Mumps
Also known as:
Epidemic parotitis. Introduction:
Mumps has been a common disease for centuries. Hippocrates wrote about it almost 2500 years ago. It’s not all that serious an illness. It doesn’t even affect male fertility the way that most people think. So why was a vaccine developed? Well, about 1/3 of the men who get mumps develop exquisite pain and swelling in one or both testicles, which then shrivel up and remain permanently atrophied. Perhaps that had something to do with it!

Egg Allergies And The MMR (Measles-Mumps-Rubella) Vaccine
I read that you should not vaccinate for MMR if your child has an egg allergy. I found out that my 17-month baby girl gets a rash from egg whites. What kind of problems can occur when she receives the MMR vaccine? Should she not have it?
The current measles-mumps-rubella vaccine (MMR) does not contain a significant amount of egg proteins (but two other vaccines do). As recently as 1994, the AAP recommended skin testing of all children with severe egg allergies before they received the MMR. This is no longer necessary. Even those with dramatic egg allergies are extremely unlikely to have an

    Definition
An acute, contagious, febrile disease characterized by inflammation of the parotid glands and other salivary glands (mumps glands). Usually occurs in children between the ages of 3 and 16, but sometimes seen in adults also. But when it does occur in adults, the complications can be quite serious.

    Symptoms
Onset is gradual. There may be chilliness, generally not feeling well, loss of appetite headache , pain below the ears, moderate fever (101-102 F), or higher followed by swelling of one or both mumps glands (parotid glands). Usually swelling in one gland is subsiding as the other swells. Swelling is below and in front of the ear. The lobe of the ear is sometimes pushed forward, surrounding tissues are edematous, and the features may be greatly distorted. Movements of the jaw are painful and restricted. Saliva may be increased or diminished. In a third of cases only one gland is affected. Occasionally the glands seem to escape and the swelling is confined to the submaxillary gland (below the jaw). Swelling usually lasts 5-7 days.

mumps AND SWELLING OF THE TESTES — AFFECT FERTILITY? Dear Alice,. I havea question about mumps I had mumps while I was thirteenyears-old.
http://www.goaskalice.columbia.edu/0595.html
Dear Alice, I have a question about mumps: I had mumps while I was thirteen-years-old. I remembered that because of embarrassment. I was afraid to tell my parents about the inflammation (swelling of the testicles) at the same time I had mumps. I did not have treatment for the swelling of my testicles due to mumps. Later, the swelling went away about the same time as my mumps. Although I still can produce semen, I am deeply disturbed whether that swelling could have hindered my fertility (i.e., no production of sperm due to the blockage of the sperm channels).
Dear Concerned about the future,
Alice

New evidence suggests that this highly contagious disease, once considered more dreaded than smallpox, no longer circulates in the United States. Small numbers of cases are imported from economically advantaged nations (such as Germany and Japan), as well as such countries as China, Cyprus, Croatia, and Zimbabwe, but disease has reached a record low. This public health success has occurred because vaccination with one dose of measles vaccine is at a record high and most U.S. students live in states that require them to receive a second dose.

What Is Mumps?
Mumps is a contagious disease caused by a virus. Mumps usually occurs in children between the ages of five and fifteen, but is more likely to cause serious problems in adults. There is no cure for mumps, but it can be prevented with vaccination.
How Is Mumps Spread?
Mumps is transmitted from person to person by direct contact with saliva and mucous from the nose and throat of infected individuals. Mumps is contagious from six days before until nine days after the glands start swelling.
How Do I Know If I Have Mumps? (Common Symptoms)
Symptoms of mumps include fever, swelling and pain in the salivary glands, usually the big ones near the ear and the jaw. Approximately one-third of infected people do not exhibit symptoms. Other symptoms include headache, stiff neck, and loss of appetite. Less commonly, mumps can lead to hearing loss, meningitis, and the swelling of ovaries or testicles.

At the Spring 2001 meehttp://ting of the American Society of Pediatric Otolaryngology (ASPO), Dr. Nigel Pashley presented results of his protocol for intralesional injections of the mumps vaccine to treat RRP. His reports of success coupled with anecdotal reports of success from RRP patients and parents are encouraging and justify this therapy as a credible adjunct treatment for RRP. N, Pahley, 2001. Can Mumps Vaccine Induce Remission in Recurrent Respiratory Papilloma? Reports from issues of the RRP Newsletter: Thirty-two year old Joe from Ohio, has not had a recurrence of respiratory papillomas since May 1997. He was diagnosed in September of 1994 and was having surgery about every 3-4 weeks for a period of time after that. Joe tried I3C and also PDT with no response. In April of 1997 he traveled to Denver, Colorado to have a mumps vaccine treatment from Dr. Nigel Pashley . He had a second treatment in May of 1997 and has been in remission ever since.

Causes and risks The mumps are caused by the paramyxovirus, which is spread from person to person by saliva droplets or direct contact with articles that have been contaminated with infected saliva. The parotid glands (the salivary glands between the ear and the jaw) are usually involved. Children between the ages of 2 and 12 are most commonly infected, but the infection can occur in other age groups. In older people, other organs may become involved including the testes, the central nervous system, the pancreas, the prostate, the breasts, and other organs. The incubation period is usually 12 to 24 days. Prevention MMR immunization (vaccine) protects against measles, mumps and rubella and should be given to children 15 months old. The vaccination is repeated in some locations between 4 to 6 years of age, or between 11 and 12 years of age if not previously given. See also immunizations - general overview.
