treatment There is no specific treatment for rubella. The infected person should rest while they have a fever. Keep a child or adult cool by reducing the amount of clothing or bedding and by giving paracetamol as prescribed on the bottle. The diagnoses is usually made on the basis of the story and the symptoms and signs. Laboratory tests are unlikely to be of practical value except in a pregnant woman. It is routine in Ireland for women to have their rubella immunity checked once it is known they are pregnant. If a woman is found not to be immune to rubella, she will be vaccinated following that particular pregnancy. When the vaccine is given it is essential to avoid pregnancy in the subsequent three months.
