A clear, slightly yellowish liquid that surrounds the unborn baby (fetus) during pregnancy ; it is contained in the amniotic sac.
Discussion:
The fetus floats in the amniotic fluid. During pregnancy the amniotic fluid increases in volume as the fetus grows. Approximately 1000 ml of amniotic fluid surround the baby at full term (40 weeks gestation ). This fluid is circulated by the baby every 3 hours. It accomplishes numerous functions for the fetus, including:
  • protects from outside injury by cushioning sudden blows or movements allows for freedom of fetal movement and permits musculoskeletal development maintains a relatively constant temperature for the environment surrounding the fetus protects the fetus from heat loss is a source of oral fluid to the fetus allows for symmetrical growth and development of the fetus
An excessive amount of amniotic fluid is called polyhydramnios . This condition often accompanies multiple pregnancy (twins or triplets), or some congenital defect such as

OLIGOHYDRAMNIOS/ANHYDRAMNIOS
Oligohydramnios means reduced amniotic fluid and anhydramnios means absence of amniotic fluid.
Prevalence
Oligohydramnios in the second trimester is found in about 1 per 500 pregnancies.
Etiology
Oligohydramnios in the second trimester is usually the result of preterm premature rupture of the membranes, uteroplacental insufficiency and urinary tract malformations (bilateral renal agenesis, multicystic or polycystic kidneys, or urethral obstruction).

problems. Too little amniotic fluid is called oligohydramnios, and too much fluid is called hydramnios or polyhydramnios. .
http://www.lebanonhealth.com/condi/92528.htm
Amniotic Fluid Disorders Normally, the fetus floats surrounded by amniotic fluid in the uterus. This fluid creates a protective environment, keeping a constant temperature and safeguarding the fetus from injury. Amniotic fluid increases in volume until about the 34th week of pregnancy, then slightly decreases until the due date. Having either too much or too little fluid can create problems. Too little amniotic fluid is called "oligohydramnios," and too much fluid is called "hydramnios" or "polyhydramnios." Polyhydramnios increases the risk of preterm labor , breech birth or other abnormal fetal presentations (see Childbirth Complications ), placenta problems and post-delivery bleeding (see Postpartum Problems Amniotic fluid volume is especially important before 22 to 23 weeks, when the fetal lungs are developing. If there isn't enough fluid, the lungs can't develop properly. Other complications of prolonged oligohydramnios are abnormalities of the face, body, legs and arms. If there's too little amniotic fluid for the baby to float or to be sufficiently cushioned, it may put pressure on the umbilical cord, thereby cutting off some of its oxygen and nutrient supply. This puts the fetus at risk for poor fetal growth or stillbirth . Decreased amniotic fluid later in pregnancy can lead to compression of the umbilical cord and detachment of the placenta (abruptio placentae).

Amniotic fluid
Definition: This fluid is a clear, slightly yellowish liquid that surrounds the unborn baby (fetus) during pregnancy it is contained in the amniotic sac.
Alternative Names: Oligohydramnios
Information: The fetus floats in the amniotic fluid. During pregnancy the amniotic fluid increases in volume as the fetus grows. Amniotic fluid volume is greatest at approximately 34 weeks of gestation, when it averages 800 ml. Approximately 600 ml of amniotic fluid surrounds the baby at full term (40 weeks gestation ). This fluid is constantly circulated by the baby swallowing and "inhaling" existing fluid and replacing it through "exhalation" and urination. Amniotic fluid accomplishes numerous functions for the fetus, including:
  • Protects from outside injury by cushioning sudden blows or movements Allows for freedom of fetal movement and permits symmetrical musculoskeletal development Maintains a relatively constant temperature for the environment surrounding the fetus, thus protecting the fetus from heat loss Permits proper lung development
An excessive amount of amniotic fluid is called polyhydramnios . This condition may accompany multiple pregnancy (twins or triplets), congenital anomalies, or gestational diabetes.

BILATERAL RENAL AGENESIS Bilateral Renal Agenesis is the absence of both kidneys at birth. It is a genetic disorder characterized by a failure of the kidneys to develop in a fetus. This absence of kidneys causes a deficiency of amniotic fluid (Oligohydramnios) in a pregnant woman. Normally, the amniotic fluid acts as a cushion for the developing fetus. When there is an insufficient amount of this fluid, compression of the fetus may occur resulting in further malformations of the baby. This disorder is more common in infants born of a parent who has a kidney malformation, particularly the absence of one kidney (unilateral renal agenesis). Studies have proven that unilateral renal agenesis and bilateral renal agenesis are genetically related.

Surgery may not be indicated in all cases. Stage I There is a small amount of amniotic fluid in the donar twins sac (known as oligohydramnios) and a large amount of amniotic fluid (polyhydramnios) in the recipient's sac. At this stage, surgery may not be indicated but close observation for a change in condition is recommended. Stage II Along with poly / oligohydramnios, there is no visible bladder in the donor. At this stage, laser surgery is recommended.
