  • Any teenager or adult who gets the mumps should receive medical attention, and so should any child who also experiences difficulty hearing or who has convulsions, neck stiffness, severe headache, or great weakness. Homeopathic medicines are often effective in treating the average case of mumps, and help reduce the chances of complications.
Aconitum: Useful at the beginning stages of mumps, these children have a sudden onset of fever, restlessness, anxiety, and great thirst. BELLADONNA: These children have a noticeably flushed face and throbbing headache. They have swollen glands that are hot to touch. They are drowsy but have difficulty sleeping. Mercurius: Right-sided swelling of throat glands typify children who will benefit from this medicine. They also have profuse and offensive salivation and perspiration. PHYTOLACCA: When children with mumps have stony hard throat glands, especially on the right side, this medicine should be considered. The throat pains may extend to the ear, and they may have an irresistable desire to bite their teeth together. One of their characteristic symptoms is pain from sticking og out their tongue. They tend to be worse in cold or wet weather.

MUMPS Last modified: Tuesday, March 12, 2002 Short for M assachusetts General Hospital U tility M ulti p rogramming S ystem, a general-purpose programming language developed in the late 1960s. MUMPS is similar to other procedural languages developed in this period, such as BASIC FORTRAN , and C . A MUMPS standard was approved by ANSI in 1977. Although MUMPS has never achieved the popularity level of other languages such as C and BASIC, there is still an active community of MUMPS developers. Since about 1993, there has been a growing trend to change the name from MUMPS to M or M-Technology.

Mumps
Definition: Mumps is an acute , contagious, viral disease that causes painful enlargement of the salivary or parotid glands.
Alternative Names: Epidemic parotitis
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: The mumps are caused by a virus which is spread from person-to-person by respiratory droplets or direct contact with articles that have been contaminated with infected saliva. The parotid glands (the salivary glands between the ear and the jaw) are often swollen. Unvaccinated children between the ages of 2 and 12 are most commonly infected, but the infection can occur in other age groups. Other organs may be involved, including the testes , the central nervous system , and the pancreas. The incubation period is usually 12 to 24 days.

Disease Index NJ InTouch What You Should Know About. . . Mumps What is Mumps? Mumps is a generalized acute viral disease caused by the mumps virus. This virus multiplies in the nose, throat, and lymph nodes; salivary glands are most often directly affected. More rarely, the pancreas, reproductive organs, and the brain can be affected. Who gets Mumps? Anyone not previously vaccinated with at least one dose of a mumps containing vaccine on or after the first birthday or who has not developed mumps previously is susceptible. Mumps outbreaks have occurred in settings where large numbers of children or young adults congregate in close contact such as schools, child care centers, military services, colleges, and other institutions. How is Mumps spread? A susceptible person becomes infected with mumps after being exposed to an infected person's respiratory droplets or saliva. What are the symptoms of Mumps? One third of persons have inapparent or no symptoms. For those persons exhibiting symptoms, they may include non-specific signs such as malaise, headache, appetite loss, or low grade fever. More specific symptoms may last about one week and include swelling of the salivary glands, tenderness in the jaw, and earache. How soon do symptoms occur?

ABSTRACT Background It has been suggested that vaccination against measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) is a cause of autism. Methods We conducted a retrospective cohort study of all children born in Denmark from January 1991 through December 1998. The cohort was selected on the basis of data from the Danish Civil Registration System, which assigns a unique identification number to every live-born infant and new resident in Denmark. MMR-vaccination status was obtained from the Danish National Board of Health. Information on the children's autism status was obtained from the Danish Psychiatric Central Register, which contains information

Years ago, before effective prevention, measles, mumps, and rubella were common, serious childhood diseases. Even though measles, mumps, and rubella are not seen often today, it is important to know about them so you can help safeguard your family and yourself. Measles Measles passes easily from person to person. At one time, as many as 200,000-500,000 people contracted measles each year in the United States. Measles causes a spreading rash with red spots on the skin, and usually fever, swollen eyes, sensitivity to light, coughing, and itching. Measles can last as long as 2 weeks and can cause pneumonia and ear infections.

    • Measles, Mumps, and rubella vaccination and bowel problems or developmental regression in children with autism: population study. This paper by Taylor et al in the [Feb 16 2003] BMJ adds to the growing body of evidence that show no involvement of MMR vaccine in the development of autism. The authors report on their investigation of 473 and conclude that their data shows neither a "new variant' form of MMR-associated autism nor evidence of MMR contributing to the onset of autism. BMJ 2003;324:393-6.
    • MMR and autistic enterocolitis: consistent epidemiological failure to find an association. In a News & Commentary in Molecular Psychiatry [Feb 2003], Fombonne and Cook review a recent paper by Taylor et al on MMR and Autistic Enterocolitis. Fombonne and Cook review Taylor's paper as well as the hypothesis by Wakefield et al that speculated about a connection between MMR and autism and ask, "How many more well-powered epidemiological investigations ... will be necessary for this hypothesis to be completely discarded?". Discussion of viral pathogenesis and disease, epidemiology, prevention and treatment. INTRODUCTION Infections with measles, mumps and rubella viruses are confined to man and occur worldwide. They are all spread primarily via the aerosol route. Each of these viruses exists as a single serotype . MMR (mumps, measles, rubella) vaccine contains live, attenuated forms of all three of these viruses. Measles and mumps viruses belong to the Paramyxovirus Family and are enveloped, non-segmented, negative-sense RNA viruses with helical symmetry (figure 1). (Rubella virus is a member of the Togavirus Family and is an enveloped, non-segmented, positive-sense RNA virus with icosahedral symmetry.) Figure 1 Paramyxovirus structure PARAMYXOVIRUS FAMILY

    The Disease
Mumps is a common childhood disease. The most obvious sign of mumps is swelling of the cheeks and jaw, caused by inflammation in the salivary glands. There is usually fever and headache too. But mumps can also cause more serious illness. It can cause deafness. About 1 child in every 10 who gets mumps also gets meningitis (an inflammation of the coverings of the brain and spinal cord). Occasionally the disease also causes encephalitis, which is inflammation of the brain itself. Usually, the child recovers without permanent damage. About 1 out of every 4 teenage or adult men who get mumps develops a painful swelling of the testicles. People get mumps through contact with others who are already infected. It can be spread by coughing, sneezing, or simply talking. Before a vaccine was available, nearly every child got mumps. Now the number of cases is much lower. However, children who are not immunized are still very likely to get the disease.
    Mumps Immunization
Mumps vaccine is usually given together with measles and rubella vaccines in a shot called MMR. You can read about mumps, measles, and rubella vaccines here.
