But if you have dry mouth all, or most of the time, it can be uncomfortable and can lead to serious health problems. Dry mouth symptoms include: A sticky, dry or burning feeling in the mouth Problems with chewing, swallowing, tasting, or speaking Halitosis/mouth odor Cracked lips, mouth sores

Question Posted By: Alex on Thursday, January 28, 1999
I'm scared to death that I might have mouth cancer. I'm 19
years old and I attended boarding school for a 4 year period.
During this time I used chewing tobacco fairly consistantly
(anywhere from 1 to 4 or 5 times a day) However I never used smokeless tobacco in the summer. In the winter of my senior year I developed what appeared to be a large pimple on the edge of my upper lip. Although it got smaller, it never fully went away. I went to a doctor and he said it had nothing to do with smokeless tobacco or cancer. Then in November of this year (my freshman year in college) I noticed a few bumps or growths located in the area under my tongue. I don't really think they have grown at all, but they

Dentists say people are unaware of the dangers
A campaign has been launched to raise awareness of mouth cancer which kills around 200 Scots each year.
Dentists are putting into action a plan to enlist the services of all health workers in their battle against the killer disease.
Every year, 500 people in Scotland find out they are suffering from oral cancer - and nearly half of them will die. The disease is twice as common north of the border and the number of sufferers has grown rapidly in recent years. But ignorance about its existence is high and survival rates are no better than they were in the 1970s. Early identification Dentists believe prospects could be improved if more cases are identified early on. But they reckon that could be difficult as only half the population is registered with a dentist. That often results in victims suffering discomfort in their mouths and only approaching health professionals when it is too late.

Mouth cancer can occur in any part of the mouth
Health officials have launched a public awareness campaign to tackle the number of deaths from mouth cancer. Pharmacists have joined forces with GPs and other medical professionals to increase awareness of the symptoms of the killer disease. Mouth cancer is a malignant growth which can occur in any part of the mouth, tongue or lips. The campaign was launched by the Lothian NHS Board to tie in with mouth cancer Awareness Week which starts on Monday. 'Chance of survival' Graham Ball, consultant in dental public health for NHS Lothian, said people must become more aware of the risks. He said: "Fortunately, most mouth ulcers are not harmful. "This campaign is designed to make sure that those who may develop mouth cancer are seen as quickly as possible. "This is very important because people who are diagnosed at an early stage have a better chance of survival."

10-16 NOVEMBER 2002 Mouth Cancers can occur in any part of the mouth, tongue, lips and throat. There has been a 16.6% increase in cases reported from 3,500 (1995) to 4,081 (1998). The use of tobacco, in all forms, and to a lesser extent alcohol abuse are the major risk factors for the development of mouth cancer. Smoking and alcohol consumption together greatly increase the risk factors. The risk of mouth cancer is increased 6-28 times in current smokers and the effects of tobacco and alcohol account for 75% of mouth cancer. However, 25% of mouth cancers are not associated with any known risk factors. It has now finally been recognized that mouth cancer can occur in either gender at any age. There is a growing concern at the increase among younger age groups. Public knowledge about mouth cancer is low, even more so in the socio-economic groups where the incidence is higher. Dr Joshi said You can reduce your chances of getting mouth cancers by: * Not smoking or chewing tobacco, gutkha/paan

From January 2001 Journal, Clinical Cancer Research

Researchers in California have determined that a chemical derived from soybeans can help prevent oral cancer, or cancer of the mouth. Scientists at the University of California at Irvine said their study is believed to be one of the first findings, based on human research, showing that the soybean derivative can play such a role in oral cancer prevention. Oral cancer has one of the lowest survival rates of all cancers. The soybean derivative studied is a chemical scientists call the Bowman-Birk inhibitor. The chemical was first identified by chemists almost four decades ago, but now the team of California scientists has determined that it can reduce the size of pre-cancerous lesions in the mouth which can lead to oral cancer. "This study shows that it may be possible to stave off the development of leukoplakia and therefore prevent more cases of oral cancer from occurring," Dr. Frank Meyskens, director of a university cancer center and a leader of the research team, said.
