Acute Transverse Myelitis
A syndrome, not a disease, in which acute inflammation affects gray and white matter in one or more adjacent thoracic segments. Often, the cause is unknown, but some cases follow nonspecific viral infection or vaccination, suggesting an immunologic cause; others are associated with vasculitis, use of amphetamines or IV heroin, Lyme disease, syphilis, TB, or parasitic or fungal agents.
Symptoms and Signs
Usually, ascending weakness and numbness of the feet and legs and difficulty voiding develop over a few days; they may progress over several more days to become severe, usually with global sensorimotor paraplegia below the lesion, urinary retention, and loss of bowel control. Occasionally, posterior column functions are spared, at least initially. Local back pain, headache, and stiff neck may be present. The syndrome occasionally recurs.
Diagnosis and Treatment
CSF examination may show monocytes and a slightly increased protein content. MRI can rule out expanding extramedullary lesions. MRI or myelography may show swelling of the cord and occasionally a subarachnoid block at the level of the lesion. If myelography is used, supine and prone visualization is necessary to rule out a vascular malformation. Blood serologies are abnormal in rare cases associated with collagen vascular disease.

Transverse Myelitis is a rare neurological disorder that is part of a spectrum of neuroimmunologic diseases of the central nervous system. Other disorders in this spectrum include, Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis (ADEM); Recurrent Optic Neuritis, and Recurrent Optic Neuritis and Recurrent TM (Devics or Neuromyelitis Optica). The membership of The Transverse Myelitis Association includes persons with all of these disorders, their family members and caregivers and the medical professionals who treat people with these disorders. The Transverse Myelitis Association was established in 1994 as a not-for-profit organization dedicated to advocacy for those who have these rare neuroimmunologic diseases. Mission The Transverse Myelitis Association facilitates support and networking opportunities amongst TM families; provides educational information; functions as a clearinghouse for articles and research literature about the TM diagnosis; and investigates, advocates for and supports research and innovative treatment efforts. Programs The TMA publishes a newsletter for our members twice a year, which contains articles by physicians and health care providers who treat persons with TM. There are also articles written by people with TM. A membership directory is published and distributed annually. The TMA assists in the development of local support groups and is involved in various fund-raising efforts, such as Reading for Rachel, to raise awareness and funds for TM research. The TMA supports and conducts various symposiums and workshops involving both professionals and patients for the exchange of information regarding TM research and treatment strategies for persons with TM.

It may occur alone or in combination with demyelination in other parts of the nervous system. Onset of the disorder is sudden. Symptoms may include low back pain, spinal cord dysfunction, muscle spasms, a general feeling of discomfort, headache, loss of appetite, and numbness or tingling in the legs. Transverse myelitis may be caused by viral infections, spinal cord injuries, immune reactions, or insufficient blood flow through the blood vessels in the spinal cord. It may also occur as a complication of such disorders as optic neuromyelitis, multiple sclerosis, smallpox, measles, or chickenpox. Is there any treatment?

Was ist Transverse Myelitis (TM)?

About Myelitis Touching the derivation of the name Myelitis, I confess
myself, with sorrow, equally at fault. Among a multitude of opinions upon this delicate point- some acute, some learned, some sufficiently the reverse I am able to select nothing which ought to be considered satisfactory. Modified text originally written by Edgar Allan Poe.

Personal Information and Accomplishments

When Things Happened
In the late afternoon of Friday, February 5, 1999, Cody was at 6th grade basketball practice in Albuquerque when she began to feel excessively tired, had difficulty catching her breath, developed a pounding headache and her legs felt heavy, numb and “tingly.” She was taken to the emergency room at Presbyterian Hospital and sent home after evaluation.
The next morning, Feb. 6, Cody was unable to walk and returned to the hospital, paralyzed below her chest. The mysterious symptoms were finally diagnosed as Transverse Myelitis, a rare but often paralyzing and sometimes fatal
spinal cord inflammation.
It was April 1999 before Cody returned home, paralyzed and in a wheelchair but energized in her quest to build awareness of TM, promote cooperation among researchers and cure paralysis. Her accomplishments and activities have won national acclaim.
Cody and her foundation have been featured in People magazine, on CBS 48 Hours and has appeared continuously in other national, regional, local and trade media.

    What is transverse myelitis?
Transverse myelitis is a neurological disorder caused by inflammation across both sides of one level, or segment, of the spinal cord. The term myelitis refers to inflammation of the spinal cord; transverse simply describes the position of the inflammation, that is, across the width of the spinal cord. Attacks of inflammation can damage or destroy myelin, the fatty insulating substance that covers nerve cell fibers. This damage causes nervous system scars that interrupt communications between the nerves in the spinal cord and the rest of the body. Symptoms of transverse myelitis include a loss of spinal cord function over several hours to several weeks. What usually begins as a sudden onset of lower back pain, muscle weakness, or abnormal sensations in the toes and feet can rapidly progress to more severe symptoms, including paralysis, urinary retention, and loss of bowel control. Although some patients recover from transverse myelitis with minor or no residual problems, others suffer permanent impairments that affect their ability to perform ordinary tasks of daily living. Most patients will have only one episode of transverse myelitis; a small percentage may have a recurrence.
