I experienced my first ocular migraine last week, having suffered from regular migraines for the last 10 years. Even though the pain is not anywhere near as bad with the ocular variety, I was really terrified that I was losing my sight, as the visual disturbance was progressing, which is quite different to the visuals that I get with a regular migraine.
I have been unable to identify any food triggers, and even though I have eliminated caffiene and alcohol from my diet, I still experience these symptoms. The only thing that I can identify as a causal factor is stress - does any-one else experience this or have any ideas about how to help Replies to this message:

Migraine and Vertigo
Migraine is a disorder usually associated with headache. Although it can affect the whole head, it usually occurs on one side only. It is characterized by throbbing and associated with symptoms that may include nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound. Flashes or patterns before the eyes may precede the headache. Symptoms may also include vertigo and imbalance. Migraine can be associated with benign recurrent vertigo of adults (not to be confused with BPPV), paroxysmal vertigo of childhood, motion sickness, and other vestibular disturbances. Stress, anxiety, hypoglycemia, fluctuating estrogen, certain foods, smoking and other factors can trigger migraine. Physicians treat vertigo and imbalance from migraine by reducing these risk factors. Treatment may also involve medications.
Statistics
Migraine is an extremely common disorder. Studies suggest that more than 20 million people in the U.S. suffer from migraine. Women are four times as likely as men to experience migraine, which can recur at intervals ranging from one day to several years. Studies indicate that about 25 percent of migraine sufferers experience dizziness during the attacks.
Migraine classifications
Migraine disorders are usually divided into several types including common, classic, migraine equivalent, and complicated migraine. However, the International Headache Society (IHS) recently developed a new classification system.

etinal migraine is repeated attacks of monocular scotoma or blindness lasting less than one hour and associated with headache. Additional terms include: ocular migraine, anterior visual pathway migraine, and opthalmic migraine. This condition may be broadly defined as a transient or permanent monocular visual disturbance accompanying a migraine attack or occurring in an individual with a strong history of migrainous episodes.
Retinal migraine occurs more frequently than opthalmoplegic migraine. We estimate the frequency of strictly monocular visual phenomena occurring in conjunction with migraine to be 1 of 200 migraine sufferers.
The exact genetic predisposition to this subtype of migraine headache is unknown. The familial occurrence is similar to that expected in all patients with migraine preceded by visual aura, with an estimated 25% positive familial history. Retinal migraine is expected to be more common in women than men, which is true of migraine headaches in general. The IHS Diagnostic Criteria For Retinal Migraine:
1. Fully reversible monocular scotoma or blindness lasting less than 60 minutes and confirmed by examination during attack or by patient's drawing of monocular field defect during an attack.

MIGRAINE
I've been wanting to write a piece on headache and especially migraine for some time but assembling useful information on this topic without getting overly technical has been difficult. Most of the following was borrowed from three different sources but offers a concise, and I think, accurate description of the dreaded migraine.
There are many types and causes of headaches. A migraine is a type of vascular (related to the blood vessels) headache and it is among the most severe. It is also common, affecting about 1 person in 10. It affects women more than men and often runs in families. Migraines usually appear before the age of 40, frequently at a time when hormonal body changes occur (such as during adolescence).
A classic migraine is often preceded by strange visual symptoms, such as flashing lights, zigzag lines, or even temporary loss of vision. The source of these visual problems is rarely, if ever, related to the eyes themselves, but to the blood vessels inside the head. The term "ocular migraine" refers to a type in which the affected blood vessels are those providing circulation to one eye. It sometimes causes a temporary loss of vision in that eye.
The exact cause of migraine is not known, though research has found a possible link to abnormal levels of certain chemicals in the brain. An attack begins with narrowing (spasm) of the blood vessels inside the head followed by their dilation (enlarging) and stretching, which is probably what creates the pain.

MYSTERY SYMPTOMS
Last modified May 1, 2002 In 1986, I was chosen to participate in a program for gifted and talented youth at the Texas School for the Blind. At first, I balked, remembering my previous experience there. But perhaps things had changed. In any case, I was older now and more able to speak up for myself. Besides, I could take a cooking class. I learned my way around campus easily using my cane as well as visual landmarks. I traveled from "my house," which I shared with four other girls, to the classroom building, the dining hall, the recreation center, and dormitories where friends were staying. But one afternoon, I encountered a problem while traveling. I froze. If I had become lost, I would have been able to think and retrace my steps. But I could not retrace my stepsand I wasn't lost. I knew exactly where I was. I was approaching the bridge under the trees, on my way to the dorms to see friends. But I couldn't see the trees. I couldn't see the bridge. I couldn't see the grass on either side of me. The sun was beating down on me, but I couldn't see it either. I couldn't see anything. I turned around and headed back to my house, trailing the grass to locate the first two houses and then mine. I was frightened.

What are migraines?
Migraines are characterized by recurrent attacks of throbbing headache lasting four to seventy-two hours, typically starting on one side of the head, which become worse with exertion and maybe associated with nausea, vomiting and loss of appetite and increased sensitivity to light, sound or smell. Migraines may vary widely in intensity, duration and frequency of recurrence. Migraine sufferers may additionally experience a premonition that migraine events are about to occur. This takes the form of an aura that precedes the headache by no more than sixty minutes consisting of visual changes, or less commonly, reversible mood disturbances, tactile sensory deficits or weakness. What different types of migraines are there?
Common migraines are headaches accompanied by symptoms such as nausea, without visual or other neurologic changes. The pain may feel as though it radiates from a specific point, sometimes behind the eye, for which reason it can be confused with eye pain.
Classic migraines share all of the characteristics of common migraine with the additional defining feature of neurologic changes preceding or accompanying the headache, including visual changes and sensory or motor disturbances such as tingling in the arm or muscle weakness.
