PMS and Cramps
This complaint seems to be the most common menstruatal problem. Cramps range from mildly annoying to intense, all-encompassing, double-you-over pain. The cause of PMS and menstrual cramping seems to be a drop in the level of blood calcium (when blood calcium levels drop symptoms include: muscle cramps, headaches, body aches, sleeplessness, water retention and depression, hmmmm sounds like all the common symptoms of PMS!). In menstruating women, blood calcium level can begin to fall off about 10 days (give or take) prior to the start of the menstrual period. It stands to reasons, then that you should increase your intake of calcium at this time. Calcium supplements are important (use a biochelated form), but so is naturally occurring calcium in foods and herbs. Some foods and herbs that have a good amount of easily assimilatable calcium are things like: yogurt, kelp (and other seaweed), sesame seeds (and tahini which is made from sesame seed) kale, spinach, parsley, raspberry leaf, comfrey leaf, alfalfa, oatstraw and nettle. Since calcium and vitamin-D work in synergy and alfalfa and nettles contain a goodly amount of both a possible calcium rich tea might be: 2 parts alfalfa, 3 parts nettles, 2 parts oatstraw, 3 parts rasberry leaf and 1/2 to 1 part horsetail. Infuse 1 to 1 1/2 teaspoons per cup, the best way is to make a quart the night before, place the loose herbs in a quart jar, pour 1 quart of boiling water over the herbs, cover loosely and let sit all night. Next morning, strain out the herbs and put the liquid into a thermos or refrigerate. Drink the quart during the course of the day. The Uni-Tea Company has a great blend also, the tea is called FemininiTea and contains Raspberry Leaves, Nettles, Ginger, Licorice, Chamomile, Sarsaparilla, Rosemary, Rose Petals, Yellow Dock, Uva Ursi, Dong Quai, Peony, Lavender, and Angelica.

Question Posted By: teen mom on Saturday, October 05, 2002
I am 22 and just had my son in December of 2000. Approximately three months later I had a cervical biopsy done because of abnormal cells found. I have not had a period since. The doctor did an ultrasound and did not find any blood pockets in my uterus, but he said my cervix was scarred shut. Every month for three days at the same time I have all of the symptoms of my menstrual cycle, but they are much more intense. I have tremendous cramps and tenderness in my stomach area, feel nauseated, have headaches, feel sore all over my whole body, and I am very moody. This month I thought I felt cysts on both sides of my stomach area. I take up to three ibuprofen and this just allows me to function halfway. The tenderness is so bad that no pressure can be put on my stomach for those three days. I have also been having persistent headaches for about two months and lymphnodes under my arm keep getting swollen. I have a few questions.
1. Is it possible that the surgeon doing biopsy did something wrong?

I was wondering about Provera. I stopped taking my birth control pills
about 1 and a half years ago (due to high blood pressure). I did not get
my period. In June, my primary care doctor gave me Provera to jumpstart it.
I got my period. By August, I had not had my period, but had a bacterial
infection, followed by a yeast infection, and then followed by two months
of bleeding. I had to go to a Gynecologist, and she put me on Provera permenantly. One
problem, I had abnormally heavy periods for three months, and then I started having miagranes with my periods. I have had to cut back on the Provera (every other month) because of the side effects I get. Just the other day, I thought

Vitex agnus-castus is also known as Chasteberry and agnus castus. It helps with female hormonal imbalances. In women it is used in the treatment of PMS irritability, breast pain and water retention. Often used with sage for hot flushes. When coming off the pill it has been known to help restore a regular menstrual cycle, or when the cycle has been disrupted.
Hormonally, it acts on the pituitary gland in the brain stimulating the release of lutenizing hormone, which stimulates the production of progesterone. Hence its somewhat dampening effect on men! It is still used in some monasteries to help the monks keep to their vows of chastity. The best time to take this herb is in the morning, before breakfast.
Kava Kava helps relax the uterus and so is used to treat menstrual cramps. It can be very effective in a relatively short time, by working like a local anaesthetic and relieving pain. Kava Kava contains two pain-relieving chemicals that are considered as effective as aspirin.

Peak Talk Submit your email address for a FREE training tips newsletter: Why synchronised swimmers are protected from menstrual problems The physiological and aesthetic demands of synchronised swimming are similar to those of gymnastics and dancing. But do synchronised swimmers suffer menstrual disturbance to the same extent as female gymnasts and dancers - or do they have more in common with conventional swimmers, who are relatively protected from the 'female athletic triad' of disordered eating, amenorrhoea (absent periods) and osteoporosis? These are the questions a pair of researchers from the British Olympic Medical Centre set out to answer with a study of the Great Britain synchronised swimming squads. Seven members of the senior squad and 16 of the junior squad filled in a questionnaire designed to assess the normality of their menstrual cycles and also underwent a range of physiological tests. Analysis revealed that only three of the subjects were oligomenorrhoeic (with menstrual cycles longer than 35 days) and none were amenorrhoeic. The mean age of menarche (onset of menstruation) was 13.7 years. Mean estimated body fat percentage was 23% and mean VO2max was 47.2ml/kg/min.

Natural Treatments for Menstrual Problems
A woman's menstrual cycle is strongly influenced by diet, physical exercise, and emotions. Discomfort during periods may take the form of headaches, backaches, cramps, nausea, and heart palpitations. Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) often affects women in their thirties, during the premenopausal years, when hormonal imbalances may cause headaches, irritability, fluid retention, and mood swings. Regular exercise promotes the smooth regulation of hormone levels, and taking the time for relaxation, especially through yoga, tai chi, or deep breathing exercises, helps reduce the tension and anxiety that often contribute to menstrual problems.

Nutrition and Supplements Many women have found that avoiding certain foods, especially those high in sugar, salt, fat, and caffeine, can reduce the discomforts of PMS and other menstrual problems. A diet centered around whole grains and beans, fresh fruits and vegetables, and nuts and seeds helps the body eliminate excessive amounts of estrogen, which is a primary factor in menstrual difficulties. Dairy products, red meats, and other sources of saturated fats should be avoided because they contribute to the production of excess estrogen. Foods rich in essential fatty acids, such as salmon, trout, and other fatty fish can help regulate Prostaglandins, hormone-like chemicals that are associated with PMS symptoms. Supplements that may help to relieve menstrual difficulties include: o vitamin E, 400 IU daily: to help regulate Prostaglandins

Night sweats. Super sensitive breasts. All the things we hate about being a woman.
Ninety percent of American women suffer from some type of menstrual problem. (Is the rest of the world much different?)Why? Because we are the first generation of women to be toxic with copper, the biochemical villain in this passion play. Ladies, if your copper/zinc ratio is out of whack, it upsets your estrogen/progesterone balance. This is the root of the problem. Returning that ratio to normal is the key. Menstruating women: say sayonora to PMS. Perimenopausal and post-menopausal women, you don't need artificial hormones to go through this natural life cycle.
