NIGHT TERRORS
A night terror is a sleep disturbance that can be very upsetting to parents. When children have night terrors, they usually scream or cry out and appear to be frightened, as if they're reacting to a nightmare. Children having night terrors may appear very frightened. They may sit up in bed, thrash their arms and legs, and seem terrified. Night terrors are often more upsetting to parents than they are to the children who have them. When parents try to calm their children during night terrors, they often find that their children do not seem to recognize them and do not respond to them. This is because children having night terrors are still asleep. Their eyes may be wide open, but in fact they are asleep. Parents often confuse night terrors with nightmares, when in fact they are very different. Night terrors are less common than nightmares. Unlike nightmares, night terrors take place during very deep sleep and generally occur during the first four hours of sleep. Though they are rare, they most often occur around the ages of four and five, and they usually stop around eight years of age. Night terrors are not usually considered to be dangerous or to be a cause for concern. It is not presently known why children have night terrors, but they do tend to run in families. They are not believed to be related to stresses or problems in everyday life that children may have. They are usually not upsetting to children, because they don't remember the night terror the next day, and do not wake up while they are having them. Most often the children having night terrors return to quiet sleep within a short period of time.

Night Terrors
Frances Sonnabend It seemed odd to be going somewhere without Richard. For all of their 37 years of married life, Phyllis had never gone anywhere alone. Well, to the grocery store, or Christmas shopping, maybe. But never to a social gathering of any kind. "I know, Richard," she murmured. "You wouldn't think it proper for me to go." But she felt obligated to attend the Halloween party, the first social get-together the company had sponsored since she began working there. Left a widow at age 57, she considered herself very lucky to get a job to tide her over until social security kicked in. She was dressed in a long white skirt and full-cut white blouse. On the seat next to her lay the accessories for her White Witch costume a white conical hat with an attached fringe of straw-colored hair, and a witch mask with a white face and smiling red mouth. When she had tried the hat and mask on at home in front of the mirror, she had felt Richard's disapproval and had taken them off at once. She hoped her co-workers wouldn't think she looked ridiculous. She didn't think they would. They were very nice. The white lines of the freeway unreeled, ever beckoning, in the glare of the Oldsmobile's headlights. Lulled by the hum of tires on smooth pavement, Phyllis felt drowsy. She had not slept well lately. Not since Richard had suffered that fatal heart attack on a cold moonless night in January.

Once children can talk, they are able to describe that they are having bad dreams from about the age of two years. This age also coincides with a surge in the frequency of nightmares that may be linked to the great developmental changes that are occurring at this time. Some nightmares are about specific situations like advertisement witches, crocodiles or nasty people. Others may be about being chased, being hurt or falling. But the main feature is that your child wakes up feeling frightened and can remember what happened in his dream. He needs reassurance and a cuddle and will often go back to sleep with no problem. Nightmares are often triggered by something that happened in the day, events in a story or something seen on television.

Also in May, Dr. Steven Hyman, the director of the National Institute of Mental Health issued an alert to family practitioners warning them about the use of antidepressants for children with depression who may have a bipolar disorder. "While it can be hard to determine which young patients will become manic," he wrote, " there is a greater likelihood among children who have a family history of bipolar disorder. Family practitoners should be aware of the signs and symptoms of mania so that they can educate families on how to recognize them immediately."
We consider this great progress and we hope this alert will deter the misdiagnosis and mistreatment of many children.
Certainly a groundswell is developing. The Child and Adolescent Bipolar Foundation continues to welcome over 2,000 visitors a day and now has 15 online support groups. Give yourself a great gift and go over to www.bpkids.org

How to Deal With Night Terrors
    From your Sleep Disorders Guide
Night terrors are not the same as nightmares and the treatment is different as well. Difficulty Level: Average Time Required: Varies Here's How:
  • Don't hug or shake your child. Waking the child will only frighten him or her more.
  • Stay close to your child until he or she falls into a normal sleep again.
  • Turn on the lights and talk softly to soothe and assure the child that he or she is safe.
  • Watch to make sure your child doesn't do anything to harm him or herself, like falling out of bed.
  • Night terrors sometimes lead to sleep walking. If this occurs, guide your child gently back to bed without waking him or her.
  • Keep the room safe in case of sleepwalking. Avoid upper bunks and keep the floor free of dangerous obstructions.

A child who wakes from a nightmare may be frightened, but he or she is rarely very disoriented. Some details of nightmares can be recalled, but night terrors are completely forgotten when the child wakes up. Finally, nightmares occur during the dream stage of sleep during the second half of the night, while night terrors seem to occur during the transition stage between the first, deep sleep of the night and the first period of dream sleep. Sleepwalking and sleeptalking also occur at this transition. WHAT HAPPENS DURING NIGHT TERRORS?

