Study of Mycoplasmal Infections in Gulf War Veterans Synopsis: This study is designed to find if there is an association between mycoplasma infections and the development of symptoms and illnesses experienced by Gulf War veterans. Overall Project Objective: This study is designed to find evidence for Mycoplasmal infections in symptomatic Operation Desert Storm veterans, by comparing the rate of seroconversion in symptomatic veterans as compared to healthy Gulf veterans and by culturing for Mycoplasma organisms in symptomatic and healthy Gulf veterans. Project Summary
Title:
Testing for Mycoplasmal Infection Replicability of Nucleoprotein Gene Tracking and Forensic Polymerase Chain Reaction Synopsis: This study seeks to determine the reliability of three tests use for Mycoplasmal infection, which was postulated as a possible cause of unexplained illnesses in Gulf War Veterans. Overall Project Objective: To determine the reliability of three molecular biology-based tests for Mycoplasma fermentans (incognitus strain) in human pure blood mononuclear cells. These tests include 1) "usual" polymerase chain reaction procedure (UPCR), 2) an optimized chelex polymerase chain reaction (OCPCR) procedure, and 3) a nucleoprotein gene tracking (NGT) procedure. Status/Results to Date: The analyses have been completed, and indicate that there is no greater than chance reliability between laboratories and within laboratories, for all three tests. Currently, disagreements among the investigators regarding the interpretation of results remain. An independent group of experts reviewed the protocol, data, results, and a draft manuscript and concluded that additional research should be conducted before these data could be adequately interpreted. Mycoplasmal Arthritis What is it? A form of arthritis that is found in rats. What causes it? It has been suggested that poor cage sanitation and abrasions of the extremities are factors involved in helping the organism to get into the joints. Since the organism appears to be of low virulence, the healthiness immune system of a rat may be a major factor in the outcome of infection.
Where does it occur? This form of Mycoplasma resides in the pharynx (throat), middle ears, and lungs of rats. Although it is often considered to be the principal agent involved in arthritis in rats, the disease has been rarely reported.
How is it transmitted?

A majority of Autism patients have systemic bacterial, viral and fungal infections that may play an important part in their illnesses. We found that immediate family members of veterans diagnosed with Gulf War Illnesses (GWI) often complain of fatiguing illnesses, and upon analysis they report similar signs and symptoms as their veteran family members, except that their children are often diagnosed with Autism. Since a relatively common finding in GWI patients is a bacterial infection due to Mycoplasma fermentans , we examined military families (149 patients: 42 veterans, 40 spouses, 32 other relatives and 35 children with at least one family complaint of illness) selected from a group of 110 veterans with GWI who tested positive (~42%) for mycoplasmal infections. Consistent with previous results, over 80% of GWI patients who were positive for blood mycoplasmal infections had only one

1:34 PM We have a male house finch that's been unusually tame this year. He comes to the feeders when we're near them and chirps at us when it's empty. The other day when I was out puttering in the yard, he let me get within a foot of him on the finch feeder.
The reason was soon apparent: He's completely blind in one eye and can hardly see out of the other one. I caught him and took pictures of him before releasing him again. If you're squeamish, you might not want to look at them: [ HYPERLINK
I'd heard about this eye problem in the finch populations, and I'd seen some finches from a distance last year which appeared to be blind on one side; this is the first time I'd seen it up close, and it isn't pretty.
Here's information on the cause of this as well as information on preventing its spread (keep your feeders clean!):
U. of Nebraska: [ HYPERLINK

Cornell University: [ HYPERLINK Cornell is doing an ongoing study on this problem as a part of its Project Feederwatch: [ HYPERLINK Poor fella...As easy as it was for me to catch him, I bet a cat will get him soon. We can't put him through a regiment of medications, so I didn't know what to do other than release him again.

Sera prior to and after deployment to South West Asia are tested for antibody to M. fermentans, M. genitalium, and M. penetrans. (2) Blood, urine, oropharyngeal, and rectal samples in 100 consecutive veterans undergoing evaluation at WRAMC and 100 asymptomatic veterans are tested for evidence of mycoplasmal infection by culture, serology and PCR.

Antibiotic Therapy for Chronic Chlamydial Infections Patients with Chlamydia species infections or combinations of Chlamydia and Mycoplasma infections appear to do well on long-term combinations of antibiotics plus nutritional and nutraceutical support [1,2]. Examples of antibiotics that have proven useful for treatment of replicating and nonreplicating forms of Chlamydia are discussed here [3]. For replicating, active infections investigators have recommend starting with amoxicillin (initially at 500 mg/day and if tolerated, this dose should be increased to 2X 500 mg/day) [3].

The Mycoplasmas
Introduction: The first of these curious organisms was isolated in 1898 by the French scientists, Nocard and Roux from the pleural fluids of cattle with an infectious disease called bovine pleuropneumonia. After the discovery of Pleuropneumonia organisms, numerous other organisms resembling them were reported. These organisms were called pleuropneumonia-like organisms or PPLO. These organisms are now referred to as mycoplasmas, and they are the smallest and simplest free-living bacteria lacking a rigid cell wall. Certain Mycoplasma species are important pathogens in animal, plant and insect species. In humans mycoplasmal infections have only recently been associated with certain acute and chronic illnesses where they may function as causative agents, cofactors or opportunistic infections that cause patient morbidity. Although various Mycoplasma species are commonly found as commensals in the oral cavity and at other superficial sites, certain species can penetrate into blood and tissue and cause morbidity. For example
