Users of chewing tobacco place a golf-ball size wad of leaf tobacco (sold in a pouch) or plug tobacco (sold in a brick) between the cheek and gum. Most users leave the tobacco in place for several hours at a time to get continuous stimulation from the nicotine it contains. Snuff s used by placing a pinch of powdered tobacco (sold in cans) between the lower lip and the gum. As with chewing tobacco, the rich capillary supply and mucous membranes lining the mouth rapidly absorb nicotine into the bloodstream. Studies show that more than half of all smokeless tobacco users start the habit by age 13. What is the Trouble with Smokeless? Smokeless tobacco has multiple dangers according to health experts. Some of these dangers are life threatening:

Press Release Mouth cancer Awareness week "Routine and regular dental check-ups are vital in helping to detect early signs and symptoms of mouth cancer". This is the clear message given by Adrain Millen, Director of Dental Services of the Northern Health and Social Services Board. Mouth Cancer Awareness Week starts on Monday 12 November with the aim of informing more people about how to help prevent the disease. Around 100 people in Northern Ireland develop mouth cancer every year but if symptoms are spotted early and treated rapidly, patients have a good chance of making a full recovery. Mouth cancer can appear in deferent forms and can affect all parts of the mouth, tongue, and lips. Most often, cancer appears as a painless ulcer that does not clear up but sometimes a white or red patch in the mouth may develop into cancer. It is important to visit your dentist if these areas do not heal within two weeks. If your dentist suspects signs of cancer, you will be referred to a consultant who will carry out the necessary examinations. In Northern Ireland, people who develop mouth cancer receive their treatment under the guidance of consultant oral and maxillo-facial surgeons.

Orofacial cancers are cancers of the mouth cavity or face. They can be classified by pathologists as different histological types and more than 80% of the cancers that we see at Addenbrooke’s are squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) that have arisen from the skin (mucosa) of the mouth and lip. How common are oral or facial cancers? Mouth cancer is not one of the most common cancers but it is as common as cervical cancer, and it seems to be becoming more common (we don’t yet understand why this is). Each year, there are over 2,500 new cases of orofacial cancer diagnosed in people living in the UK. This figure might be up to 25% higher because people don’t recognise that they have a small cancer and do not seek help at an early stage. Taken together, oral and facial (orofacial) cancers are the sixth most common cancers worldwide. Are oral and facial cancers becoming more common?

New research to be published next year will provide powerful evidence that oral sex can cause mouth cancer. Doctors who first suggested a form of mouth cancer could be linked to the same sexually transmitted virus that causes cervical cancer have found more data to back their controversial theory. Two years ago, the group from Johns Hopkins University in the US published a paper suggesting the human papilloma virus (HPV), the cause of most cervical cancer, can also cause mouth cancer. A new study, to be published in six months' time, will confirm this research, according to Dr Maura Gillison, an oncologist and member of the Johns Hopkins group.

Dentists join the fight against cancer
Visiting a dentist might not be high on most people's list of things they like to do, but a new health awareness campaign shows that it might just save your life. November 11 marks the beginning of Mouth Cancer Awareness Week, a project supported by the British Dental Association (BDA) and ASH, which hopes to highlight the dangers of this debilitating and potentially deadly disease.
Someone dies from mouth cancer every five hours in the UK and for those diagnosed with the disease the outlook is bleak, with fewer than 50 per cent of those surviving five years. Those most at risk are smokers and drinkers over 40, but mouth cancer also hits ethnic communities hard, especially those from the Indian sub-continent who use chewing tobacco or betel nut.
The BDA's Gordon Watkins is concerned that, while public knowledge of the disease may have been heightened following the death of journalist and author John Diamond, still too few realise that a simple dental check-up could lead to early diagnosis and better chances of recovery.
"It is often the simplest things which are the most effective, and for mouth cancer it's the dental check-up. Your dentist isn't just checking for decay or gum disease - they have the potential to save your life. The British Dental Association is encouraging its members to educate