NIGHT TERRORS My brother was two years older than me, and when we were very small, we shared a bedroom. He adored me, his baby sister, holding my hand everywhere we went, and always making the neighborhood bullies let me have my way. When Tim was around seven or eight, he started to have the worst nightmares imaginable. He would get out of bed and throw things around the room and bang his head on the wall screaming bloody murder, eyes wild with rage. If my parents came into the room, he would hit and kick them. By the time his dreams would end, he'd be soaked in sweat and exhausted. I was a light sleeper so I usually would wake up as soon as his fits started, and before they got bad, crawl under the bed (even though I knew monsters lived there. Heck I was five ) My parents were too poor to take him to a psychiatrist so they decided to put away anything breakable, pad the dresser corners and windows, and put me into another room. When the terrors came, they would wait outside the door and pray that he wouldn't hurt himself. With the suggestion of a family friend, they never tried to wake him. I have to admit, his dreams scared the daylights out of me. As we got older, I started to have recurring dreams about Satan. One in particular happened the night my sister went off to college and I finally got a bedroom alone. I was eight. Satan was a normal person in my dream, but had short spiky horns and rotten teeth. I always knew I was dreaming and didn't let my dreams get to me. (If I did, my parents would never let me watch Dark Shadows again. ) Anyway, this night, I dreamed Satan was trying to strangle me. I couldn't breathe and somehow knew I was in a dream. I tried desperately to wake myself up, but I couldn't. As I choked and cried in my dream, I could see my brother in the distance screaming at Satan the way he did during his night terrors. He threw things at Satan and hit him and kicked him, but Satan wouldn't stop. Finally, just as I felt life leaving me, Tim smashed Satan over the head with a baseball bat. Satan departed and I woke up. I laid there for a very long time, not able to go back to sleep.

Follow Ups Post Followup Rest Forum9 FAQ Posted by Ki on October 11, 2002 at 21:25:40: i have had encounters with the shadowmen as well. im an 18 year old female and since childhood i have had them. the situations seem to be related to night terrors.
to this day i still feel that thing everywhere i go. it still watches me, and gives me bad dreams. resently i woke up, paralized with a voice in my head, it sounded real deep, and EVIL. it was telling me things, that i now forgot. it told me secrets about itself i think. the only thing i remember was when it called me it's Evil Minion Servant. i get paralyzed in my sleep all the time, and have learned to over come it - i completely relax my body, do not panic, and relax my mind and focus on thinking, "this is my body, i will regain control". soon enough my arms started quivering and i was able to move my head, while it was still talking to me..i was awake when this happened. then i freaked out and with all my might i shouted, "I have to wake up now!!!" and slowly, i regained control of my body. what does that mean? why do they do this? what do they want? i am a threat? in what way?
thank you...and somebody please help me out here!

night terrors. What are night terrors ? People who have night terrorscan wake up feeling more tired than when they went to bed.
    http://home.vicnet.net.au/~johnf/terrors.htm
    Night terrors
What are "night terrors" ? Generally this is a term used to describe the experience that some people have during their sleep period. Often these experiences are terrifying for the recipient and can lead to a reluctance by some people to go to sleep. These "supposed" dreams often have one, or more, dream characters who are creating (or trying to create) unpleasant situations/pain/distress to the sleeper.
People who have night terrors can wake up feeling more tired than when they went to bed. People who have had these experiences, particularly if they have heard of OOBs may wonder whether these recollections of people attacking them are actual memories of someone doing that. Not just some "imaginary" situation. Such thinking is often correct. The reason many people "think" that people are attacking them during their sleep is because this is often what is happening. The attackers can be people who are alive and OOB, and/or people who are discarnate. The term often used to describe the situation of someone attacking someone on psychic levels is "psychic attack". Protecting oneself from such experiences is called "psychic protection". Our booklet covers both of these topics, and many others. Where night terrors are simply situations of psychic attack then it should be pretty obvious that if someone were to implement effective psychic protection techniques then they could reduce/stop such unpleasant experiences. More on this topic can be found on our

Know what they are and what you can do by Jennifer Melo
Imagine waking to the sounds of screaming or sobbing from your child. You rush to his room only to find him in a trance-like state, still not fully awake. He is sweating, his heart is racing, and he has a terrorized look on his face. "Four-year-olds and older are usually troubled by nightmares rather than night terrors, which are more common for two to three-year-olds," says Adams. However, it has been noted that night terrors can occur at any age. The cause of night terrors is unknown, but they usually occur within the first hour of sleep and can last up to 20 minutes. Parents can differentiate between nightmares and night terrors. "In a nightmare, the child will awake, be frightened, and often call for mommy and daddy," says Adams. But when a child is experiencing a night terror, he is not fully awake, although he may be crying and screaming and his eyes may be open. A child will not remember a night terror as opposed to nightmares. DO: Ensure that the child is in a safe environment. The child may get up and walk although they are not fully awake.

Baby Sleep - Sleep Concerns: Night Terrors

Night terrors are mysterious sleep disturbances that preschoolers and older children are occasionally subject to, always during the deepest part of non-dreaming sleep, usually within one to four hours of falling asleep. During a night terror — which can last anywhere from ten to 40 minutes — your child may bolt out of bed, thrash around and scream, or run wildly through the house. While his eyes may be wide open, he is not awake and will not be aware of your presence. Babycenter.com
