Welcome to the Hellenic Melanoma Site. This is a cooperative gateway to the scientific world of melanoma. You are invited to join us to a space where everyone can contribute, where everyone together can build a clearinghouse for educational information and research activity concerning melanoma in Greece. The primary purpose of the HMS is to provide knowledge about the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of melanoma. The final goal is to explore the profile of melanoma in Greece in comparison with melanoma worldwide. Since 1986, the Department of Plastic Surgery and Microsurgery and the Department of Pathology in the General Hospital of Athens "G. Gennimatas", have founded a collaborating group for the prevention, early diagnosis and surgical treatment of melanoma.
This collaboration led, in 1989, to the establishment of an outpatient clinic for Pigmented Skin Lesions (PSL). A mean number of 40 patients are clinically examined weekly. Biopsies and histological examinations are performed, when needed.
The progressively increasing number of patients gave us the possibility to expand our activities in the field of research and to develop a database for a close follow up of the patients.

RULE #1
LOTS OF SKIN LESIONS HAVE PIGMENT, BUT.....
Beware of Irregular Color and Contour!
Note the CONTOUR of this lesion is very IRREGULAR with some areas of notching. Note also the COLOR of the lesion is very IRREGULAR with several shades of brown, black, and even areas of red and white.
*So what is a MELANOMA? Melanoma is a potentially deadly form of skin cancer that arises from the pigmented cells, or melanocytes of the skin. It seems to occur more often in people with many SUNBURNs. In the US, about 1 in every 100 people will develop melanoma! achuntley@ucdavis.edu

High quality photographs of melanomas, along with descriptive information intended to help people Category Health Conditions and Diseases Cancer melanoma...... general medical community increase their awareness of the changes in moles that couldindicate the development of cancerous changes known as malignant melanoma
http://www.dermatology.org/molemelanoma/introduction.html
This website has been designed to help members of the public and the general medical community increase their awareness of the changes in moles that could indicate the development of cancerous changes known as malignant melanoma.
Detection, diagnosis, and treatment of cutaneous malignant melanomas at the earliest possible stage will give the highest possible cure rate.
We know that people with a large number of moles have an increased risk of developing a malignant melanoma. We also know that people with atypical (unusual) moles are more likely to develop new and changing lesions.
It is important to know the special characteristics of moles that have a higher tendency to become malignant melanomas. The 19 pictures shown in the section "What to watch for" show the ABCD's of changes seen in confirmed malignant melanomas. Each example shows some of the features that can be seen in abnormal or changing moles.
If you have any moles that you are concerned about please see your physician.

General Information About Melanoma
Key Points for This Section
Melanoma is a disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the skin cells called melanocytes (cells that color the skin).
Melanocytes are found throughout the lower part of the epidermis . They produce melanin , the pigment that gives skin its natural color. When skin is exposed to the sun, melanocytes produce more pigment, causing the skin to tan, or darken. The skin is the body's largest organ. It protects against heat, sunlight, injury, and

Types of Skin Conditions, Their Causes and Treatments
The largest human organ isn't the liver, the kidneys or the lungs: it's the skin. Our skin is our front line protection against the outside world. It guards our internal organs against sunburn, dirt, and other dangers. It's also an integral part of our appearance.
Skin disorders number in the hundreds. Dermatitis, melanoma and other types of skin cancer, male pattern baldness, eczema, and psoriasis are just a few of the many types of skin problems. They can be caused by food allergies, sunburn, hormones, pregnancy, genetics or a host of other causes. Skin problems are rarely life threatening. Even skin cancer (including melanoma) often responds well to treatment if detected early enough. In advanced stages, however, melanoma is difficult to cure. Vaccines show promise against melanoma
March 2, 1998 Web posted at: 9:07 p.m. EST (0207 GMT) NEW YORK (CNN) Two vaccines to make the body attack the deadliest form of skin cancer, melanoma, are showing early promise in patients. The patients had advanced cancer. While tumors shrank in some of them after treatment, it's too early to know whether the therapy known as immunotherapy will help patients live longer. Generally, there are three methods of treatment for cancer surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. Now researchers are hopeful immunotherapy can be a viable fourth option. "In immunotherapy, you alter the body so that the body itself can recognize the cancer as foreign and attempt to reject it," said Dr. Steven Rosenberg of the National Cancer Institute. Melanoma vaccines to treat the disease rather than prevent it have long been tried in patients, and some past studies have reported they prolong life. The new work is reported in the March issue of the journal Nature Medicine. One study was done by Rosenberg and colleagues at the National Cancer Institute. Their vaccine used a modified bit of protein the immune system can recognize on cancer cells.
