An ominous statistic is that the percentage of children and adolescents who are obese has doubled in the last 20 years.
The basic nutritional needs of most people are approximately 2,000 calories a day for women, and 2,500 for men. However, a professional athlete or manual laborer may need 4,000 or more. Pregnant women and nursing mothers require about 300-500 more calories/day than women who are neither pregnant nor nursing.

47. Overweight Children -- How To Help Your Child
A practical guide to helping your child to lose weight and combat obesity.

Overweight Children
How to Help Your Child
Introduction
In the United States at least one child in five is overweight and the number of overweight children continues to grow. Over the last 2 decades, this number has increased by more than 50 percent, and the number of "extremely" overweight children has nearly doubled (Arch Pediatr Adolesc Med. 1995: 149: 1085-91). A doctor determines if children are overweight by measuring their height and weight. Although children have fewer weight-related health problems than adults, overweight children are at high risk of becoming overweight adolescents and adults. Overweight adults are at risk for a number of health problems including heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure stroke, and some forms of cancer.
Causes of Overweight Children
Children become overweight for a variety of reasons. The most common causes are genetic factors, lack of physical activity, unhealthy eating patterns, or a combination of these factors. In rare cases, a medical problem, such as an endocrine disorder, may cause a child to become overweight. Your physician can perform a careful physical exam and some blood tests, if necessary, to rule out this type of problem. Children whose parents or brothers or sisters are overweight may be at an increased risk of becoming overweight themselves. Although weight problems run in families, not all children with a family history of obesity will be overweight. Genetic factors play a role in increasing the likelihood that a child will be overweight, but shared family behaviors such as eating and activity habits also influence body weight.

The Complexity of Obesity
by Mary Pat Palmer "Fat is beautiful, along with every other shape, size or form. The oldest depiction of divinity on earth is the Goddess of Willendorf, a large-breasted, large-bellied clay Mother figure 30,000 years old," observes Diane Stein, author of "Natural Remedy". Certainly this is good to recall when fat has become an obsession, such as with anorexia, bulimia, constant dieting and bingeing, when the issue of weight is clearly out of perspective. While fat is a feminist issue, it is also a health issue. Obesity can endanger the internal organs through clogging, making exercise difficult and slowing down the entire system. All of the internal organs can be endangered, particularly the heart. Obesity arises from many general places. Obesity can be hereditary, although there is some question about the behavioral component and the genetic, or it can result from a glandular dis-order. Eating the "wrong foods" can contribute to obesity. Over-eating is another factor, again somewhat complicated because conditions can become habitual in the system, such as the slowing of the metabolism. People do have different metabolic rates, and these play a very strong role in their body type.

Anti-obesity drug to get warning label
August 22, 1996
Web posted at: 11:50 p.m. EDT PHILADELPHIA (CNN) Wyeth-Ayerst Laboratories, maker of Redux, a weight loss drug approved by the FDA in April, announced Thursday it will change the product label to warn of a rare life-threatening cardiopulmonary disorder. Redux is the first appetite suppressant to be made available in the United States in more than 20 years and the only drug prescribed for long-term maintenance of weight loss. Since its introduction in mid-June, more than 486,000 prescriptions have been written, the drug company said. Based on data from the International Primary Pulmonary Hypertension Study, investigators say the risk of developing primary pulmonary hypertension for patients taking the drug is estimated to be between 23 and 46 cases per million patients per year. Current labeling says the risk is 18 cases per million per year for those using the drug longer than three months. There are one or two cases of PPH per million adults per year in the general population. With PPH, the blood pressure in the arteries supplying the lungs is unusually high. The ailment can result in heart failure. The condition usually results from lung diseases such as chronic bronchitis or emphysema.

Heart Association adds obesity to risk factor list
Impotence also linked to heart disease
June 1, 1998
Web posted at: 6:30 p.m. EDT (2230 GMT) (CNN) Obesity has long been considered a major health risk, and on Monday the American Heart Association agreed, adding it to its list of major risk factors for heart disease and heart attack. "Obesity itself has become a lifelong disease, not a cosmetic issue nor a moral judgment, and it is becoming a dangerous epidemic," said Dr. Robert H. Eckel , vice chairman of the AHA's Nutrition Committee. Obesity joins other major risk factors on the list, including smoking, high blood cholesterol, high blood pressure and a sedentary lifestyle. Obesity was previously listed as a contributing risk factor. The link between obesity and heart disease isn't news to doctors, who have known for years that those who are overweight have increased health risks.

First Federal Obesity Clinical Guidelines Released
The first Federal guidelines on the identification, evaluation, and treatment of overweight and obesity in adults were released today by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), in cooperation with the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK). These clinical practice guidelines are designed to help physicians in their care of overweight and obesity, a growing public health problem that affects 97 million American adults 55 percent of the population. These individuals are at increased risk of illness from hypertension, lipid disorders, type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke, gallbladder disease, osteoarthritis, sleep apnea and respiratory problems, and certain cancers. The total costs attributable to obesity-related disease approaches $100 billion annually. "Overweight and obesity pose a major public health challenge. The development of these guidelines was a pioneering achievement since they were the first ever developed by the Institute using an evidence-based model and methodology," said NHLBI Director Dr. Claude Lenfant. "This report will be an invaluable clinical tool for any health care professional who works with overweight or obese patients," he added.
