Microphthalmia, Anophthalmia and other related eye disorders Hi, I'm Diann. I decided to build a site for Microphthalmia and Anophthalmia when our youngest son, Jacob was diagnosed with Microphthalmia with cyst,and Coloboma of the right eye when he was 3 weeks old. Jacob at 8 months old: 1 month after getting his first artificial eye. Searching for information on Jakes condition was extremely frustrating and disappointing. There didn't seem to be much out there to help satisfy my urgency to know more about what our son was born with, not to mention what we can do to help him. It wasn't until I started corresponding with other families around the world, that I felt less alone. Being able to talk with others who know what you are going through and what your about to go through makes all the difference in the world! As I look back and write our initial story and prepare other family's stories, I can't believe how far we all have come *smile* Through the internet I have found wonderful friends that have helped me through hard frustrating times as well as joyous times. We e-mail, chat, and make plans to meet sometime, somewhere in the near future, and I hope one day I can meet each and everyone!

A Singular View My name is Kelly. I am the mother of two wonderful children. This website is about my son Steven... Steven age 9 months He was born with microphthalmia (small eye), partial aniridia (absence of iris) and retinal coloboma (closure defects). These conditions left him unilaterally sighted. I'm making this website in the hopes of connecting with other people who are unilaterally sighted, have family members like this, or people with these eye conditions. Five and a half years ago all I knew about Microphthalmia was that it meant small eye. I've been online for several years now and have made many eye friends. There is such a great comfort in knowing that there are other people dealing with the same situations that you are dealing with. That there are people who have handled what you're about to go through, and being able to help someone deal with something that you have already been through. It was the love and support of my family and friends that helped me deal with what I had once thought was a nightmare. In particular, my mother, who would think nothing of dropping everything and driving two hours, sometimes in the middle of the night, when I needed her. Pam Henderson, Peripatetic teacher in Lincolnshire, gives some background to the condition and describes her own involvement with parents and the media over the years. Seven years ago, I began to be concerned about the numbers of visually impaired children in the rural areas of Lincolnshire. I collated information and statistics and began to try to construct common factors between the children affected. In 1993, Mike Paduano, a reporter from the Observer newspaper in London heard of my concerns and the support group which I had formed in this region called VIPS (Visually Impaired and Parents Support). This is a group for all visually impaired children and their families - amongst whom were those with microphthalmia and anophthalmia. I was faxed an extract of a report about a piece of research carried out in the USA indicating that rats, heavily exposed to a particular fungicide, produced offspring which were either anophthalmic, microphthalmic or who had other eye abnormalities. After reading this, I questioned whether children in Lincolnshire could have been similarly affected due to exposure to a chemical. The same fungicide as that mentioned in the extract was, and still could be, used by farmers on agricultural or fruit crops. Indeed one of the parents, a farmer, had well recorded evidence of when he himself had used this particular fungicide. At meetings, finding conception dates from a room full of parents has caused considerable humour! I had very soon discovered that birth dates were of little relevance as not all the children had been born full term.

The definition of microphthalmia is "small eye", in this case referring to the actual eyeBALL rather than the bones around the eye or the appearance of the eye. There are some people who have the -appearance- of one eye being smaller than the other due to changes in the bones or eyelids, but the eyball is actually of normal size. I suppose this is the distinction that this person might have been making. I wouldn't refer to this as "microphthalmia" or "false microphthalmia".
