Neuralgias
Overview Symptoms Treatment Prevention Definition: Pains which follow the paths of specific nerves.
Alternative Names: Nerve pain; Postherpetic neuralgia
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: The causes of neuralgias are varied. Chemicals can cause nerve irritation. Inflammation, trauma (including surgery), compression by adjacent structures (tumors or inflamed tissues), and infections can all lead to neuralgias. In many cases, however, the cause is unknown or unidentifiable. Neuralgias are most common in elderly persons, but they can occur at any age.
Trigeminal neuralgia
is the most common form of neuralgia. It affects the main sensory nerve of the face, the trigeminal nerve ("trigeminal" literally means "three origins", referring to the division of the nerve into three branches). This condition involves sudden and short attacks of severe pain on one side of the face, along one of the areas supplied by the trigeminal nerve. The pain attacks may be severe enough to cause a facial grimace, which is classically referred to as a painful tic (tic douloureux).

Trigeminal neuralgia
tic douloureux ) is the most common form of neuralgia. It affects mostly women, usually those older than 50 years. It involves sudden, severe pain on one side of the face, in one of the areas supplied by the trigeminal nerve. The pain may be severe enough to cause a facial tic . The cause is occasionally a blood vessel or small tumor pressing on the nerve, or disorders such as multiple sclerosis . Certain movements such as speech, chewing, swallowing, or similar movements, or touching an area of the face, may trigger a spasm of excruciating pain. In some cases, even a breeze blowing on the affected area can cause pain.
Some neuralgias occur as a result of herpes infections such as shingles (postherpetic neuralgia). This can produce a constant burning pain, worsened by movement or contact with the affected area. The pain can be debilitating long after signs of the original herpes infection have disappeared.

NEURALGIAS
Neuralgia means burning, numbness, and pain that extends along one or more nerves. A nerve is a cord-like bundle of fibers through which sensation and motor impulses pass between the brain and the body. Because nerve fibers are found throughout the body neuralgia may occur in any nerve. Neuralgia or neuropathic pain is caused by injury, irritation or deterioration of nerves. Neuralgias can occur as a result of: * inflammation * infections such as herpes, malaria or syphilis * surgery * nerve compression from tumors * irritation of spinal nerves * vitamin B-12 deficiency * deterioration of the nerves due to aging or hereditary conditions * brain injury such a stroke and * diseases such as diabetes, thyroid conditions, pernicious anemia, and shingles Neuralgia pain feels different from most other types of pain. It is often described as sharp, knifelike, stabbing, or burning. The pain tends to be constant. A person may experience: * cluster headaches * pain radiating through the face or jaw * pain at the back of head, in the feet, and in the throat or tongue and

NEURALGIAS
Neuralgia means burning, numbness, and pain that extends along one or more nerves. A nerve is a cord-like bundle of fibers through which sensation and motor impulses pass between the brain and the body. Neuralgia may occur in any nerve. There are several disorders in which this kind of pain keeps coming back. These major disorders include: * cluster headaches * pain radiating through the face, or jaw * pain at the back of head, in the feet, and in the throat or tongue and * sciatica, which affects the lower back, buttocks, and legs Some of the possible CAUSES of neuralgia include: * vitamin B-12 deficiency * chronic diseases such as diabetes and multiple sclerosis * infectious diseases such as herpes, malaria, and syphilis and * tumors Attacks of pain often occur suddenly. There may be long periods between attacks. A person may suffer from anxiety and fear of the next attack. ATTACKS MAY BE BROUGHT ON BY MINOR THINGS, SUCH AS: * irritation of the area * heat or cold or * drinking something hot or cold Medicines may be given to relieve the pain. Control of any underlying condition (such as diabetes) will help prevent progression. Drugs to prevent flare-ups may be helpful. When medical measures fail, surgery may be considered to remove the root of the nerve. These include electrosurgery, microsurgery, and radio wave surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions
What Are The Most Common Types of Orofacial Pain?

The most common pain in the mouth is dental pain. The most common pain in the face is muscle pain. Regardless, when an obvious cause is not present, pains are generally classified as, neuropathic pains (related to nerves such as a neuralgia), neurovascular pains (related to blood vessels such as a migraine) and musculoskeletal pains (related to muscle and joints such as TMJ and neck problems). top of page NEUROPATHIC PAINS
What is Neuropathic Pain?

Neuropathic pain refers to pains originating in the central (brain and spinal cord) or peripheral (nerve fibers) nervous system. Most of us are familiar with an injured part sending signals along a healthy nerve to tell us that the part hurts. In neuropathic pain, the problem lies within the nerve telling us that a healthy part hurts. Therefore, it can be very frustrating for a patient experiencing severe terrible pain while everything appears to be healthy. Neuropathic pains are often accompanied by complaints of burning or shocking sensations, and sometimes mechanical complaints, such as intense squeezing or pulling.
