The world is moving too fast, lamented the successful middleaged stock broker. He was having trouble sleeping and getting a migraine headache almost daily.

Creating a Universe
by David Simon, M.D. "Each thing we see hides something else we want to see."
René Magritte
From a Western perspective, this man was having caffeine-withdrawal headaches, exacerbated by his irregular sleep-wake pattern. From the Ayurvedic point-of-view this poor man's life was being ruled by movement without rhythm. The air element (Vayu) had become excessive and was carrying him away. He needed to come back down to earth (Prithivi) , and recapture his steadiness, stability, and balance that had always been his character. He needed to remember what he was really made of and return to his true nature. Despite some dissenters, the Big Bang theory is the prevailing explanation of the origin of the cosmos. But although it seems to fairly accurately describe the universe as we perceive it, the theory raises the question of what preceded the cosmic explosion? Where did the original entity come from? How long did it exist before exploding? What caused it to suddenly break apart?

44. Depakote
Information from the manufacturer about divalproex sodium for migraine prevention, including side effects and other concerns.
http://www.rxabbott.com/br/dp/dp001.htm
DEPAKOTE is indicated for prophylaxis of migraine headaches. There is no evidence that DEPAKOTE is useful in the acute treatment of migraine headaches. Because valproic acid may be a hazard to the fetus, DEPAKOTE should be considered for women of childbearing potential only after this risk has been thoroughly discussed with the patient and weighed against the potential benefits of treatment. Gastrointestinal System
Nervous System
Other
  • Hepatic failure resulting in fatalities has occurred in patients receiving valproic acid and its derivatives. Patients should be monitored closely for the appearance of nonspecific symptoms which may precede hepatotoxicity. Liver function tests should be performed prior to therapy and at frequent intervals thereafter, especially during the first 6 months. Depakote should not be administered to patients with hepatic disease or significant hepatic dysfunction.
  • Cases of life-threatening pancreatitis have been reported in adults and children receiving valproate, either initially or after several years of use. Some cases were described as hemorrhagic with a rapid progression from onset to death. Patients should be warned that symptoms of pancreatitis require prompt medical evaluation. If pancreatitis is diagnosed, valproate should be discontinued.
  • The frequency of adverse effects (particularly elevated liver enzymes and thrombocytopenia) may be dose-related.

Migraine Update
Migraine headaches affect 28 million Americans, 75 percent of whom — roughly 21 million people — are women. Migraine symptoms occur in various combinations and include pain, extreme sensitivity to light and sound, nausea and vomiting. The pain of migraine is often described as an intense pulsing or throbbing pain in one area of the head. Some individuals can predict the onset of a migraine with tell-tale signs that include visual disturbances. This is called a migraine "aura." Despite the fact that 1 in 4 households in the United States have someone affected by migraine headaches, migraine is still not considered by many employers and insurers to be a legitimate medical problem. Migraine, however, can cause significant disability and costs the American taxpayers $13 billion in missed work or reduced productivity annually.

The main types of migraine in office practice
Most migraines seen in physicians' offices are migraine without aura (formerly called "common migraine") and migraine with aura (formerly called "classic migraine" by some). Migraine aura without headache is also quite common, and is seen often by ophthalmologists. Neurologists and headache specialists often treat status migrainosus, characterized by a headache phase of over 72 hours. The other migraine types are listed in the left side bar and are fully described in the Headache Classification Committee's classification (1988).
