Scottish Parliament Public Petitions Committee Tuesday 2 October 2001 Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (PE398) The Convener: Helen McDade: I have with me Linda McLean, the mother of a severely affected 15-year-old girl who has been ill for three years, and Alan Stroud, a 17-year-old sufferer of ME, who has been ill for three years. I hope that the committee will appreciate that Alan had to make a lot of effort to be here this morning. I am the mother of an 11-year-old girl who has been ill with ME for five and a half years. She has attended school for about 25 per cent of that period. When she became ill at five and a half, she wanted to be a ballet dancer and join the rainbow guides and the brownies. She wanted to go swimming and take up gymnastics and horse riding. She is now 11 and has not done any of those activities. Her childhood ended when she was six. Many children are like her and Linda McLean represents another such child. We are here today because ME sufferers and their families are desperate. Members of the committee are one of our last shots. It is estimated that 15,000 Scots in Scotland have ME. That is more than the number of people with multiple sclerosis. Of that number, about 2,000 are children and of those children, 25 per cent are severely affected, which means that they are housebound or bedridden. Unable to stand noise, they may live in a darkened, soundproof room because of hypersensitivity and they may not receive support from anyone except, hopefully, their families. Many people live with such suffering.

MYALGIC ENCEPHALOMYELITIS IN S. W. SCOTLAND: A CASE-CONTROL STUDY MEASURING ELF EM FIELD EXPOSURE Summary In the ME case homes mean magnetic field strengths (87nT; SD 46) did not differ significantly from controls (99nT; SD 265). Mean electric fields however were almost twice as high (22.7V/m; SD 39.2) compared with controls (13.0V/m; SD 15.5), and this difference was significant (p=0.035). Unusually, 57 percent of cases (35/61) lived in homes on or next to corners, near the ends of cul-de-sac streets, or in end-terraces where the electric cable feed entered the block. These were also the sites of highest electric fields. The significance of this finding is not clear. These results, though from a relatively small sample, suggest that ME may be associated with weak chronic exposure to ELF electric fields. The study gives support to recent occupational studies also finding over-representation of adult cancer subtypes where occupational electric field exposure was elevated. The curious correlation between corner homes and cul de sac homes with ME cases in this sample, (which could not have arisen through selection bias), needs further investigation, and a larger study is needed to confirm these results. INTRODUCTION In Ayrshire an outbreak in West Kilbride was described (Fegan, Behan et al., 1983) affecting 22 patients between January 1980 and June 1983, mainly female. The most characteristic symptom was extreme exhaustion, particularly after exercise. No clear aetiology or diagnostic marker for ME has yet been isolated. Though according to Ramsay (1989) the disorder is often associated with Coxsackie B viral infection (which was found in 18 of the 22 West Kilbride patients), it is not clear whether the viral insult is post-opportunistic, since no clear infectious pathway has been isolated.

RYLL, M.D. Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine Department of International Medicine University of California Davis, California HISTORY In the spring and summer of 1975, there was a major, severe epidemic of a communical, apparent viral disease at the Mercy San Juan Hospital in Carmicheal, a suburb of Sacramento, California. It occurred in February, and the bulk of the disease happened between July and November of 1975. Cases continued to occur, although few, until 1978 The epidemic involved all departments of the hospital. It was equally severe in all departments. I was appointed chairmen of a committee to investigate the outbreak. At the time, I feared that there might be fatalities and so Asked that the CDC (Communicable Disease Center, Atlanta, Georgia) become involved. An epidemiologist fro there spent a week at the hospital. Another epidemiologist from the State came for the day. Cultures were obtained for all known viruses, bacteria, and rickettsiae, and all were negative. The disease was apparently due to a new agent of disease. At the time, we did a literature search and found three reports of outbreaks that were called EPIDERMIC PHLEBODYNIA (meaning painful veins). While the disease at Mercy San Juan was somewhat similar, it included many more features that were subscribed in epidermic phlebodynia and so at the time, I believed it was not the same disease. Later , additional literature search showed that the disease was very similar to epidermic neuromyasthenia/ myalgic encephalomyelitis. But toublingly, very few if any, vascular features were mentioned.
