This gives an appearance rather like a hamster with food in it's cheeks. Symptoms Sufferers often have a dry mouth and are feverish with headache and difficulty swallowing. It slowly settles and does not usually cause lasting effects. Sometimes, after puberty, it will cause swollen, tender, inflamed testicles and may later cause subfertility in some of those affected. Facts About Mumps For Adults What is mumps? Mumps is an acute viral disease that is spread from person to person by coughing or sneezing. People who have mumps may spread the infection to others, even when they do not have any symptoms or their illness is mild. Prevention There is a vaccine to protect against mumps. The vaccine is frequently given to adults as part of a combination vaccine, called the MMR vaccine, that protects against measles, mumps and rubella. There is also a vaccine that protects only against mumps Symptoms The symptoms of mumps include a low-grade fever and swelling or tenderness of one or more of the salivary glands in the cheeks and under the jaw. Symptoms usually appear between 12 and 25 days after a person has been exposed to the virus. However, about one-third of infected people do not have symptoms. Who should get MMR vaccine? And Octo Barnett looked out over the lab at Massachusetts General Hospital and said, "I will have a computer system for this lab." And contracts were let and work began. But this was the time of Assembly Language and early COBOL, and the Lab System needed better tools. Three young software shepherds named Pappalardo, Greenes and Marble heard a calling and followed it to the basement of the Hospital. There, in the corner of the animal lab, stood a PDP-7, and the creation of a new software system began. The three shepherds obeyed new and unwritten commandments: Thou shalt not declare variable types or file sizes. Thou shalt not KILL, except for globals and variables. Immunization Safety Review: Measles-Mumps-Rubella Vaccine and Autism Immunization is widely regarded as one of the world's most effective tools for protecting public health. In the United States alone, child-vaccination programs have resulted in the elimination of smallpox and polio and rendered once-common, often debilitating, and potentially life-threatening infectious diseasessuch as diphtheria, pertussis, and measlesexceedingly un common. But along with these benefits have come concerns about safety, making some immunization policies a subject of public debate. One such issue is whether or not the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine causes autistic spectrum disorders (ASD), frequently referred to simply as autism. The MMR vaccine, which comprises three vaccines given in a single shot, has been extremely successful in virtually eliminating measles, mumps, and rubella in the United States. Measles cases, for example, dropped from over 400,000 per year in the pre-vaccine era to only 100 in 1999. However, these diseases remain a serious threat in other parts of the world where children are not routinely vaccinated. Measles alone resulted in over a million deaths in children around the world last year. Some parents and researchers are concerned though that the MMR vaccine might cause ASD. Autistic spectrum disorders are incurable, permanent diseases that result in serious developmental problems in children. Although scientists generally agree that most cases of ASD result from events that occur in the prenatal period or shortly after birth, there is considerable concern because autistic symptoms typically do not emerge until the child's second yearabout the same time the MMR vaccine is first administered. In addition, there are concerns that the introduction of wide-scale use of MMR coincides with an apparent increase in the incidence of autism.

With nearly 7,000 square feet of exhibit space on two floors, the expanded Museum can better illustrate the medical story of the American Civil War. It is a story of care and healing, courage and devotion amidst the death and destruction of war. It is also a story of major advances that changed medicine forever. Through the dedication, innovation and devotion of Civil War surgeons and medical support staff on both sides of the conflict, the foundation for today's modern military medicine was laid. Their tenacity and compassion to heal stemmed a death rate that could have easily been twice the 620,000. Throughout the exhibits are special blue panels that highlight the military career of Union Private Peleg Bradford. In his own words, Bradford tells us his thoughts on the war, the condition of his regiment and the effect his enlistment had on the family he left behind. Medical School Education As the Civil War began, the practice of medicine was emerging from the "heroic era", with its theory of bringing a balance to the humors of the body. Medical practitioners had no knowledge of germ theory or antiseptic practices. Both discoveries were still years away. Over 40 medical schools existed in America before the war, and apprenticeships with established physicians were also common. The usual course of study in a medical school consisted of two terms of six-month lectures, with the second term often being a repeat of the first. Featured objects in this gallery include medical school documents, teaching models, and mid-nineteenth century medical instruments.
