Nystagmus Definition Uncontrollable eye movements are involuntary, rapid, and repetitive movement of the eyes. Alternative names Back and forth eye movements; Horizontal nystagmus; Involuntary oscillation of the eye(s); Nystagmus; Rapid eye movements from side to side; Rotary nystagmus; Side to side movements of the eyes; Uncontrolled eye movements; Vertical nystagmus Considerations Nystagmus refers to rapid involuntary movements of the eyes that may be from side to side (horizontal nystagmus), up and down (vertical nystagmus) or rotary. Depending on the cause, these movements may be in both eyes together or in just one eye. The term "dancing eyes" has been used in regional dialect to describe nystagmus. The abnormal eye movements of nystagmus are caused by abnormalities of function in the areas of the brain that controls eye movements, but the exact nature of these disorders is often poorly understood. Nystagmus may be either congenital (present at birth) or may be caused by disease or injury later in life. Congenital Nystagmus: Congenital nystagmus is the most common. It is usually mild, does not change in severity, and is not associated with any other disorder.

Beeld:
  • bij oogaandoeningen (oculaire nystagmus);

Niinikään sokeilla on toisinaan silmävärvetauti. Nystagmuksen esiintymistiheys väestössä on noin promillen luokkaa.

Representation of Three Dimensional Space in the Vestibular, Oculomotor, and Visual Systems . NY Acad Sci, Vol.545, pp 93-104, 1989.
Abstract:
We have attempted to determine whether these changes were due in part to immediate changes in vestibulo- and sensory-motor function that occurs in weightlessness or whether they were attributable to gradual adaptive changes. The latter possibility arises because the Skylab astronauts were first tested in the M-131 experiment on or after Mission Day 6. Our approach has been to use parabolic flight maneuvers as a way of generating variations in gravitational force level, g (1 g is equivalent to the terrestrial gravitational force level). Repeated alternating periods of free fall, g, and high-force level, approximately 1.8 g peak, of 20-25 sec duration were generated. Experimental observations were collected during these steady state force level periods.

Rhythmic, oscillating motions of the eyes are called nystagmus. The to-and-fro motion is generally involuntary. Vertical nystagmus occurs much less frequently than horizontal nystagmus and is often, but not necessarily, a sign of serious brain damage. Nystagmus can be a normal physiological response or a result of a pathologic problem. Description
The eyes play a critical role in maintaining balance. They are directly connected to other organs of equilibrium, most important of which is the inner ear. Paired structures called the semicircular canals deep in the skull behind the ears sense motion and relay that information to balance control centers in the brain. The eyes send visual information to the same centers. A third set of sensors consists of nerve endings all over the body, particularly in joints, that detect position. All this information is integrated to allow the body to navigate in space and gravity. It is possible to fool this system or to overload it with information so that it malfunctions. A spinning ride at the amusement park is a good way to overload it with information. The system has adapted to the spinning, expects it to go on forever, and carries that momentum for some time after it is over. Nystagmus is the lingering adjustment of the eyes to tracking the world as it revolves around them.

Understanding Nystagmus
by Richard L. Windsor, O.D.
Laura K. Windsor, O.D.
The Low Vision Centers of Indiana Nystagmus is an involuntary rhythmic shaking or wobbling of the eyes. The term nystagmus is derived from the Greek word, "nmstagmos", which was used to describe the wobbly head movements of a sleepy or inebriated individual. Nystagmus has also been described as "dancing eyes" or "jerking eyes". Doctors and researchers classify nystagmus by the characteristics of the eye movements like do they move back and forth like a pendulum or do they move slowly in one direction and then rapidly in another? Do the eyes move laterally or vertically and by how much? How fast do the eyes move? There are various methods of classifying nystagmus. Traditionally nystagmus has been divided into two groups. Sensory nystagmus is related to vision loss and motor nystagmus is related to the control of muscle function. There are over 45 types of nystagmus. To simplify our explanation of nystagmus, we will divide nystagmus into two basic types. The first is nystagmus that begins very early in life and is associated with vision loss. The second is called acquired nystagmus and is associated with neurological disorders occurring later in life.

Periodic downbeat Nystagmus
Article abstract
The authors observed a periodic downbeat nystagmus with a cycle of 3 minutes 30 seconds, beating downward for a period of 90 seconds every 2 minutes. It lasted 86 hours in a patient with severe hypomagnesemia associated with complications from scleroderma. There was no lesion on brain imaging, and an EEG performed during the nystagmus was normal, indicating that the most likely explanation for this periodic nystagmus is metabolic. This form of nystagmus may have resulted from severe hypomagnesemia, possibly associated with thiamine deficiency.

Nystagmus Nystagmus is the involuntary rhythmic movement or "wobbling" of the eyes which usually results in some degree of visual loss. The degree and direction of movement varies from patient to patient, as does the loss or impairment of vision. Spontaneous nystagmus that starts before about six months of age is called congenital or early-onset nystagmus. Although the nystagmus may not actually start until the baby is a few months old, it is usually caused by a visual problem that is present at birth Nystagmus that starts after the age of six months is called acquired nystagmus. It can be caused by a visual or neurological problem. What causes nystagmus?

    http://www.strabismus.nl/en/nys_basics.html
    Some examples of wave forms
How it can affect visual perception
    What is nystagmus
Nystagmus means the eyes make involuntary repetitive, rhythmic oscillations. It is considered to be a fault in the mechanisms that hold the eyes or fixation steady, meaning the neural systems involved in nystagmus include the cerebellovestibular, optokinetic, and pursuit systems (which makes it real a challenge to research).
We have manifest, latent, and manifest-latent nystagmus for you. Manifest means it's there all the time, latent means it's not there unless you occlude one eye, and manifest-latent is an oxymoronic expression meaning it's there all the time but much worse when one eye is occluded.
    Latent and Manifest-Latent Nystagmus
These two occur commonly in essential infantile esotropia, and are something else entirely than manifest congenital nystgamus. Latent nystagmus appears only when one eye is covered, then both eyes develop nystagmus with the slow phase toward the occluded eye and the fast phase in the other direction (you don't see anything during a fast phase. Slow phases give you some time to actually process the images flashing over your foveas).
Anywhere between a 10 and 52% percent incidence of (latent and manifest-latent) nystagmus in those with congenital esotropia syndrome has been reported. Many turn their face such that the preferred eye is turned inward a bit; in that position the nystagmus is absent or much less. Latent nystagmus is a real bother during a standard visual acuity test - that always involves the covering of one eye, and looking straight ahead too. That way, you'll may never get any further than the big E on the Snellen chart, despite the fact that you might very well see 20/20 when viewing binocularly.

The invention relates to a novel identification method to be used for the purposes of extracting components from a signal composed of a greater number of components. The model for one of the components is selected. The variance between the signal and the model is measured to obtain a noise indicator value. The corner geometry value is calculated, and a transition indicator value is generated based on the function of the corner geometry value. The segmentation points are then determined based on the transition indicator, noise indicator and model values in a window over the data stream. The method of the present invention is suitable for use in identifying separate interleaved components of sample signals, such as ocular nystagmus, as used in eye-health situations, or Raman spectra.

In pendular nystagmus the speed of motion of the eyes is the same in both directions. In jerk nystagmus there is a slow and fast phase. The eyes move slowly in one direction and then seem to jerk back in the other direction.
