Who We Are Resume Why are we doing this? Between the two of us, we have 70 years of experience with dissociation of the human mind, the process which leads to Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD). We have been there. We have seen it, both from the inside and from the outside. To be of any use, the facts we have learned about the cause and treatment of MPD must be in the hands of both those persons with the disorder and their therapists. Use of this Website allows us to get that information directly into the hands of those who need it the most. What we write here has been proven over and over again to be useful for the alleviation of this very disabling mental disorder. What we write to you by e-mail can be tailored to your individual situation. Who are we interested in reaching? One target audience consists of those patients with MPD (called multiples) and their ethical therapists. We prefer to deal with those multiples who are the most dissociated and disabled but who want to get well. By "well," we mean psychologically integrated. Their therapists must be educated in basic psychological principles, ethical, and willing to learn new views and procedures. No training programs are teaching what we have found to be both safe and effective. We would like to remedy that in this way.

The authors write from a humanist position. They believe that alters are generated during childhood by extreme levels of abuse. The authors examine the alters in terms of personality types (core essence, non-dominant, clusters, etc.) Under the proper conditions of therapy, the alters act as a single "inner family" and leave the original personality as a unit.

If you are serious about being open minded and examining evidence that may refute your position, you may find my experience a counter example to the social construction theory of DID. I was raped by my brothers and their friends when I was nine, and my brother repeated it numerous times. My memory of the first experience has been continuous, those for the subsequent ones more vague (but confirmed by my brother). This happened in 1960. In college I became aware that I was nearly totally amnesiac for the years from 9 to 14, and had extensive amnesia for many parts of the high school years; this became obvious to me when I realized how impoverished my personal memories were compared to those of friends. Between then and now I became a scientist (currently a full professor at a big 10 university), had numerous episodes of depression (which went undiagnosed for a long time), married, divorced, remarried in 1982 and now have a family of two children and a wonderful husband. My depressive episodes always had a quality of "happening to someone else" about them; this is recorded in various journal entries I have made at different times. In 1997 during my last episode of depression I became aware of voices in my head arguing about things I was trying to do; the sensation was that an "observer I" was listening to a child's voice of whining helpless hopelessness, and a adult woman's voice trying to urge her to action and scold her.

"About Multiple Personality Disorder and Dissociation"
"The great French psychiatrist Pierre Janet coined the word dissaggregation about one hundred years ago to identify changes in consciousness which disturbed the normal, well-integrated functions of identity, memory and thought in several of his patients. This term was later translated from the French as dissociation Most clinicians believe that dissociative processes exist on a continuum. At one end are mild dissociative experiences common to most people (such as daydreaming or highway hypnosis). At the other extreme is severe, chronic dissociation which may result in serious impairment or inability to function. There is a wide range of experiences in between. Some people with MPD can hold highly responsible jobs, contributing to society in a variety of professions, the arts, and public service. To co-workers, neighbors, and others with whom they interact daily, they apparently function normally. The dissociative process may result in a series of discrete states which eventually may take on identities of their own. Often referred to as alternate personalities, these are the internal members of the MPD (DID) system. Changes between these personalities, or states of consciousness, are described as switching. Dissociation and switching may become automatic responses to anxiety and anticipated anxiety, even in non-abusive situations. Even after the traumatic circumstance is long past, the vestigial pattern of defensive dissociation remains. Chronic defensive dissociation may lead to serious dysfunction in work, social and daily activities.

But according to research psychologist Nicholas P. Spanos, Ph.D., Multiple Personality Disorder (recently renamed Dissociative Identity Disorder or DID), is not a 'disease' at all, but a 'social construction' that serves the various purposes of MPD patients, their therapists and elements of society. He recommends that the diagnosis be abandoned. 'Multiple Identities and False Memories: A Sociocognitive Perspective,' published by the American Psychological Association (APA), was written by Dr. Spanos shortly before his death in a plane crash in 1994. It is a wide-ranging and thoroughly documented examination of the scientific literature on the phenomenon of Multiple Personality Disorder and its possible connection to recovered memories of childhood sexual abuse, reports of satanic ritual abuse, past-life regression and claims of alien abduction. One of the common threads running through these phenomena is the use of hypnosis to retrieve 'lost' memories and reveal hidden identities. Dr. Spanos, who was one of the world's leading experts on the study of hypnosis, offers his conclusion that some of the most common beliefs about hypnosis simply are not true.