    Is Tobacco Safe?
Spit tobacco affects your dental health as well as the rest of your body. If you use smokeless tobacco and have thought about quitting, your dentist can help. In the meantime, here are a few facts that may help you decide to join the 200 million Americans who are tobacco-free. What is spit tobacco?
Spit tobacco includes snuff, a finely ground version of processed tobacco, and chewing tobacco in the form of shredded or pressed bricks and cakes, called plugs, or rope-like strands called twists. Users "pinch" or "dip" tobacco and place a wad in their cheek or between their lower lip and gums. In the United Kingdom, users often snort snuff. Isn't it safer than smoking?
Absolutely not. Some wrongly believe that spit tobacco is safer than smoking cigarettes. But spit tobacco is more addictive because it contains higher levels of addictive nicotine than cigarettes and can be harder to quit than cigarettes. One can of snuff delivers as much nicotine as 60 cigarettes.

Tobacco use and smoking are very dangerous addictions which commonly cause a wide variety of diseases, cancer and death. The vast majority of tobacco users and smokers are hooked when they are children. During this time period they are easily influenced by peer pressure and advertising. Once hooked, the majority of tobacco users become hopelessly addicted.
More than 5 million children living today will die prematurely because of a decision they will make as adolescents-the decision to use tobacco and smoke cigarettes. Studies indicate that nonsmokers are also adversely affected by environmental tobacco smoke. There are 4000 chemicals in tobacco with 100 identified poisons and 63 known drugs which cause cancer. The most talked about drug in tobacco is nicotine. Nicotine is vasoconstrictor and a nerve toxin, it has been classified as a class I insecticide. Other poisons include: Arsenic, Cyanide, Formaldehyde (used to embalm bodies), Ammonia Bromide (a toilet cleaner )- Ref. 1. Each year, because of exposure to environmental tobacco smoke, an estimated 3,000 nonsmoking Americans die of lung cancer, and 300,000 children suffer from lower respiratory tract infections.

    Summary
Minimise the risk of introducing disease on to your property by inspecting sheep carefully before buying, and by taking the listed precautions after the sheep arrive at your property. Methods are given for examining sheep for footrot, foot abscess, lice, scabby mouth, fleece rot, lumpy wool, pink eye, cancer and cheesy gland. There is always a risk that sheep bought at a saleyard will introduce unwanted disease to your property. Buyers have little opportunity to find out the disease history of sheep before purchase. However, by carefully observing the sheep and taking some simple precautions, you can minimise the chances of disease being introduced.
    Inspecting sheep in a pen
As you approach the pen, look for sheep holding feet in the air or limping. This can be a sign of virulent footrot, foot abscess or benign footrot. As you get closer to the pen, the sheep tend to forget about sore feet in their eagerness to get away. At the pen side, observe sheep for the following:

jcramer@welchlink.welch.jhu.edu A cancer of the mouth and throat linked in middle-aged people to smoking, drinking or specific genetic mutations is more likely in the elderly to result from random genetic errors accumulated over a lifetime in plain language, aging itself according to results of a study at The Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions. The Hopkins scientists report that squamous cell carcinoma in patients over age 75 "more commonly results from accumulated spontaneous mutations rather than through heavy exposure to known carcinogens, and less commonly involves mutation of the p53 gene." Mutation of the p53 gene, a tumor suppressor gene that normally helps to prevent the formation and growth of cancers, is the most common cancer-related genetic mutation. Many independent mutations in different genes are required for a cell to become a cancer cell. Results published in the March 1995 issue of Archives of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery suggest older people may develop cancer because they accumulate genetic mutations that usually occur only in people who have been exposed to carcinogens. The aging process itself may increase the tendency for certain older people to develop cancer, the researchers say. In support of this view, the study found that older patients who develop cancers besides those in the head and neck were more likely than their younger counterparts to get skin and prostate cancers as well. Both of these cancers are commonly associated with old age. In contrast, when middle-aged people developed other cancers, they were more likely to have lung and colon cancers. These cancers are strongly associated with smoking, drinking and mutations in the p53 gene.
