Parents reassured on vaccine

MMR vaccination can prevent disabling and even fatal diseases
Medical researchers have given parents the strongest reassurance yet that the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine will not cause their children to develop autism. And they emphasised that there is no link between bowel disease and the jab. The BBC's Fergus Walsh: "Two major studies have ruled out any link with autism or bowel disease" Experts have also warned if confidence in the vaccine, known as MMR, does not return, new epidemics of childhood diseases could break out in as little as three years. Two new studies published in "The Lancet" on Friday show there is no link between the introduction of the vaccine and the sharp rise in autism diagnosed in children. Doctors and government health experts are now hoping the new findings will convince parents who have shunned the jabs that they are safe. 'Mothers must trust MMR' Professor Brent Taylor, of the Royal Free Medical School in north London, which carried out the research, said it was important mothers began to trust MMR again.

Revised March 9, 1995
IMMUNIZATION INFORMATION - MUMPS
OVERVIEW The Disease
Mumps is a common childhood disease. The most obvious sign of mumps is swelling of the cheeks and jaw, caused by inflammation in the salivary glands. There is usually fever and headache too. But mumps can also cause more serious illness. It can cause deafness. About 1 child in every 10 who gets mumps also gets meningitis (an inflammation of the coverings of the brain and spinal cord). Occasionally the disease also causes encephalitis, which is inflammation of the brain itself. Usually, the child recovers without permanent damage. About 1 out of every 4 teenage or adult men who get mumps develops a painful swelling of the testicles. People get mumps through contact with others who are already infected. It can be spread by coughing, sneezing, or simply talking. Before a vaccine was available, nearly every child got mumps. Now the number of cases is much lower. However, children who are not immunized are still very likely to get the disease. Mumps Immunization
Mumps vaccine is usually given together with measles and rubella vaccines in a shot called MMR.

Mumps Self-Care Instructions WHAT IS IT?
Mumps is an infectious disease that causes swelling of the saliva-producing glands near the ears. The swelling can occur on one or both sides. WHAT CAUSES MUMPS?
It is caused by a virus. Symptoms usually appear 14 to 21 days after exposure to the virus. WHAT ARE ITS COMMON SYMPTOMS?
The most common symptom is painful swelling in front of and below the ears. Often, there is pain when eating or moving the jaw. Some people have headaches, loss of appetite, fever and a tired feeling about a day before the swelling. One side of the face usually swells before the other. In males past puberty, a problem that is associated with mumps is orchitis (swelling of the testicles). IS IT CONTAGIOUS?
Yes. Mumps is spread by contact with the saliva of someone who has the disease. It is contagious until all the swelling is gone. Mumps occurs year-round, but is more common in the winter and spring. HOW LONG WILL IT LAST?
Mumps can last 7-10 days; however, the length of the illness varies. WHAT CAN YOU DO IF YOU HAVE MUMPS?

What is mumps?
Mumps is caused by the paramyxovirus . Of the common childhood illnesses, it is the disease with the longest incubation period and can take as long as three weeks from infection to outbreak.
Nowadays, most children are vaccinated against mumps. The virus is contagious for about a week before the disease breaks out, which can make it difficult to track down the source of infection.
How do you catch mumps?
Mumps is a viral infection spread by airborne droplets from the nose or throat. However, it is the least contagious of the five major children's diseases and requires close contact before infection can occur.
Though small children can get mumps, the disease is most common after the age of two.