The Diagnosis of Multiple Personality Disorder: The Debate Among Professionals P. Michelle Campbell Belmont University Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) (American Psychiatric Association, 1994), it will still be referred to as MPD throughout this article since the research and literature reviewed here were published prior to the publication of the DSM-IV. The Overdiagnosis Argument A therapist who merely suspects MPD in a patient can unknowingly elicit its symptoms by providing information about the disorder and by encouraging adoption of those symptoms. A compliant patient can unconsciously manifest multiple personalities when he or she is under hypnosis and is, therefore, suggestible and vulnerable (Bliss, 1988; Greaves, 1980; Spanos et al., 1986). Furthermore, it is likely that these two altered states of consciousness, hypnosis and dissociation, tend to occur more readily and frequently in the same persons. Thus, individuals who can enter hypnotic states quite easily are more likely to dissociate than individuals who cannot. Therefore, it follows that some individuals would be able to manifest multiple personalities when under the suggestion of hypnosis or the influence of a subtly persuasive therapist (Bliss, 1980). Even Freud and Bleuler criticized the concept of genuine multiple personalities because they could use hypnosis to create the phenomenon themselves (Rosenbaum, 1980).

I am not a professional in the psychological field, but neither am I a layperson. I am someone who lives my life as "WE" , therefore somewhat of an expert on Multiple Personality Disorder. The purpose of this page is to dispel certain preconceived notions non-multiples have concerning multiplicity. In my personal opinion, there is a lack of knowledge in general on the subject of MPD. The media, more often that not, gives an outright false impression of MPD, that in turn, only perpetuates the stereotypical beliefs about the disorder. The following pages are my attempt to enlighten and to allow you a chance to look into the world of one multiple and her family. I hope by letting you glimpse into the mirror that holds the reflections of the many "me's" that light will have been shed where the darkness of misinformation was once cast. If you have any suggestions or feedback you can leave a message on one of the Message forums Before you leave, please take just a few seconds and sign my guestbook, so I can know you were here. If you are someone who knows my real name, Please protect my anonymity by only using the handle, Silent Legacy, when referring to me on these pages, whether it is on one of the Message Boards or Guestbooks, or it will have to be deleted. Thanks for your understanding.

What is multiple personality disorder?, Multiple Personality Glossary, A Multiple'sfamily speaks, A Multiple Personality Message Board, Poetry, Links and
http://www.geocities.com/HotSprings/8089/multi.html
Multiple Personality Disorder (Dissociative Identity Disorder) is the existence within a person of two or more distinct personalities. The different personalities are referred to as "alters". Alters may have experienced a distinct personal history, self-image, and identity, including a separate name, as well as age. At least two of these personalities recurrently take control of the person's behavior. For me multiplicity is life, not a definition, but the purpose here is to help the non-multiple gain insight about the inner world of the multiple, so below is the definition the majority of multiples themselves would give you. Multiplicity, simply put, is about hiding, pain and survival, no more, no less. It is a desperate, completely creative, and wonderful survival mechanism. For the child who endures repeated and inescapable abuse, it may be their only escape. I consider myself to be blessed with MPD not cursed. It was a gift from God to me, to ensure my survival in a world that was full of insanity and reason not to survive. That is not to say that being a multiple is a picnic, because it is not. It certainly brings it share of difficulties for me in my life, but what I am saying is, at least I can do life and do it with some degree of mental health because I survived an insane childhood with my sanity. Individuals most likely to develop MPD share several common factors. They have endured repetitive, and often life-threatening abuse during a developmental stage of childhood. The type of abuse can vary or be a combination of physical, extreme emotional, sexual or Satanic Ritual Abuse. The multiple may have a biological predisposition for auto-hypnotic phenomena, or in plain english, a high level of hypnotizablitiy.

Understanding Dissociative Identity Disorder
Welcome to our site about Dissociative Identity Disorder. Our goal is to offer support and understanding not only to people who have DID but to their family and friends. We would also like to educate and bring an awareness about this disorder. Actually, the word "disorder" is not a word we like to use. We think of DID as a life saving gift filled with intelligence, creativity and survival instincts. This site is not intended to diagnose or treat DID! We are not professionals in the mental health arena and only offer our personal opinions and experiences. Please seek help if you are a victim or a survivor of sexual, physical or emotional abuse. Some of our pages may be triggering to some people. Please read cautiously if you have DID/MPD!!!
