General Information PDF Brochure General Information What is Mayer-Rokitansky-Kuster-Hauser syndrome? Mayer- Rokitansky-Kuster-Hauser (MRKH) syndrome is an uncommon variation in the prenatal development of the female genital tract. Its features include an absent or very short vagina and a uterus that can be absent or immaturely formed. Females with MRKH syndrome have functioning ovaries, normal external genitalia and the typical, 46, XX, female chromosome pattern. Breast development and growth of pubic hair are also normal. Associated renal and/or skeletal abnormalities are common. MRKH syndrome is also known as Mullerian (female internal sex organs) Agenesis (no growth) syndrome (a group of related medical findings). How often does MRKH syndrome occur? The incidence of MRKH syndrome is approximately 1 in 4,000 - 5,000 female births. Although it has been determined that the absence of a vagina and uterus is a result of the Mullerian ducts failing to form properly early in embryonic development, its underlying cause is unknown. Founded by the playwright Eve Ensler, V-Day plans to produce her popular play "The Vagina Monologues" at approximately 500 colleges and universities across the country this February. Members of the intersex community feel that, while the play is mostly funny, insightful and empowering, some portions of it is very hurtful to intersex people. In particular, the play includes a "monologue" about a "wonderful vagina fairy tale," which involves a woman who was born without a vagina. Apparently in an attempt to consol his daughter, the father of this woman declares: "We're gonna get you the best homemade pussy in America. And when you meet your husband he's gonna know we had it made specially for him." Aside from the fact that the idea that women's bodies need to be modified in order to make them desirable to their husbands is misogynist, there is a wide disparities between how the play depicts the genital cuttings in this scene (intersex genital mutilation) and the genital cuttings in Africa (female genital mutilation).

Table of Contents Case report JNEPHROL 2001; 14: 316-318 Renal abnormalities in Mayer-Rokitanski-Küster-Hauser syndrome Carlo Basile , Vittorio De Michele Nephrology and Radiology Units, Hospital of Martina Franca - Italy ABSTRACT: Mayer-Rokitanski-Küster-Hauser (MRKH) syndrome, is a rare disorder characterized by the congenital absence of the uterus and vagina. The prevalence has been reported as one in 4000 ­ 5000 female births. Patients with MRKH syndrome have a 46.XX karyotype and normal secondary sex characteristics. The external genitalia appear normal, but only a shallow vaginal pouch is present. Ovarian function is normal. A 54-year-old woman came to our observation for the treatment of arterial hypertension. Her history involved primary amenorrhea and sterility. She had undergone abdominal and pelvic sonography as a routine screening and they had shown the absence of the uterus, left renal agenesis and a contralateral pelvic kidney. These findings were confirmed by urography and CT scan of the abdomen. Gynecologic examination showed a small vaginal pouch (2 cm). Thus, the diagnosis of MRKH syndrome with associated congenital anomalies of the upper urinary tract was made for the first time in this lady at the age of 54 years. Associated congenital anomalies of the upper urinary tract are reported to occur in 30 ­ 40 % of all cases of MRKH syndrome. No specific figures are available on what percentage of women with missing kidney might also have MRKH syndrome. However, in 40 ­ 50 % of patients with renal agenesis, an associated genital anomaly has been found.

MAYER-ROKITANSKY-KUSTER-HAUSER SYNDROME Clinical Information: The patient is a 16 year old white female who had undergone normal development of secondary sex characteristics, yet remained amenorrheic. Her pelvic exam was notable for pain, and the cervix was not visualized on speculum exam. Hormonal tests (estradiol, FSH, LH, TSH, prolactin) were all within normal limits for an adolescent female in the follicular stage. This enabled the physician to rule out androgen insensitivity (testicular feminization), and suggest that a pituitary tumor was not the cause of amenorrhea. An ultrasound exam was attempted (study not available). Transabdominally, the uterus was not identified. An endovaginal US exam could not be performed, secondary to pain. She was referred to MR for evaluation of the pelvic organs. Radiographic Findings: View MRKH Syndrome Images MRI of the abdomen and pelvis: T1 axial and T2 axial of the pelvis were obtained, confirming the diagnosis of MRKH syndrome.
