MELANOMA
Skin cancer, caused mainly by ultra violet radiation from the sun has three main types:
  • Basal cell carcinoma
  • Squamous cell carcinoma
  • Melanoma
Melanoma is the most dangerous form of skin cancer. In fact, of the 1,200 skin cancer deaths in Australia each year, 80% are from melanoma. Melanoma usually begins in the skin but if not detected early and treated properly melanoma can spread to other parts of the body. Melanoma can occur in all age groups from the late teens through to old age. In Australia, more than 6,000 people are diagnosed with melanoma each year. Melanoma is the fourth most common cancer in Australia and incidence rates are increasing. It is estimated that one in 35 Australians will develop melanoma by the age of 75. Anyone who has had unprotected exposure to the sun is at risk of developing melanoma. However, there are certain risk factors that mean some people are more likely to develop melanoma than others. These include:

Available for telephone consultations with melanoma patients and family members. For newly-diagnosed melanoma patients and for patients with recurrent melanoma. Information and support concerning metastatic melanoma and melanoma clinical trials. Who Am I? I am the patient educator and clinical psychologist at the Melanoma Center at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). The Melanoma Center is part of the UCSF Comprehensive Cancer Center. Over the last 17 years, I have met individually with over 6,500 melanoma patients, and each week I meet with five or six new patients. Usually the patient's spouse or other family members also participate in these meetings. I meet with patients in the course of their initial visit to the UCSF Melanoma Center. My role is to help patients gain a better understanding about their diagnosis and the medical treatments, and to provide support and guidance to patients and their families in coping with melanoma and the many stresses and uncertainties it creates. I also participate in the weekly case conference in which all of the specialists on our melanoma team put their heads together in assessing each new case and in formulating individually-tailored treatment plans. About Melanoma
Melanoma is the most serious form of skin cancer. Even so, if diagnosed and removed while it is still thin and limited to the outermost skin layer, it is almost 100% curable. Once the cancer advances and metastasizes (spreads) to other parts of the body, it is hard to treat and can be deadly. During the past 10 years the number of cases of melanoma has increased more rapidly than that of any other cancer. Over 51,000 new cases are reported to the American Cancer Society each year, and it is probable that a great many more occur and are not reported.

The number of people who develop melanoma is increasing faster than any other cancer. Deaths from complications of this disease are increasing at a faster rate than deaths from any other form of cancer except lung cancer. On May 23rd, 1999, melanoma claimed the life of Peter M. In addition to raising funds for melanoma research, contributions are also made to the Vermont Respite House in Williston, Vermont and the Sugarbush Ski Patrol that Peter served proudly on for twelve years. Although the overall 5-year survival rate is over 85%, it is only 40% in patients with node-positive disease. Once metastatic, the median survival is about 9 months with less than 15% of patients alive at 5 years. Better treatments are urgently needed.
The Melanoma Study Group (MSG) is an interdisciplinary group of clinicians and scientists at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN; Jacksonville, FL and Scottsdale, AZ working together with the goal of developing new and more effective therapies for malignant melanoma. Utilizing modern day scientific and technological advances, the Group integrates the efforts of members from multiple clinical and basic science disciplines focused on improving the care of patients with malignant melanoma.

The Clinical Trials component of the MSG activities represents a coordinated effort of a large number of individuals concentrated on the study of novel therapies for patients with malignant melanoma. The trials are designed in such a fashion to ensure patient safety and to allow appropriate evaluation of the new treatments. But what many people may not realize is that tanning is actually quite dangerous and not so healthy after all. Too much exposure to UV radiation can damage the skin and lead to melanoma, a cancer that originates in skin cells known as melanocytes . In the U.S., melanoma is most common among whites. But worldwide, approximately 40% of all melanomas develop in nonwhite populations. The number of melanoma cases is increasing faster than any other cancer, especially in geographical areas where the population is largely white and the climate is sunny and hot. Unlike many cancers, researchers are fairly certain that they have identified one of the causes of melanoma: over-exposure to a certain kind of ultraviolet radiation (UVB wavelengths). The best prevention is to protect yourself from the damaging rays of the sun. Protect your children as well. People who have experienced severe sunburns as a child are considered "at risk" for developing melanoma.
